Jun 4ViSakha bucha Day

Over 90% of the Thai population are practicing Buddhists, which makes the annual religious festivals some of the most important events in the calendar. One of the most anticipated is Visakha Bucha (or Vesakha Puja) day, which is held on the day of the full moon during the 6th lunar month and commemorates the birth, enlightenment and death of Lord Buddha. On this day, and during the preceding week in certain areas, there will be festivities held at Buddhist temples across the country. The main day on June 4 sees Buddhists walk around the temple ordination hall (wien tien in Thai) while praying and holding a lighted candle as a sign of respect. As this year marks the 2,600th anniversary of Lord BuddhaÕ s enlightenment, expect even greater displays of fervor. More information at TaT, call center 1672, www.tourismthailand.org.

Jun 10Laguna PhukeT MaraThonFor those who really want to test their athleticism, The Laguna Phuket International Marathon returns this month. First started in 2006, the marathon has been attracting more

Exotic Rassoul Treatment with Well-Being Massage

The detail: 135 minutes, B5,900

The place: Perched on the 15th floor of the luxurious St. Regis Hotel, the Elemis Spa Bangkok is the British spa brandÕ s first property in Southeast Asia. With a classic ivory color scheme running throughout, the spa features a collection of 14 treatment rooms and suites that offer striking views over downtown Bangkok. Signature spa facilities include

the Arabian sauna in their unique rassoul chambers, a vitality pool and a dream journey room complete with therapeutic lighting, music and aromas.

The treatment: This Turkish-inspired treatment is combined with a selection of rejuvenating massage techniques to ensure full relaxation. After a consultation session, where you can choose the desired results of the treatments (soften skin, diminished cellulite, improved blood circulation and more), you will be led

to the steam suite. There a special mineral-rich mud, created especially for your treatment, will be applied to your whole body. Once encased itÕ s just a case of sitting there amid the steam for around 15-30 minutes until the mineral extracts have been fully absorbed by your skin. You then wash off the mud, and follow it up with a 60-minute oil massage. You end the treatment with a plunge into cool (14 degree Celsius) and hot (40 degree) vitality pools that help stimulate the lymphatic system and improve circulation.

Why we love it: The view is stunning, the space itself is very beautiful and the experience of being covered in mud is pretty unique.

hyperthermia infrared Bed

The detail: 30 minutes, B3,500

The place: Set behind the Eight Thonglor Complex in the heart of this trendy neighborhood, Apex Media Spa is the cityÕ s latest total-rejuvenating-retreat. It features a restaurant, swimming pool and options ranging from three-hour spa treatments to seven-day weight-loss packages, with hotel-style rooms available for these longer stay wellness programs.

The treatment: This treatment aims to detox your bodyÕ s cells of their polluting elements through the power of infrared light. After a standard medical check-up, you will be wrapped with foil sheets and then told to lay down on a space-age looking infrared bed for approximately 30 minutes. The bed works via a series of inbuilt infrared lights which heat up the cellsÕ

temperature to 39 degree Celsius, forcing your cells to sweat out all those nasty toxins. The end result is cleaner, healthier and stronger cells. The treatment is at its most effective when followed by a lymphatic massage that helps stimulate blood flow and circulation.

Why we love it: Owned by a doctor, the Apex brand of beauty clinics have been a long-time favorite among Bangkokians thanks to their range of innovative rejuvenating treatments and professional levels of service. The dŽ cor might not be as Zen-like as some spas but you can expect cutting edge treatments and equipment to get impressive results.

Fedora Treatment

The details: 150 minutes, B4,600

The place: Tucked away in the very heart of this stately hotel, the spa is a soothing sanctuary just meters from BTS and MRT stations. Ascend the wide staircase and step through the imposing wooden gate to be greeted with an impressive white space that has an almost heavenly quality. Follow the reflective glass river to the reception, which then leads onto a corridor containing 14 individual rooms and suites each hidden behind their own Thai-style wooden doors.

The treatment: This 2.5-hour treatment has been especially designed to tackle the heat and humidity of the rainy season. Start off with a 30-minute soak in the expansive and deep bath filled with bright yellow chamomile flowers and tea tree blend essential oil to relax and rehydrate your skin. Then itÕ s time for a 30-minute green tea, turmeric and charcoal body scrub to remove any impurities brought about by the seasonal downpours and the blistering sun. Finish off with a stress-relieving and re-energizing Swedish massage.

Why we love it: The reception and rooms are a delight and can help rebalance your chi before you even start the treatment. The Fedora leaves you feeling wonderfully cleansed, calm and cool, a boon during the hot, wet and sticky summer months.

EaSy Way To cuRE Back pain

YouÕ re suffering from a backpain caused by your long-haul flight? Rungravee Ruksaksakul, Director of Spa at the Seasons Spa, Conrad, says the best way to recover is for you to lie on a hard surface for as long as possible. Try and sit straight and donÕ t lay on a soft matress. If the pain lasts, you may need to see a specialist.

coco crush collagen

The details: 210 minutes, B6,450

The place: Tucked down a small soi close to the bustle of Silom, Divana Virtue Spa is authentic yet homely. Situated in a century-old house, decked out in an authentic Rama V style, it sits among a small yet lush garden to create a very private and calming atmosphere.

The treatment: There are seven steps, featuring everything from masks and scrubs to massages for face and body, with each step utilizing coconut in some way, whether itÕ s fresh coconut in the mask and body scrub, organic coconut oil in the body massage to coconut milk in the collagen body massage and hot steam bath. Coconut has been used for generations thanks to its

healing properties, especially for skin trying to cope with the vagaries of the tropical weather. Fresh coconut has been shown to contain large amounts of the estrogen hormone, which can be beneficial for both men and women who want softer, brighter skin; coconut cream helps nourish skin, while coconut oil offers protection from UV rays.

Why we love it: The size and dŽ cor of the spa and treatment rooms makes every guest feel very relaxed and at home. Despite using some imported spa products, Divana has also developed its own line, using fresh local ingredients.

Salt pot compress

The details: 120 minutes, B1,500

The place: Located in a small compound a few minutesÕ walk from BTS Phloenchit, Ruamrudee Health Massage utilizes plenty of traditional Thai style, and techniques, to impress their mostly foreign customers. Lots of light wood and mood lighting help create a simple but suitably serene atmosphere.

The treatment: There are two options for the salt pot massage, either combined with a Thai massage or with an oil massage. After the massage, the masseuse then fills a clay pot with pure sea salt and sets fire to it. This is wrapped in a selection of chopped herbs and muslin to form a hot herbal compressÑ called louk

pra kob in Thai. This compress is then applied to various parts of your body. The salt retains heat, which helps force natural oils and extracts from the herbs into your skin. Thai herbs relieve stress, improve blood circulation and rejuvenate the skin.

Why we love it: While it might not be one for the sensitive, as the compress can be pretty hot, we say no pain no gain Ñ it really does help ease stiff muscles.

Dr. Pakpilai Thavisin from S Medical Spa explains that a colon hydrotherapy session helps eliminate the waste materials that have accumulated in the digestive system over years. The waste materials from our daily food form Ò mucoid,Ó a kind of toxic substance, which coats the intestinal wall. The body can then reabsorb these toxins back into our bloodstream, which leads to problems like muscle pain and migraines.

Summer

The detail: 120 minutes, B4,900

The place: The newly renovated Seasons Spa is discovered inside the stylish Conrad Hotel Bangkok, favored among business types and embassy staff in this high-end neighborhood. The decor sees a combination of five-star facilities and oriental designs, with a use of raw earth materials like natural woods and stone.

The treatment: Their spa treatments are inspired by the four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter. Our personal favorite, and perfect for the current Thai weather, is their Summer Package, which combines a body scrub, using local herbs like plai and turmeric mixed with honey and yogurt, followed by its signature, medium-pressure Seasons Spa Massage to ease any aches and pains.

If you are not a fan of scrubs then you can also copt for the tropical fruit body wrap instead.

Why we love it: The elegant decor, the refreshing scrub and the opportunity to enjoy a drink at the sohisticated and sexy Diplomat bar in the lobby downstairs afterwards.

The north Elegance

The detail: 180 minutes, B5,200

The place: Set inside the uber stylish design hotel LIT Bangkok near the cityÕ s main shopping district, Kiriya Spa keeps you away from the world outside with its dimly-lit, cave like interior thatÕ s filled with Thai artifacts.

The treatment: All treatments are inspired by Thai wellness rituals drawn from the four major regions. The North Elegance combines three main steps: a body scrub with honey and local herbs like turmeric, lemongrass and plai roots, a hot herbal compress that aims to relieve tension; and, finally, a gentle aromatic massage that uses organic oil with hints of pine, olive and neroli.

Why we love it: Apart from the hotelÕ s and spaÕ s designs, the treatment package is perfect for those who are not used to a heavier traditional Thai massage but still want to relieve the stresses and strain caused by travel.

AROUND THAILANDY

Visiting the UNESCO World Heritage City of Ayutthaya is an absolute must-do when visiting Thailand. There are many ways to get there (you can even ride the 76km on a bicycle, though we wouldnÕ t advise it), but a journey by boat along The River of Kings is probably the most charming and leisurely choiceÑ and definitely the most luxurious. The three-day Anantara Cruise makes stops in picturesque villages and exquisite temples on the way but we think the best part is the on-board experience, where delicious Thai food and five-star service await.

Day 1: The floating hotel embarks from Anantara Bangkok Riverside, heading to the Temple of Dawn, or Wat Arun, one of the most iconic sights in Bangkok. Here you will enjoy the beauty of this royal temple where King Taksin first moored his ship, at dawn, after fleeing the war-ravaged capital of Ayutthaya. Next, pop into the Royal Barges National Museum, which stores delicately carved boats gilded with gold. After visits to the

historic Wat Pathum Khongkha and Wat Samakkiyaram temples, itÕ s then time to watch the sunset before enjoying your first Thai dinner and nightÕ s sleep on board.

Day 2: Start your morning by making merit at Wat Samakkiyaram, then take a little trek around the local area before hopping back on board. After lunch, you will stop at Wat Panancherng to pay homage to ThailandÕ s largest ancient Buddha image, built way back in 1344. Feeling romantic? The Phranang Sroi Dok Mak Shrine situated right next to the temple is where locals pray for loveÑ results guaranteed. Then a limousine with a tour guide will take you on an exploration of the amazing UNESCO World Heritage site of Ayutthaya, finishing with an elephant ride back to the boat.

Day 3: Start your day with a short walk to visit Wat Niwet Thammaprawat and its Gothic-style ordination hall, then get a glimpse of what life at the Royal Court was like at King Rama VÕ s Bang Pa In Summer

Palace. Finally, spend your tripÕ s last hour at the Bang Sai Royal Folk Arts and Crafts Center, where you can browse Siamese handicrafts such as silk, furniture and traditional dolls before heading back by boat to Bangkok.

Prices are from B44,000 for a two-person cabin, and available via Anantara Cruise www.bangkok-cruises.anantara.com.

Cruise the Mekong8 days. Nong Khai-UbonratchathaniCruising southward along the Mekong River lets you explore some hidden riverside gems not only in Thailand but also neighboring Laos. The cruise embarks from Nong Khai province, and guests will spend their first night on board with a traditional Thai meal and a spot of pampering before striking out downstream in earnest the next day. The first four days will offer the chance to take in a number of Nong KhaiÕ s historic sites including Phu Khading Village, Nam Khading River and a small town where VietnamÕ s most lauded son, Ho Chi Minh, used to live in the late 1920s. The final two days see your boat move into Ubonratchathani and Nakhon Phanom

provinces, where you can visit some of ThailandÕ s most sacred temples, including Wat Phra That Phanom, before you catch your flight back to Bangkok.

You can choose to travel downstream from Nong Khai, or upstream from Ubonratchathani, boat trips last eight days. Prices are from ¤3,380 (B134,000) for a two-person cabin, inclusive of all meals. www.cruisemekong.com

Emotional Voyage4 days, 3 nights. KanchanaburiStep aboard the RV River Kwai, a colonial-style teakwood river cruiser, at Kanchanaburi, just to the west of Bangkok and get ready to spend 4 days exploring the River Kwai Noi. Day one will see you visit the infamous River Kwai Bridge and the sobering war museum set up to

remember all those who were interned as Prisoners of War in this area. The rest of the trip includes visits to caves, temples, historical parks and Hell Fire Pass, part of the notorious Death Railway. As you relax amid the comfortable facilities of the boat you can be assured of enjoying some spectacular scenery, with the river seeming to cut a swathe through unspoilt and vertiginous tree-clad mountains.

Price is B16,200 per person, inclusive of all meals. www.cruiseasia.net.

If you tire of the beach during your stay on the Eastern Seaboard then you can always take a step back in time with a journey to Rayong CityÕ s old Chinese quarter, focused around Yomjindra Road. A quiet and sleepy street of pretty wooden and stone shophouses during the day, it turns into a bustling thoroughfare at night with an array

of bric-a-brac stores, museums, cafes and restaurants to tempt the wallet and the taste buds. ItÕ s best to come after 7pm when the heat of the day has died down. Highlights include grabbing a tea or soda at authentic coffee shops, sampling some noodles or trying traditional Thai sweets.Rayong is 2.30-hour drive from Bangkok.

EX ChangesMuch less well known than its bigger, louder near-neighbor Pattaya, Rayong is a quieter and more offbeat beach destination located not too far from Bangkok. There are certainly plenty of options when it comes to beachfront resorts along this stretch of coastline, ranging from no-frills to high-end design. One of our favorites, fitting firmly into the latter category, is the former X2 Rayong, which has just been rebranded the Centara Sappaya Design Resort. The 13-room boutique resort has a cool, minimal design and seems to tumble down a steep hillside to the large pool and a lovely, quiet beach. Its tempting low-season rates are B3,500 for a room to B12,000 for a suite until October 31. Above 11The latest drinking and dining option to arrive on nightlife strip Sukhumvit Soi 11 is Above 11, a rooftop bar and restaurant up on the 32nd floor of the Fraser Suites. The twist is the concept, as Above 11 focuses on Nikkei cuisine, a fusion of Japanese and Peruvian flavors resulting from the large wave of Japanese emigration to the South American country over 120 years ago. The result is a brief but intriguing menu featuring Nikkei classics like cebiche (B550) which combines seabass, prawns and a spicy sauce topped with deep fried calamari, and sudado (B530), a traditional Peruvian fish stew with clams in aji amarillo chili and Japanese pumpkin broth. It’s all served in a charming semi-alfresco setting that features fake grass, tree-shaped lamps and an outdoor space filled with wooden seating. Sukhumvit Soi 38Thai cuisine with its intriguing (if sometimes bewildering) blends of spices, aromas and flavors is justifiably famous the world over, which is why visitors to Bangkok are so keen to try the real thing for themselves. While there are plenty of good Thai restaurants in the city, if you want the real deal, then you have to hit the streets. Stalls and carts are literally everywhere, but for a simple, central spot that has a good range of dishes, your best bet is to head to Sukhumvit Soi 38 (by BTS Thong Lo) after 7pm. On this side street youÕ ll find a host of stalls offering everything from a classic pad Thai to a bowl of bamee moo daeng (egg noodles with roast pork). Personally, we love the sweet treats here: donÕ t miss the mango sticky rice from the stall in a small alley on the right hand side as you enter the soi; or try the cheng sim ii, a Thai-Chinese dessert featuring a mix of nuts and longan juice, available at one of the last stalls on the left hand side of the street. To get there, catch the free ferry from Sathorn Pier (BTS Saphan Taksin). 2194 Charoenkrung Rd., 02-108-4488.

AIRPORT LINkÑ The Airport Rail Link (ARL) is one of the fastest and cheapest ways to get to and from Suvarnabhumi Airport, especially for those traveling light. There are two types of trains: Express Line and City Line. The ARL Express Line runs from Suvarnabhumi to either Phaya Thai (connecting to the BTS) or Makkasan stations (connecting to the MRT, but itÕ s a long walk to MRT Petchaburi), and takes 15 minutes. The City Line stops at six stations and takes around 30 minutes. THAI Airways passen-gers boarding the Express Line can check their bags at Makkasan City Terminal. Fares are B15-B45 for City Line and B90 for Express Line. More information at airportraillink.railway.co.th.

CANAL BOATS Ñ While Bangkok used to be the Venice of the East, there is now only one canal still used as a means of getting around. Klong Saen Saep canal has a ferry service that runs daily from Ban Kapi in the Eastern suburbs to Phu Khao Thong or the Golden Mount in the heart of the Old Town, stopping off at various piers along the way. Be warned though, the boats donÕ t wait long at the piers, making getting on and off rather nerve-wracking (and physically-challenging). And, due to the unsavory nature of the canal (klong) water, any

picturesque view is blocked by sheets of tarpaulin to prevent splashing. Fares are between B9 and B19, depending on distance and are purchased on board.

BUSESÑ The bus is a popular (if slow) budget-travel choice in Bangkok. The Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) operates an extensive number of routes throughout Bangkok and its nearby provinces. There are two types of buses: non-air-con and air-con. Fares for non-air-con buses are B6.5-7.5 while fares for air-conditioned buses are B10-23, depend-ing on the distance. Fares are paid to on-board staff, who rarely speak English. Visit www.bmta.co.th for a list of routes and schedules.

EXPRESS RIVER BOATSÑ These fast, frequent and cheap ferries along the Chao Phraya River are a great way to get a different perspective on the city, as well as a good option for getting to many of the temples and palaces built along the river. The main Sathorn (Central) pier is located by BTS Saphan Taksin with boats heading upstream from here and stopping off at numerous piers all the way to Nonthaburi. Fares range from B9 to B32 depending on distance. You can also opt for a tourist ticket (B150), which allows one-day unlimited travel and comes with an excellent guide booklet to some of the leading tourist attractions accessible from the river.

INTERCITy BUSESÑ There are three main stations for buses out of town. The Northern Bus Ter-minal or Mo Chit (02-936-2841/-3) is located a taxi ride away from Mo Chit BTS/Kamphaeng Phet MRT and services Northern and Northeastern Thailand as well as some Eastern destinations. The Eastern Bus Terminal (02-391-2504) is located right by BTS Ekka-mai and has buses departing to Pattaya, Rayong, Koh Samed and Trat. Finally, the Southern Bus Terminal or Sai Tai (02-894-6122) is located across the river at Thonburi on Boromratchachonnanee Road and servic-es Western (Kanchanaburi) and Southern Thailand, including the islands of Phuket and Samui.

TUk-TUkÑ Tuk-tuks are a noisy but fun way of getting around Bangkok, not to mention great photo opportunities. However, there is no guarantee of beating the infamous traffic and you should agree on a price before getting in. Haggle hard and be wary of any cheap offers if you donÕ t want an unexpected trip to a tailor or gem store.

TAXISÑ Bangkok metered taxis are readily avail-able and very affordable, with fares starting from B35 for the first two kilometers. Despite their many colors, thereÕ s no difference in prices and service. Some driv-ers speak limited English, so do get your destination written down in Thai to avoid any miscommunication. Taxis sometimes try to negotiate a price. Make sure to only pay the metered price.

SkyTRAIN/UNDERgROUNDÑ The Bangkok Skytrain (BTS) stops at BangkokÕ s main districts and gives you a birdÕ s eye view of the city. There are two main lines: the Silom Line, which runs from across the river in Wongwian Yai to National Stadium; and the Sukhumvit Line, which runs from Soi Bearing in the eastern part of the city along Sukhumvit before heading north up to Mo Chit station. Siam is the interchange station for the two lines.

The underground, or MRT, is one line but has an extensive reach, from Hua Lamphong train station on the outskirts of Chinatown, down through the main Central Business District before turning North and heading up Ratchadapisek Road past Chatuchak Market and ending at Bang Sue station.

There are interchange stations between the MRT and BTS at Sukhumvit (MRT)/Asoke (BTS) and Silom (MRT)/Sala Daeng (BTS).

Fares are B15-B40 for both trains. Tickets can be bought for individual journeys, or you can get special one-day tourist passes or tickets that cover a specified number of trips. For more information, go to www.bts.co.th and www.bangkokmetro.co.th. Note that the BTS and MRT use different ticketing systems.

ATMSÑ ATMs are very common in Bangkok and can be found in most areas of Thailand, often located outside of 7-Eleven convenience stores. You should eas-ily be able to use overseas cards to withdraw money.

LIST Of BANkS Ñ Banking hours are generally from 8:30am to 3:30pm, Monday through Friday except on public holidays and bank holidays. Banks in malls open daily, 10am-8pm. The main banks are: Bankgok Bank (1333, www.bangkokbank.com), Bank of Ayudhya (1572, www.krungsri.com), CIMB Thai (02-626-7777, www.cimbthai.com), Kasikorn Bank (02-888-8888, www.kasikornbank.com), Kiatnakin Bank (02-680-3333, www.kiatnakin.co.th), Krungthai Bank (1551, www.ktb.co.th), Siam Commercial Bank (02-777-7777, www.scb.co.th), Standard Chartered Bank (1595, www.standardchartered.co.th), Thana-chart Bank (1770, www.thanachartbank.com), Tisco Bank (www.tisco.co.th), TMB Bank (02-299-1111, www.tmbbank.com), United Overseas Bank (02-285-1555, www.uob.co.th).

HOSPITALS Ñ Bumrungrad International, (Sukhumvit Soi 1-3, 02-667-1000, emergency 02-667-2999), Bangkok Hospital (Soi Soonvijai, Petchaburi Rd., 02-310-3000), BNH Hospital (Convent Rd., 02-686-2700), Samitivej Sukhumvit (Sukhumvit 49, 02-711-8181), Siriraj SiPH (Phran-nok Rd., 1474).
