WHITE LION HOUSE Hatfield, Hertfordshire CLIENT: WELWYN HATFIELD BOROUGH COUNCIL VALUE: £700,000 CONTRACT PERIOD: 20 WEEKS COMMUNITY & LEISURE This project formed part of the Council’s larger investment programme aiming to create a better environment for shoppers, businesses and residents in Hatfield. White Lion House is a four storey building in the heart of the town centre comprising of both residential and retail properties. Our Special Works team were awarded this scheme to refurbish and fit out of a vacant, stripped out section of the first floor to create purpose designed offices for two council departments. Works included new external façades, the replacement of all double glazed curtain walling, new internal partitions and suspended ceilings, general decoration works and the installation of new mechanical and electrical services throughout. The construction area was located above 6 small occupied retail units and below 9 two storey maisonettes. Various consideration measures such as avoiding noisy work early in the morning and keeping residents informed throughout helped to ensure disruption was kept to a minimum. Additional works included the installation of a new fire escape to serve the entire building as well as a new staircase and passenger lift on the ground floor where a small entrance lobby for the offices above was formed. Now complete the new facility is home to the Council’s Community Hub and Housing Office and features a large open plan office space, several meeting rooms, resident interview rooms, toilets and a reception.
