Holy Humour: How to stay safe in the world today(Thanks to Mary Dougall for this submission)

    1. Avoid riding in automobiles. They are responsible for 20% of all fatal accidents.

    2. Do not stay home. 17% of all accidents occur in the home.

    3. Avoid walking on streets or sidewalks. 14% of all accidents occur to pedestrians.

    4. Avoid traveling by air, rail or water. 16% of all accidents involve these forms oftransportation.

    5. Of the remaining 33%, 32% of all deaths occur in Hospitals. So above all else, avoid

    hospitals.

    But..

You will be pleased to learn that only .001% of all deaths occur in worship services in

church, and these are usually related to previous physical disorders. Therefore, logic tells

us that the safest place for you to be at any given point in time is at CHURCH!

AND Bible Study is safe too! The percentage of deaths during Bible

    Study is even less!

ANNOUNCEMENTFrom our Clerk of Session, Margaret Lupton

I am sure most of you have heard that after many months of service at Knox Rev. Congramhas resigned as our Interim Moderator. Members of Session were surprised and saddened withthis announcement but understand his desire to be relieved of this extra workload. He has givenus leadership not only in provision of weekly services but has also spent much time working with

our Search committee as they proceed through the process necessary to find a full time ministerfor Knox. He is going to be taking some new training, which could lead to an entirely differentcareer for him and we wish him well as he embarks on what will surely be a most exciting venture.

Rev. Gwen Ament, Minister at St. Marys Presbyterian Church has been appointed as ournew Interim Moderator. We are looking forward to meeting with her and working together planningfor our future as a congregation. Also I have been told it is very likely that we will be learning moreabout her congregation and will be sharing events with them as we get to know this very strongand committed group of Presbyteriansjust down the road.

The Alley has had a successful start to the New Year. Usually January and February are ourslowest months but in 2012 we have continued to average eight to nine hundred dollars each

    week.

With the mild winter our winter clothing sales were down so we started our winter clothing

clearance Bag Sale early and it has been quite successful in moving clothes out the door. The

bag sale is continuing and we have a half price boot and shoe sale. Our customers enjoy the

bargains and we benefit by having fewer winter clothes left at the end of the season. In

March we will be thinking spring and will get new clothes on the racks.

From time to time we have an over abundance of some clothing. We like to donate these to

places where they are needed. Last week we were able to take a large donation of ladies pants

to Emily Murphy Centre. They are always grateful for the help we provide them. We havealso taken a van load to Evangel Hall.

We have been busy trying to get our storeroom more organized and using the space more

    effectively.

The Alley continues to be a wonderful mission for Knox.

You will find a book trolley with booksfrom the church library in the

Narthex. We are hoping that bymaking the books more accessiblethat more people will borrow them.

Take a few minutes before or after the service to look for some good reading!

    If You Want To Change

    The World

    Start With Her!

In 2006, Linda Willis and Rev. Carol Hamilton, with support of our congregation, set off on an HIV/AIDSStudy Visit with the Presbyterian World Service and Development Agency. Their travels would take them to

projects in Northern Malawi where they would see, first-hand, the devastating effects of this disease and

what was being done to alleviate suffering and prevent further spread of the virus. What they were notprepared for were the conditions of absolute poverty and gender inequality they would encounter.

When Linda and Carol returned to Stratford, they began researching, dialoguing with experts in InternationalDevelopment and praying about what could be done to address the needs they observed. They had made

connections with several community leaders and soon e-mails began crossing from one continent to another

as they sought to discover what they could do to make a difference in this area of the world.

Four and a half years later, Change Her World was officially granted charity status as a not-for-profit

Federal Corporation, its office being located here in Stratford. All of our research indicates that the best

method for combating poverty in the developing world is to educate the girls, Linda Willis, co-founder and

Chair explains, and it is for this reason that Change Her World was established.

Willis continues by asking, If a girl is hungry, lacks clothing or is sick, how well will she be able to learn?

For this reason, Change Her Worlds mandate includes relief of poverty, water and sanitation, microloans

and health care in addition to paying school fees for girls and improving existing school structures.

Our first two projects are in Ekwendeni and Chilumba in Northern Malawi, states co-founder and

Director Carol Hamilton, but Change Her World is also supporting projects in Uganda and Haiti. We arevery excited to see this work already providing school fees for 103 Malawian girls to be in school. There is

so much more that needs to be done.

In August 2011, Willis and Hamilton returned to Malawi to visit their projects and took with them 3000 pairs

of underwear for girls and women as this had been identified as a priority need in both communities. Theymet with community leaders and visited the homes of some of the girls that would be assisted with school

    fees and uniforms.

Please bring more underwear, was the request form community leaders, but we need bras for the teens

and young women also. As a result, the collection of new 100 % Cotton underwear and new bras in any

size, style and colour is an ongoing campaign for this charity as well as collecting donations to pay schoolfees and provide improvements to existing school buildings and pit latrines.

On March 11, 2012, we will have Rev. Carol and Linda with us to share more about their journey and

the work of Change Her World. This is a service not to be missed!

As well, the Annual Fundraising Dinner on April 14, 2012 at the Stratford Golf and Country Club

will offer an opportunity to hear about their exciting plans for the upcoming year as they prepare to

return to Malawi in the Spring of 2013. For more information about Change Her World, go to

God's cake.... This is about the best thing I'veever read as an explanation.Sometimes we wonder, 'What did I do to

deserve this?' or 'Why did God have to do this to

    me?'

Here is a wonderful explanation! A daughter istelling her Mother how everything is going

wrong, she's failing algebra, her boyfriend broke

up with her and her best friend is moving away.Meanwhile, her Mother is baking a cake and asks

her daughter if she would like a snack, and thedaughter says, 'Absolutely Mom, I love your cake. ''Here, have some cooking

oil,' her Mother offers. 'Yuck' says her daughter. 'How about a couple raweggs?' 'Gross, Mom!' 'Would you like some flour then? Or maybe baking soda?'

'Mom, those are all yucky!'To which the mother replies: 'Yes, all those thingsseem bad all by themselves. But when they are put together in the right way,

they make a wonderfully delicious cake! God works the same way. Many timeswe wonder why He would let us go through such bad and difficult times. ButGod knows that when He puts these things all in His order, they always workfor good! We just have to trust Him and, eventually, they will all make

something wonderful! God is crazy about you. He sends you flowers everyspring and a sunrise every morning. Whenever you want to talk, He'll listen. He

can live anywhere in the universe, and He chose your heart.

Life may not be the party we hoped for,

but while we are here we might as well dance!

    THE HISTORY CORNER

In a past issue, I spoke of our congregation having three sets of Ministerial chairs andwrote about the first set from the Norman Street Church. In this issue, I would like toacquaint you with our second set of Ministerial chairs.

When the twenty-five families left St. Andrews to form the Free Presbyterian Church theirfirst building was small. Over the years, the congregation grew to 120 families andoutgrew their small building. Plans were made to build a larger and more ornate buildingand in January of 1873 the original Knox Church was opened: a stately gothic buildingresplendent with pews cushioned in crimson and Ministerial Chairs similarly covered. Afterthe great fire of 1913, only the pulpit, chairs and some pews were salvaged.

These three chairs reflect a change in style from the first set. The high pointed backs anddark wood were replaced by a lower, wider chair in a much lighter wood. Their look wasalso more ornate in keeping with the dcor of the sanctuary. After nearly a hundred yearsof wear, the chairs and pulpit were refurbished by the Needlepoint Guild in the 1990s and

now the chairs grace our Memorial Chapel.

The theme for all three chairs is The Trinity. All chair seats carry the same design of theAlpha and Omega and crown with the cross on either side. The middle arm chair depictsangels representing God the Father and was stitched by Hazel Skalitzsky. One side chairis in the motif of Agnes Dei (Lamb of God) and was stitched by Mary Scott. The secondside chair has the design of the descending dove to represent the Holy Spirit and wasstitched by Eleanor Waldie. The three refurbished chairs were rededicated in memory ofMary (Miller) Murray and Robert Ian Murray by their children, Ian Murray and Dr. Frances(Murray) Gizis.

Today, the pulpit sits in front of the

Communion Table and holds the traditionalopen Bible. The needlepoint insert depictsthe Cross Crosslet of the Epiphany in thecentre with the Lamp of Knowledge and theopen Bible on either side. These symbolsrepresent the spreading of the Gospel withthe opening of the Bible to all people not justClergy and scholars. This insert was stitchedby me and rededicated to my Grandmother,Jessie Chesney, who faithfully read her Bibledaily.

I can remember back to the 1940s when these chairs and pulpit were in the SeniorSunday School room (now called the Amphitheatre) and were used for the opening ofSunday School each week. As a child, I thought of our room as our own little church aspews (likely saved from the fire) surrounded the platform and were in the gallery as well. Each Sunday, our Superintendent, Mr. MacGregor, would open with prayer, scripture andhymns before we retired to our individual classrooms for study.

How fortunate we are to still have these treasures from the past as part of our present!Submitted by Kaye Diehl
