We hope this guide serves as a useful tool for selecting meeting, convention and

hospitality facilities in the Albany-Saratoga, Buffalo Niagara, Rochester and Syracuse-Central New York areas.

We compiled this guide by offering hoteliers and the owners of meeting and banquet facilities in the four regions the opportunity to provide detailed information about their properties and services.

This collaborative publication has a readership of more than 200,000 and is a supplement in The Business Review in Albany; Business First in the Buffalo Niagara area; the Rochester Business Journal; and the Central New York Business Journal, Mohawk Valley and Greater Binghamton.

We’d like to thank our sponsors: Visit Rochester, Splash Lagoon and Turning Stone Resort • Casino.

■ The Albany-Saratoga region at a glance

The Capital Region is probably best recog-nized as New York’s home base for state govern-ment, but it’s much more than that.

The core four-county area, with a combined population of 826,000, is sandwiched mostly between the Hudson and Mohawk rivers. Each county offers vibrant arts and culture districts, a cadre of fine dining restaurants, golf courses and shopping outlets.

Its four most visited cities—Albany, Schenect-ady, Troy and Saratoga Springs—have hotels and meeting and convention facilities for groups of all sizes (see the list, which begins on page 10). There are also such attractions as the his-toric Proctors theater in Schenectady, The Egg performing arts center and Times Union Center in Albany, Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs and the landmark Troy Savings Bank Music Hall in Troy (to name a few).

During the summer months, visitors come to watch the thoroughbreds at Saratoga Race Course, take in a meal and peruse specialty shops in downtown Saratoga Springs. Albany,

Schenectady and Troy have their own down-towns, too—each enjoying a resurgence and offering a diverse dining and arts scene.

Meanwhile, the Capital Region is busy doing business. It represents a large piece of Tech Valley, an upstate region that continues to lure scientists and engineers from around the world to General Electric Co., Albany Molecu-lar Research Inc., the University at Albany’s College of Nanoscale Science and Engineer-ing, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy and other technology companies. The Capital Region recently attracted Sunnyvale, California-based GlobalFoundries Inc. The computer chip maker is building a $4.6 billion manufacturing plant in Malta, about 25 miles north of Albany in southern Saratoga County, that is expected to employ 1,400 people when it is fully opera-tional in 2014.

Learn more about the region in these pages, including the area’s eclectic dining scene on the facing page.

Capital Region palates have become more

adventurous in the last decade, and those eclectic tastes have encouraged a growing number of ethnic restaurants.

One reason: A more sophisticated population is evolving. As internation-al companies move in and local companies recruit tech-savvy workers, those new job opportunities attract younger people from different cultures.

Menu diversity means more choices for corpo-rate visitors who come to the area for meetings and conventions.

“We’re seeing a lot of growth in foreign com-panies. Once that starts happening, it adds to the dimension of a commu-nity,” said Pradeep Haldar, vice president of clean energy programs at the University at Albany’s Col-lege of Nanoscale Science and Engineering.

Haldar spent his earlier years in his home country of India before coming to the United States. When he arrived in the Albany area 20 years ago, there were two Indian restau-rants. Culinary options have mushroomed since then.

Today, there are prob-ably 20 Indian restau-rants—and countless oth-

ers serving Turkish, Iraqi and other Middle Eastern cuisines. There is also a proliferation of Thai, Vietnamese and Japanese food, and more contempo-rary fusion, New American and sustainable menus.

Here’s another reason for the growing number of unique, independent restaurants: There’s a much larger pool of tal-ented chefs now. Nearby Schenectady County Com-munity College has three culinary programs that graduate about 500 stu-dents a year.

Some of those young chefs are opening their own restaurants; others are bringing new ideas to older restaurants.

“We’re seeing a ground-swell of new places,” said

Toby Strianese, a profes-sor at the community college and former chair-man of the school’s hotel, culinary arts and tourism department.

And those new places are being supported by a relatively stable economy. The state’s capital city of Albany and surrounding communities have avoid-ed some of the highs and lows seen in other parts of the country due to the large number of health care, education, legal and government jobs.

The region’s growing technology sector, which now employs 21,000, adds even greater diversity as the area’s economic devel-opment initiatives con-tinue to lure scientists and engineers from around the world.

In the past 30 years, the region’s largest cit-ies—Albany, Schenectady, Saratoga Springs and Troy—have developed revitalization strategies. All of those strategies stress the importance of quality restaurants.

High-end chain restau-rants are also making their mark here.

Cheesecake Factory, P.F. Chang’s China Bistro and The Melting Pot have all opened locations in the Capital Region in the last three years.

They, too, are a sign of the Capital Region’s changing tastes.

Albany’s own celebrity chef, Ric Orlando is known for his experimental and Cuban flavors. Executive chef at Ric Orlando’s New World Bistro Bar in Albany, he also owns of Ric Orlan-do’s New World Home Cooking in Ulster County, and has appeared on the Food Network.

Edward HealyVice president of marketing,Buffalo Niagara Convention & Visitors Bureau

It’s going to be something when an estimated 2,000 visitors come to Western New York this fall for

the National Preservation Conference.Architects, planners, history buffs

and more from across the country and Canada will arrive here for “Alternating Currents,” the 2011 event of the Nation-al Trust for Historic Preservation. What they’ll get is an up-close look at a region that is a hotbed of cultural heri-tage tourism.

“Buffalo is the perfect laboratory for examining and debating the alternating currents of preservation,” the National Trust says on its website. “Get a sneak preview of the city’s rich cultural heri-tage – the American Arts and Crafts movement, Olmsted parks, buildings designed by every major 20th Century architect and more – and see how it’s at the leading edge of creative urban revitalization.”

People and places around the region are gearing up for the big event, set for Oct. 19-22.

• “We can’t wait to welcome the world here,” says Margie Stehlik, direc-tor of operations for the Darwin D. Martin House, which was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built in Buffalo in the early 1900s.

• “Buffalo is being recognized by cul-turally savvy travelers because of the wealth of genuine Americana that can be found in our region,” says Edward Healy, vice president of marketing for the Buffalo Niagara Convention & Visi-tors Bureau.

• “I think it’s an excellent opportuni-ty for us to showcase the entire region and the richness and the long list of (tourism) product offerings,” says John Percy, president/CEO of Niagara Tour-ism and Convention Corp.

Cultural heritage tourism is big

in these parts and getting bigger, according to Percy. And it’s easy to understand why, especially when the National Trust defines this branch of the hospitality market as “traveling to experience the places and activities that authentically represent the stories and people of the past and present, including historic, cultural and natural attractions.”

Western New York has all that and more for everyone from students and families to senior citizens.

“I think there is a rising interest in the arena of history and heritage, and this area really provides a great wealth in that arena,” Percy says. “There is a richness, and we as a country have taken hold of it and tried to preserve our richness and depth of product. People and communities all over are trying to make it a priority, whether you’re in Gettysburg or here or in D.C.

It’s nice to see.”Experience us and you’ll be hooked,

says Healy of the CVB.“Our customer research reveals that

visitors to Buffalo are increasingly aware of our rich history, magnificent architec-ture, incredible art scene and the Arts and Crafts attractions at the Roycroft Campus in East Aurora. Visitors also come from great distances to experi-ence festivals and special events like the (Chicken) Wing Festival and Garden Walk Buffalo. Thanks in large part to some very positive media attention over the course of the last couple of years, word is getting out about Buffalo as a cultural tourism destination,” he says. “We are no longer the best-kept secret.”

He recalled a New York Times article several years ago that described the region as a “living history lesson.”

“Whether it’s Erie Canal Harbor, the Colored Musician’s Club, Graycliff, Old Fort Niagara, the Anchor Bar, a Forgot-ten Buffalo tour or the Taste of Buffalo, Buffalo looks and feels different from the more homogenized communities found in much of contemporary America,” Healy says. “Our gorgeous turn-of-the-century houses, tree-lined streets, mom-and-pop stores, regional cuisine and superb cul-tural attractions allow visitors to step outside of their lives and experience an America that in many places has disap-peared. And, of course, the proximity of one of the wonders of the world at Niagara Falls is something that virtually every visitor to Buffalo Niagara wants to experience.”

Add to the mix a friendly reputation and it’s clear that this area shines.

Convention and tourism agencies spread the word in a variety of ways: printed visitors guides, consumer-oriented websites, videos, podcasts and aggressive advertising on national and international levels. They say there has never been a better time to check out the region, whether it’s leisure tourists searching for some hot spots or a trade

group looking for a unique place to hold its next convention.

Look no further, says architect Clinton Brown, whose Buffalo firm focuses on historic preservation projects. He sees growing interest in historic sites as meet-ing spots for groups large and small.

“Buffalo has an abundance of places of high and authentic character for savvy travelers and creative people who want to stay somewhere unique -- whether it’s the bread-and-breakfast in the Linwood Historic District, a mansion on Delaware Avenue or, hopefully someday, the reno-vated Hotel Lafayette or Hotel Statler,” Brown says.

“Sometimes a gracious setting brings out the best in the meeting attendee,” he adds. “It’s an environment that stimulates fresh thinking and creative thinking.”

Western New York is the place to beSays Brown: “It’s convenient to get in

and out of, and spending the day in a beautiful, restored building is refreshing, compared to the options most of us get for standard (meeting space).”

Of course, when traditional meeting standard space is wanted and needed, there’s plenty available. The Buffalo Niagara Convention Center, for example, hosts several hundred events each year and accommodates groups of all types and size. It offers more than 111,000 square feet of space and 21 meeting rooms.

To the north is The Conference Center Niagara Falls, which describes itself as a technologically advanced, sensibly priced venue that offers world-class ser-vice and gourmet cuisine. With 15 meet-ing rooms, it offers 116,000 square feet of flexible meeting space in downtown Niagara Falls.

There’s also great space available in everything from downtown and suburban hotels to restaurants, college campuses and even ski resorts.

For Brown, however, it’s all about the older spots around town.

“Oftentimes you find that the staff at a historic hotel or historic meeting place love where they work,” he says. “There’s a certain spirit in the staff, as well as in the walls.”

That seems to be the case at two well-known sites in Buffalo: the aforemen-tioned Martin House complex and the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site.

Places such as these tell a story, according to Janice Kuzan, assistant director of the latter, also known as the Wilcox Mansion. The 19th century Buf-falo mansion – it served as a presidential inaugural site after President William McKinley was shot at the Pan American Exposition in 1901 – offers year-round space for meetings, parties and recep-tions.

“Our actual meeting space is in our (re-created) carriage house,” Kuzan says.

Guided tours helped to attract 17,500 visitors to the Delaware Avenue site in 2010.

“Our guided-tour experience, I will

say, is second to none as far as historic house museums are concerned. We have gone high-tech. (Visitors) actually step back in time,” she says. “We have many interactive exhibits. We do all the senses: There’s sight, there’s sound, there’s even the smell of coffee in the dining room, because T.R. was a great coffee drinker.”

The Martin House on Jewett Parkway, meanwhile, offers a similarly rich expe-rience with Wright’s world-renowned architecture as a backdrop, according to Stehlik, the operations director. The main phase of a major restoration project is expected to be complete in July, she adds.

“We have a site designed by Frank Lloyd Wright at the turn of the last centu-ry that is unrivaled in terms of its beauty and its importance,” she says. “It’s a site that has six structures integrated into a landscape that he designed in the early part of his career.”

The complex offers a variety of space available for meetings, conferences and social events, including the Eleanor and Wilson Greatbatch Pavilion, the Barton House and the Gardener’s Cottage.

“It was the high-water mark in Wright’s career in terms of art glass,” Stehlik says. “We have 394 art glass windows that (he) designed for this property in 16 different patterns. Can you imagine? And all of it is integrated with the natural environment.”

From Buffalo to Niagara Falls, NY, the region is a prime destination for cultural heritage tourism, says Percy of Niagara Tourism and Convention Corp. And the National Preservation Conference has everyone in the local hospitality scene excited.

“It’s another element to help us gain credibility and put us on the map in this realm of preservation and historic settings that we compete with around the country,” he says. “Everybody has some sort of historical element these days; ours are unique. This will give us a chance to showcase that and really set us apart.”

When it comes to cities that are fun places to visit,

Rochester may not be on your radar. If you know of Rochester only as the

home of Eastman Kodak Co., you might expect New York’s third-largest city to be pleasant enough—a decent, if ho-hum, stop along the way to somewhere else. What you don’t know may surprise you.

Greater Rochester typically places high in rankings that examine a host of community features, such as overall qual-ity of life, cultural attractions, outdoor recreation, quick commute time, housing affordability, smart work force, business innovation and access to great health care.

To be a great place to live, a city needs to be more than just OK. It needs world-class amenities as well as quirks and features that make it unique among cities everywhere.

Just over a million people live in Greater Rochester. Visitors and residents tap into

big-city arts, music, theater, dance, fes-tivals and dining, accessible pro sports, hundreds of miles of hiking and biking trails and some of the most beautiful ter-rain in the United States.

Cultural gemOur top music school and philharmon-

ic orchestra are at the root of Rochester’s cultural offerings. Visitors often remark at the level of sophistication evident in our music, which ranges from operas staged in historic Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre to jazz trios in cozy clubs. There is music every night of the week in ven-ues all over town.

The Eastman School of Music and Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra anchor the East End, where the annual Rochester International Jazz Festival will celebrate its 10th running this June. Over its nine days in 2010, the festival drew 162,000 music lovers to 250 concerts by hundreds of musicians from around the world.

Rochester has an abundance of live theater. Among the big players are Geva

Theatre Center—the highest-attended regional theater in New York—Mercury Opera Rochester, Downstairs Cabaret Theatre, Blackfriars Theatre and Center-Stage at the Jewish Community Center. Traveling Broadway shows are staged regularly at the Auditorium Theatre.

In the world of dance, Rochester’s own Garth Fagan Dance, an award-winning modern dance company, sells out shows around the globe. The company is based downtown. Rochester City Ballet has a distinguished presence in the region and brings talented choreographers and performers to Rochester. Push Physical Theatre’s blend of dance and theater is cutting-edge and draws raves, and Futur-Pointe Dance is winning fans with its con-temporary fusion dance.

The visual arts thrive in Rochester. Painting, sculpture, metalworking and woodworking programs at the area’s col-leges and universities produce talented alumni. These creators strengthen the arts in Rochester during their college years and after graduation.

The Memorial Art Gallery hosts

blockbuster shows; past crowd-pleasers included Russian icons and the works of Georgia O’Keeffe, Maxfield Parrish and Edgar Degas. The massive collection at Artisan Works also is a visual treat. The museum transformed 60,000 square feet of former warehouse space with 15,000 original works; surprises await at every turn. First Fridays open houses, held on the first Friday of every month, make it easy to catch art exhibits at dozens of local galleries. Anderson Alley Artists also open their studio doors during Sec-ond Saturdays.

Photography and film are popular art forms in Rochester. We’re home to Kodak, after all, and Rochester Institute of Technology, which has strong photog-raphy programs. You’ll discover rotat-ing exhibitions in the city and suburbs, including at the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film. Work by the plethora of talent-ed photographers who live here is exhib-ited at Image City Photography Gallery in the Neighborhood of the Arts, where a new show is mounted every month. We

celebrate film with the respected 360 | 365 George Eastman House Film Festival, the Rochester Jewish Film Festival and ImageOut, the lesbian and gay film and video festival.

NightlifeFor a night on the town, some of the best

attractions can be found in these areas:■ East and Alexander: Eclectic cuisine,

late-night clubs, British pubs and 20-some-thing watering holes. Bring your ID.

■ East End: Local theater, the Eastman School of Music and Eastman Theatre, the historic Little Theatre movie house, jazz clubs, popular restaurants, comfort-able cafes. Soak in the vibe.

■ Charlotte: Patio dining and drinks, beach and boardwalk, park concerts and ice cream. Bring the kids.

■ Monroe Avenue: Sports bars and international eateries, unique shops. Tat-toos encouraged.

■ Neighborhood of the Arts: Restau-rants, galleries, antiques. A feast for the senses.

■ Park Avenue: Al fresco dining, cafes, boutiques. Prime people-watching.

■ St. Paul Quarter: Martinis and dinner, dance clubs, salsa lessons, national club acts. Wear your dancing shoes.

■ South Wedge: Cafes, Cajun barbecue, boutiques, wine and beer with a smile. Come as you are.

Dining diversityIn fact, everywhere you go in Roch-

ester you’ll find excellent restaurants. Downtown and in surrounding neighbor-hoods, there’s no shortage of cuisine that spans the globe—Indian, Thai, Vietnam-ese, Italian, Chinese, Ethiopian, French, German, sushi, steak and seafood, conti-nental, vegetarian and fusion-everything. Try something new while you’re here.

Uniquely RochesterRochester’s prominent role in the

history of film takes center stage at the George Eastman House. Besides its revolving exhibitions, it holds the per-sonal film collections of Martin Scors-ese, Spike Lee and others. It’s also the 50-room mansion of Kodak’s founder.

Susan B. Anthony, the pioneer leader of the women’s rights movement, lived at 17 Madison St. with her sister. Today the house is a museum filled with photos and mementos of her life.

Genesee Country Village & Museum is one of the three largest living-his-tory museums in the country, with 70 restored 19th-century buildings and cos-tumed interpreters. The Strong National Museum of Play ranks among the top 10 children’s museums in the country. Rochester Museum & Science Center has a planetarium and three floors of interac-tive exhibits on science and technology, natural science and the region’s cultural heritage.

OutsideOutdoor enthusiasts will find more than

260 miles of multi-use trails and at least 70 neighborhood trails in the area. The Genesee Riverway Trail runs from the Erie Canal through downtown all the way to Lake Ontario along the Genesee River. See three waterfalls, the river gorge and 11 parks on the way. Go for a run along the Erie Canal, or take a self-guided tour of Rochester’s historic downtown. Favorite sights are the Powers Building, the world headquarters of Kodak and Bausch & Lomb, Xerox Tower and the Broad Street Aqueduct, which once carried the Erie Canal across the Genesee River.

Visit our parks designed by famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olm-sted: Seneca Park, with its steep river gorge and popular zoo; Genesee Valley Park, where the river hosts a collegiate rowing regatta every fall; and Highland Park, home of the 110-year-old Lilac Fes-tival. One of the best city neighborhoods

for a stroll is the residential area around Park and East avenues.

If you have the time, take a drive to the Finger Lakes and stop in to visit some of the 100 wineries in this fast-growing wine region.

Festival townWhen the weather turns warm in May,

Rochester launches into one of the busi-est festival seasons around. (We rank high for the number of festivals per capita.) Some of the most popular are the Lilac Festival, Rochester International Jazz Festival, Corn Hill Arts Festival, Park Ave Summer Arts Fest and Clothesline Festival. Another high-profile event is the LPGA Championship, one of the most popular stops on the women’s golf tour. Greentopia Festival, a new event focusing on green living that debuts in September, will take place in High Falls, a historic area of the city that overlooks Roches-ter’s thundering 96-foot waterfall on the Genesee River.

Down to businessManufacturing was for many years the

bedrock of the area’s economy. Today

innovation and creativity are shifting our city’s course: Companies are emerging in biotechnology, imaging and optics, and fuel-cell research, all new strengths born from our established capabilities in higher education and manufacturing.

Robust high-tech output, innovation and diversity make Greater Rochester one of the 25 best places to live for “super-creatives,” professors, scientists, computer programmers, artists, writers and musicians. The professionals who support these creative fields, such as financial advisers and lawyers, are well-represented too.

Education itself, in fact, has become a prime economic driver. The University of Rochester is the largest employer and is in the midst of a $500 million expansion in medical care and research. Rochester Institute of Technology also is growing rapidly to meet industry demand, along with a dozen other local colleges. More than 80,000 students attend area colleges.

Rochester has long had thousands of small, fast-moving businesses. In addi-tion to Kodak, Bausch & Lomb and Xerox, some of these have grown into far-reaching firms: Paychex Inc.; Constellation Brands Inc., the largest wine company in the world; and Wegmans Food Markets Inc., which has a gourmet approach to groceries and consistently ranks among Fortune’s top places to work. In fact, Roch-ester companies recently have ranked No. 1 in the magazine’s small, medium and large-firm categories.

The region is a national leader in pat-ents, with at least 1,000 granted each year to area inventors, led by scientists at Kodak and Xerox. The patents include developments in new types of film, lens-es, health care products, digital media and printing technology.

A knack for innovation keeps Roches-ter in the game on a global level. As new strengths emerge, the city will continue to re-engineer its course.

Opposite: Nearly 300 miles of multi-use trails crisscross Rochester and the surrounding area. The Genesee Riverway Trail hugs the river, taking riders past three waterfalls, the river’s deep gorge and 11 parks from the Erie Canal to Lake Ontario.

Rochester is known nationally for its

plethora of festivals. The Savor Rochester

Festival of Food is held in the Rochester Public Market, voted

the No. 1 farmers market in the country

in 2010. The festival benefits Foodlink, the

regional food bank.

■ ‘For some groups, the attractions are critical. We really have a wide vari-

ety of attractions that no other city in the state can claim… Others are looking

at our location and our affordability.’

Tracey Kegebeinvice president of sales & services

Syracuse Convention & Visitors Bureau

The Central New York region provides visitors the package deal: a cen-

tral location, convenience of getting around, experience hosting big events, recreation and culture, and a wealth of places to see and things to do.

All that has helped make CNY — including Syracuse, the Mohawk Vally, and Greater Binghamton — a major destination for conventions, confer-ences, business meetings, and special events.

Central New York’s hospitality lead-ers say another draw is the way they personally service visiting groups, helping with all the details associated with hosting a conference or conven-tion.

We turned to the Syracuse Conven-tion & Visitors Bureau, Oneida County Tourism, and the Greater Binghamton Convention and Visitor’s Bureau for more information on what their parts of the region have to offer. Here is the information they provided.

Greater SyracuseThe Syracuse region attracts conven-

tion and business groups for myriad reasons.

“For some groups, the attractions are critical. We really have a wide variety of attractions that no other city in the state can claim,” says Tracey Kegebein, vice president of sales & services at the Syracuse Convention & Visitors Bureau. “Others are looking at our loca-tion and our affordability.”

She adds that many conference organizers seek help obtaining expert speakers for their confabs and are able to find them at the Syracuse area’s universities, hospitals, and technology companies.

The Greater Syracuse area offers lodging choices ranging from quaint bed-and-breakfasts to top-rated resorts, along with the national chains that travelers are accustomed to seeing. The region boasts a diverse selection of dining options, from barbecue to sushi to steaks.

Syracuse’s central location makes accessing the region easy from almost anywhere in the Northeast. It is not only convenient to get to, but also easy to get around. Syracuse is located at the crossroads of two interstate highway systems — the NYS Thruway (I-90) and I-81. More than 175 passenger flights arrive and depart daily from Syracuse Hancock International Airport. It is serviced by seven major airlines and several commuter lines. Onondaga Coach, Greyhound, Syracuse & Oswego, and Adirondack Trailways provide inter-city passenger service. CENTRO offers public transportation in Syracuse and surrounding suburbs. Amtrak pro-vides passenger rail transportation ser-vice from the William F. Walsh Regional Transportation Center. The New York State Canal system encompasses 524 miles and runs east-west across New York State, connecting the Niagara River with the Hudson River.

Syracuse’s recreational and cultural activities are tough to match for a

city of its size. It has more than 50 state, county, and city parks and several nature centers; 40 golf courses (more than any other area in the Northeast); 40 museums and galleries, including the nationally known Everson Museum of Art. The Syra-cuse Opera is Central New York’s only year-round professional opera company. The Syracuse Stage is the region’s premier professional theatre, and the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra is the 28th largest orchestra in the United States. Other popular venues include:

Sports facilities: Syracuse has three major sports stadiums or arenas with activities ongoing year-round. The Car-rier Dome, Alliance Bank Stadium, and the Onondaga County War Memorial at Oncenter offer basketball, football, base-ball, hockey, concerts, and special events.

New York State Fair: Not only is the fair the longest-running state fair in the country, attracting nearly 1 million visi-tors from across the Northeast each year, but the fairgrounds also host other events such as the Syracuse Nationals, the larg-est gathering of rare and classic cars on the East Coast.

Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science & Technology (MOST): The museum offers more than 200 unique, hands-on exhibits and is home to the IMAX-Dome theater, which offers an exciting array of movie adventures.

The Oncenter Complex: Comprised of three buildings, the complex hosts major conventions, meetings, banquets, con-sumer shows, trade shows, fundraisers, expositions, and cultural exhibits.

Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park: The zoo is home to approximately 700 animals on 43 acres. It has been accredit-ed by the Association of Zoos and Aquari-ums since 1987, and is among the top 10 percent of zoos in the country.

Mohawk ValleyThe convenient location, just off the

NYS Thruway (I-90) — Exits 31, 32, and 33 — makes Greater Utica, Rome, and Verona a popular destination. It is 40 min-utes from Hancock International Airport in Syracuse, and Amtrak provides service

with train stations in Utica and Rome.State-of-the-art facilities, numerous ban-

quet halls, and a variety of non-traditional venues provide options and opportunities for meetings. The Mohawk Valley area has more than 2,700 rooms available at AAA Four Diamond resort hotels, national chains, and independently owned prop-erties. Verona currently has yet another new hotel under construction and Vernon Downs broke ground in 2010 on an $8.1 million expansion project, adding more than 16,000 square feet of meeting and conference space, a new restaurant, and outdoor terraces for events.

Need to plan a golf outing? Choose from 28 public courses such as Valley View in Utica designed by Robert Trent Jones, Twin Ponds in New York Mills, or the world-class courses at Turning Stone Resort & Casino — Atunyote, Kaluhyat, and Shenendoah.

Turning Stone Resort & Casino, an enterprise of the Oneida Indian Nation, offers 125,000 square feet of gaming, four hotels, 21 restaurants, five golf courses, an indoor golf-training center, a 5,000-seat event center, an 800-seat showroom, and a conference center. It also has the Lava Dance Club; Skana Spa, a luxury destina-tion spa; hotel day spa and salon; six

retail shops; Sportsplex for indoor tennis and racquetball; and a 175-site RV park. In 2010, Turning Stone hosted for a fourth time the Turning Stone Resort Golf Cham-pionship, the first regularly scheduled PGA Tour event on Indian land.

The Mohawk Valley area also offers other unique attractions and things to do, such as taking in a Broadway show at the historic Stanley Theatre, or a dinner theatre at The Beeches. The region offers exclusive behind-the-scenes factory tours at Saranac Brewery, Harden Furniture, and Meyda Tiffany Lighting. And, experi-ence the trials and tribulations of the Rev-olutionary War at Fort Stanwix National Monument.

Greater BinghamtonAt the confluence of the Susquehanna

and Chenango Rivers lies Greater Bing-

hamton, a region rich in scenic beauty, enchanting villages, and lively cities. Its central location at the junctions of I-81, I-88, and NY 17 (future I-86) make it easily accessible. Add that to the 2,500 first-class overnight accommodations, modern meeting/exhibit facilities, and top-quality sports venues, and you have all the ingre-dients for a successful event.

The region has more than 250 restau-rants, from locally owned and operated eateries to nationally recognized chains. You can shop in quaint antique stores, specialty shops, or top-brand names. Attractions include the Roberson Muse-um & Science Center, the Bundy Arts & Victorian Museum, the Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park, the Discovery Center of the Southern Tier, the Phelps Mansion Museum, Candyland at the Candle Fac-tory, Cider Mill, and Antique Row. Cultur-ally, Binghamton offers art galleries and studios, the Tri-Cities Opera, Binghamton Symphony, traveling and repertory the-atre, and much more.

AHL hockey, AA baseball, Champions Tour golf, USTA tennis, and more than a dozen top-quality golf courses await the sports enthusiast. Parks, campgrounds, and hiking and biking trails are sure to please outdoor fans.

Greater Binghamton has the only car-ousel collection of its kind in the world. Of the fewer than 170 antique carousels remaining in the United States and Cana-da, six are in Greater Binghamton.
