Recently, a letter to parents and guardians from our Superintendent, Dr. Yule, outlin-

ing reporting methods that will be used in our District for the 2017-2018 school year

was sent home. Last year the Ministry of Education encouraged schools to explore

new approaches to communicate student progress. At Edgehill this year teachers will

continue to ensure that parents are well in-formed about their child's progress

throughout the year. Our upcoming Parent-Teacher Conferences (Wed, Nov 1st) are

a good time to discuss the reporting process with your child's teacher. Please do not

hesitate to contact Mrs. Gaudreau or your child's teacher if you have questions.

In an effort to make the shift from “reporting” to “continuous communication” of stu-

dent learning, many teachers are using e-portfolios as a means of communication and

reporting student progress . It demonstrates assessment by providing evidence of ef-

fort and accomplishments in relation to specific learning standards. Using e-portfolios

allows students to reflect, evaluate and set future learning goals by thoughtfully select-

ing samples from different areas to be included in their portfolio.

In summary, e-portfolio assessment will still communicate what students are learning,

where they need to go and how we can work together to make it hap-

pen. Assessment will be continuous throughout the year including two conferences

and viewings of the portfolios at any time . Adjustments may be made over the course

of the year to make communications more meaningful.

Some of our other teachers will be offering a “traditional” report card similar to those

that have been sent home in the past. While the report card may look different, the

intent is to provide clear communication about student progress to parents and guardi-

ans. This year, all of our student reporting will be delivered through an electronic for-

mat. Your child’s teacher will provide more detailed information about how to access

your child’s report. As always, if you have any questions about your child’s reporting

or progress , please ask the teacher at the upcoming parent teacher conferences.

We would like to thank you in advance for your efforts in attending your child’s upcoming parent teacher con-

ference on Wednesday, November 1st. While the meetings are not long in duration, much valuable information

regarding your child`s classroom progress is shared. Good communication between home and school is essential

in helping to ensure student success. We encourage parents to be in regular contact with their

children`s teacher through email and the school agenda.

If you did not have an opportunity to meet with the teacher on conference day, please be

sure to get in touch to reschedule.

Parents as Literacy Supporters (PALS) is a family literacy program that gives parents and caregivers strategies

to encourage learning in their preschool and kindergarten-aged children. Within PALS, children learn to develop

language and literacy abilities that will help them adapt to their community and gain skills that prepare them for

school. Adults learn to support their children’s learning and literacy. Families are welcomed into their neighbour-

hood schools and build relationships with teachers, administrators and other school personnel.

PALS helps family members or caregivers support their kindergarten aged children's early literacy and numeracy

development. PALS offers two sessions for parents each school year .

Each session provides time for parents, teachers and a facilitator to talk together about kindergarten children's

learning at this early stage in their development.

There is also an opportunity for parents to join in activities with their children and to take home a bag of materials

for children to continue their learning at home.

Our first PALS session is on November 2nd in the

Kindergarten room from 9am—10am

Each Monday morning we have two Kings players coming in to read with some of primary classes. The purpose of the Read Program is for the Powell River Kings and Westview Agencies, in collaboration with the School District, to promote the importance of literacy.

Special thanks to our Kings volunteers, Callum and Mitch for donating their time to us weekly at Edgehill!

Every week a Reading Hero is announced. The Reading Hero will win two tickets to a Powell River Kings game and their name will be entered into a monthly draw for a great prize for their whole class and the chance to be 7th Player of the Game.

Our Reading Hero’s to date are:

Nikki Specht Grade 7

Angel Cunningham Grade 6

Dressing for the Weather As the weather changes, (seems like we have had nothing

but rain lately), please remind your children to dress appro-

priately for the weather conditions.

We try to have the children go outside at recess and lunch

as much as possible to ensure they get some fresh air and

physical activity. However, if the weather is dreadful and the

wind is too strong, we keep the children indoors for the

breaks. It is not a bad idea to keep a change of clothes in

your child’s backpack or classroom (particularly a spare pair

of socks and shoes).

A very special thank you to the many volunteers who

helped make the Book Fair happen this Fall! An extra

special thank you to Colleen Bomprezzi who spent

endless hours organizing and planning the Book Fair.

We always raise a great deal of money, ($2300.00)

which helps put books in our classrooms and our library.

We couldn’t have done it without all of our incredible

volunteers! Congratulations to Mackenzie Manzer the

draw winner , who won $25 worth of

books for herself and $25 for her class.

We would like to congratulate all of our runners who represented Edgehill Elementary at the recent

cross country run. In an effort to offer more opportunities for cross school activities, the District

Sports Committee has changed the format of the Cross Country Run. The first run was hosted by

Henderson Elementary and was held during school hours. We had almost 50 students come out to

represent Edgehill.

Thanks again to all of the students who did such an exceptional job representing our school with their

superb running skills and excellent sportsmanship.! The second run was held at Kelly Creek Commu-

nity School on Oct 24th. The sun graced us with its presence for a beautiful fall run.

Special thanks to Mr. Aasen and Mr. Mc Master for their support and assistance in helping out with

practices and at the runs! The next cross country run will be held in the

Spring and will be hosted by Westview School .

Terry Fox Challenge

Our donation goal was set at $1000.00 for the Terry Fox Foundation. Every year, Mr. Aasen, Mr.

Ball and Mr. McMaster mastermind some sort of activity they will perform if we surpass our original

goal. Since we surpassed our goal and raised just over $1000.00, the children were very shocked and

surprised to see the teacher’s silly antics unfold as these eclectic gentlemen donned their finest attire.

Any guesses who the 4th teacher is ? The assembly was a humorous affair, with lots of playful joking!

All of our students who are riding SD#47 buses to and/or from school are required to have their

bus pass with them each and every day. Students who do not have their school district issued

bus pass may be denied ridership. If your child has lost their bus pass they must order and

purchase a new one. Information about that process can be found here:

http://www.sd47.bc.ca/about/pages/buspass.aspx

Please contact Mrs. Gaudreau if you have questions

FIELD TRIPS

This is a reminder to parents/guardians that throughout the year are fortunate to be able to offer our

students many unique learning experiences that happen in school and also away from our building. Some

teachers may take advantage of our proximity to the ocean and the wonderful trail network by walking their

classes to theses areas. Students will also have the opportunity to be bussed to certain venues for learning

opportunities throughout the year. Teachers will generally inform parents through their own means of

communication (agendas or group email) but these curricular field trips within our school day will not re-

quire separate permission forms. Please contact your child’s teacher or Ms. Gaudreau
