S p i r i t u a l P r e p a r a t i o n f o r C h r i s t m a s f r o m P o p e F r a n c i s A few years ago, Pope Francis gave this list of ‘resolutions’ to the Vatican Staff for their spiritual preparation for Christmas. I would like to offer them for us as a parish family for our own reflection. This can be used as an “examination of conscience” for our par-ish Penance Service on Monday, December 16 at 7pm (10 priests will be availa-ble). May the Lord bless us in this Third Week of Advent as we ready the way of the Lord!

Take care of your spiritual life, your relationship with God, because this is the backbone of eve-rything we do and everything we are.

Take care of your family, giving your children and loved ones not just money, but most of all your time, attention, and love.

Take care of your relationships with others, transforming your faith into life and your words into good works, especially on behalf of the needy.

Be careful how you speak, purify your tongue of offensive words, vulgarity and worldly deca-dence.

Heal the wounds of the heart with the oil of forgiveness, forgiving those who have hurt us and medicating the wounds we have caused others.

Look after your work, doing it with enthusiasm, humility, competence, passion, and with a spir-it that knows how to thank the Lord.

Be careful of envy, lust, hatred and negative feelings that devour our interior peace and trans-form us into destroyed and destructive people.

Watch out for anger that can lead to vengeance; for laziness that leads to existential euthana-sia; for pointing the finger at others, which leads to pride; and for complaining continually, which leads to desperation.

Take care of brothers and sisters who are weaker….the elderly, the sick, the hungry, the home-less and strangers, because we will be judged on this.

Make sure your Christmas is about Jesus and not about shopping.

As a new liturgical year begins this Advent, are you ready for a deepening of your relationship with God? What new things does God desire for you in this new season? A new liturgical year comes with a change in the readings we hear proclaimed every Sunday. This Advent, we begin a year focused on encountering Jesus through the apostolic testimony contained in the Gospel of Matthew. All are invited to come and learn more about this Gospel and how to understand the unique voice St. Matthew brings to our under-standing of Jesus as a Jewish man, a Rabbi who re-vealed Himself to be a rebellious Messiah: Emmanu-el, God with us.

T h e G i v i n g T r e e We invite you to join us this Christmas in reaching out to those in need. The Giving Tree, sponsored by St. Vincent de Paul is decorated with gift suggestions in the church. These donations help several organizations: Mary’s Path in Tustin shelters, empowers and equips unwed teen mothers and their babies for lives of hope, dignity and self-sufficiency. Beyond, run by the Sisters of St. Joseph in Orange, joins Mercy House by helping homeless women in transi-tion with temporary housing, training and support to find jobs. Hope for Kids helps find and support host families for children whose families are in crisis and who need transitional help. They also assist disadvantaged youth by raising funds for college scholarships. The School Sisters of St. Francis serve the needy in poor parishes in Southern Texas near the Mexican bor-der in a number of capacities as they help the poor, the disadvantaged, and the abused. The St. Timothy Conference of St. Vincent de Paul assists local families in need with gift cards for gas, grocery stores, Target, Walmart, and fast-foods. St. Timothy Food Pantry helps 80 to 90 families a week with food and basic items such as diapers and toilet paper, and soap. Our needs are for Costco or Smart and Final gift cards that help to supply some of the needs not covered by donations such as baby diapers, baggies for food items such as produce, and for rice and beans. The San Felipe Homeless are the homeless men and women in the Capistrano Beach, San Juan Capistrano and Dana Point areas . Many are day laborers who do not have the means to rent rooms. Once a year, through the Giving Tree, St. Timothy partners with Welcome INN (Interfaith Needs Network) to provide these brothers and sisters with the gifts of sweatshirts, jeans and a bountiful meal in January on the Feast of the Three Kings. To participate, just visit the Giving Tree in the back of the church, take an ornament, and return the orna-ment with the designated gift card to the box by the tree or at the parish office.

Patience is another one of those things many of us struggle with. We want things to go according to our plan and our schedule. Any change brings anxiety and fear. Through daily prayer we better align ourselves with God’s will and His plan, which is far better than anything we can come up with on our own.
