CORRECTION ~ STOP YOUR NEEDLES!

This exquisite sampler kit from The Essamplaire, “Victorine Delacroix,” was erroneously kitted with 35c linen, and it should be 40c. The correct linen is on its way to us now. If you have purchased this kit from us, please contact us and we will send you the correct linen. If you haven’t begun stitching on yours and it’s possible for you to do so, the designer would appreciate it if we would return the 35c pieces. If you would ship them to us, we will get them to her.

If you haven’t added this beautiful sampler to your to-do basket and would like to, it is $189 with the silks.

OCTOBER 3: CLASS ON BUTTON/CROCHETED TRIM

Here’s the back of Linda’s pincushion. We knew those of you away would be interested in her very clever use of linen and “marking” her piece.

September’s Sampler of the Month: Carriage House Samplings’ “Garden Glade.” Order it now (by June 30) if you want the chart at 15% discount. More details about this lady in her garden in a future issue, for which the obvious design inspiration came f rom Sarah Car t e r ’s gorgeous canvaswork piece in the collection of the Folk Art Museum in New York.

To see this inspiring canvaswork piece click h e r e : h t t p : / /www.folkartmuseum.org / ?

Thank you, Linda, for providing such fabulous inspiration to so many of us! Who knew?! Class registration may require us finding a spot outside of the shop to hold this class. Debra had a great suggestion, and we’ll have to check temperature averages to see how the weather might be on October 3: Set up tables in our “breezeway” just to the east of the shop. A nice thing about the Southwest desert climate is you almost never have to worry about rain spoiling your outdoor plans . . . only the intense sun! A few other points of interest about Linda’s fabulous finish ~ and her clever use of ALL of the linen to give it a primitive look. She stitched her pincushion on 36c linen, some scrap she had ~ and when she was running out of fabric for the back, she pieced it! I would have bought another piece of linen and not been happy because it didn’t match. For the trim, please understand that there is a purchased lace trim (which will be provided as part of “class kit”) around which you do a row of single crochet with the buttons! Teaching fee + supplies/kit prices in a future newsletter.

FROM A NEW DESIGNER TO US ~ LILA’S STUDIO

Some wonderful designs reminiscent of Fraktur folk art. So what is that? According to Wikipedia, “Fraktur is both a style of lettering and a highly artistic and elaborate illuminated folk art created by the Pennsylvania Dutch (also known as Pennsylvania Deitsch or Pennsylvanian German). Most Fraktur were created between 1740 and 1860.“Fraktur drawings were executed in ink and/or watercolors and are found in a wide variety of forms: writing samples, birth and baptismal certificates, marriage and house blessings, book plates, and floral and figurative scenes. The earlier Fraktur were executed entirely by hand, while printed text became increasingly common in later examples. Common artistic motifs in Fraktur include birds, hearts, and tulips, as well as blackletter and italic calligraphy.“Today, many major American museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Philadelphia Museum of Art have Fraktur in their collection. Important Fraktur have been sold by major American auction houses and antique dealers for prices in excess of $100,000. The definitive text on Fraktur is widely considered to be The Fraktur-Writings or Illuminated Manuscripts of the Pennsylvania Germans, written by Dr. Donald A. Shelley and published by the Pennsylvania German Society in 1961. In late 2004, part of Dr. Shelley's Fraktur collection was sold at public auction in Pennsylvania for $897,833.”I first learned about Fraktur, I believe, from Vickie LoPiccolo Jennett, who hails from Pennsylvania and whose father has an extensive collection of this fabulous folk art.

Clockwise from upper left, “Tulips,” “Bird,” and “Give Joy,” each $8, or buy all 3 in a chart titled “Redware Pottery Inspired” ($12) ~ “Fraktur Bird” ($8) ~ “Fraktur Bird II” ($8) ~ “Destiny” ($10) ~ and “Bless This House” ($10)
