The Scarecrow festival was a first for the village and the comments since have been very favourable with people asking “when are we doing it again”, so thanks to everyone who entered Scarecrows and watch this space! On Friday evening The Cheese and Wine event with choral entertainment by Corby Choristers was enjoyed by all. We also had an art exhibition by local artists ongoing throughout the weekend with people from as far away as Scotland dropping in to look at the art. What amazing talent we have amongst our residents. Of course, there were one or two talking points and some surprises from certain quarters, it all added to the fun. The Fete was a real success too, I have never seen so many people out and about in the village, families were very evident and it was wonderful to see the children enjoying the day with the Parish Church and the Methodist Church organising the event. Scarecrow winners are as follows: Under 12’s , Chloe, Liam, Peter and Kate Halsey; Children’s Groups, Bambino’s Childminding; Adult and Children 12 and over, Diane Lacey and Janet Bell, Adult Groups, the Garden Club. All of the above prizes were sponsored by PAS Ltd., the Happiest Scarecrow in show, won by Martha and Joe Bruce and this was sponsored by DTA Electrical and Mechanical. The Children’s Trail Quest Quiz was won by Elizabeth and Alexander Wand, this prize was sponsored by Liz and Matt Kunen. The name the Scarecrow at The White Lion was won by Maureen Walsh and this was sponsored by The White Lion. A&P Travel and The Stadium Diner (A1 Truck Stop), Rutland County Golf Club and Pamela Jackson all sponsored raffle prizes at the Cheese and Wine Evening. A very big thank you to all our sponsors. DOG FOULING – AGAIN!!

Unfortunately some dog owners think it is OK to let their dogs foul the footways and public spaces not clear up after them! Someone with a small dog is again allowing their animal to foul along the High Street footpath and not clear it up. And who is allowing their dog to foul in the churchyard? This not an isolated incident as many of you can see when walking village footpaths. “Name and Shame” Help catch these people and make an example of them. Offenders can be reported to SKDC Environmental Services on 01476 406080 who will take appropriate action.

KURLINGOn 23rd of June members of the Kurling club together with some guests went on a cruise down the Trent. We met up at the White Lion car park (thank you Madeleine and Dave) and off we set. To hear all the noise you would think we were a crowd of noisy school children who had never been out of the village before! Well some of us don't get out much. Fran was relegated to the back seat but we were still aware of his presence! When we set off the weather was grey and overcast but as we approached Colwick the sun came out. Well you all know that the sun shines on the righteous but I'm not sure if this applies to this lot. We had a short wait, which enabled us to have a drink and stretch our legs. It wasn't long before we were able to board and thankfully we had the top deck to ourselves. This time we went towards Newark and through a couple of locks which was interesting. The lunch was superb with plenty of seconds. The table I was on, was apparently very noisy, but it couldn't have been me as I'm very quiet so it must have been Fran again. You really can't take some people anywhere! It really was a lovely day out and we must thank Barrie and Mick for organising the raffle and for providing the prizes, the proceeds of which went to our Defibrillator fund, and to Rosemary for organising it all.SCARECROW WORKSHOPThe day after the cruise several of us went to the village hall to make scarecrows prior to the scarecrow trail. It was amazing what we did with a bale of hay (thank you Derek and Sandra) some pieces of wood and a pile of unwanted clothing. Stuart and Bill made Daphne. Now I'm a bit puzzled because Daphne was definitely a fellow but that's what Bill called him. Who knows what goes on in Bill's mind but Mo you have our sympathy .Anyway Daphne ended up on Colster Way green but not sure what happened to the lady companion they made, probably still running for the hills. June, Colin and I made a tall imposing scarecrow. He was dressed like a posh country chap in a tweed cap and red cotton trousers.(as Colin commented the trousers would cost about thirty pounds at Downtown) and he stood guard on Back Lane. I just hope no one spotted his boots, they had a heel but we couldn't find any gents boots so had to make do! He was called Albert. Lastly June and I decided we would make a lady scarecrow and I think we did a good job. As she was a bit flat chested I shoved a couple of plant pots up her shirt which was a great improvement. Then June had the brainwave of calling her the Fallen Madonna with the Big well you know how the rest goes. The last I saw of her was a lonely figure sitting on the seat near the Bede Houses staring into the distance. I wonder if she was hoping that Herr Flick would really come and rescue her. If he does can I have my jeans back please, they will be fine for gardening .Many thanks to all who took part,it was a fun afternoon. Special thanks to Viv, our hair and makeup lady.LUNCHEON CLUBBy the time you read this we will have dined at the Tollemache in Buckminster. More about that next time. WOMEN'S INSTITUTESo there you are then, it's dead easy, punch a few details of your parents, grandparents etc. into your computer and it will lead you to your ancestors as far back as you want to go. Eventually you may find a few skeletons in your cupboard or that you are related to H.M. Elizabeth II. Well that is what our guest speaker Paula Ireland found when she delved into her family background. Sixth great great great cousin umpteenth removed no doubt. It was a fascinating talk as Gillian Dexter said in her vote of thanks. It was a day of celebration for the Institute as we welcomed two new members and a couple of visitors too. We also heard that Mary, like Helen the previous month, had got herself on the hospital escape committee and is now at home. We look forward to seeing her at our next meeting. We discussed our plans for the centenary celebrations in September. On WI Day, the 16th September, the anniversary of the first WI at LlanfairPG, Anglesey, we shall be holding a coffee morning at

the White Lion (by kind permission of Dave and Madeleine). There will be a selection of our archive material on show and of course there will be coffee and cake. Money raised will go towards the village defibrillator fund. So we hope that you will come along and support our venture, you don't have to be a woman to come, gentlemen, come and see what your mothers or wives got up to in days gone by. You will be most welcome. It is very quiet on the Federation front, just a visit to R.A.F. Cranwell, but with tight security (more than Buckingham Palace), it's a wonder they don't want to know what we had for breakfast, and only thirty places available, we declined the offer of a tour of their museum etc. Well, it would have been like winning the lottery with seventy Institutes in the Federation having been invited with only thirty winning tickets. We also received an invitation (no limit on numbers) to South Kyme W.I. when they hold a Talk, Tea and Cake afternoon. Dr Mike Rogers, the Collections team leader of Lincolnshire Archives will give an illustrated introduction to the

archives. The winner of the completion of a childhood photograph was yours truly in my pram. The runner-up was one of our new members, Kath on her three-wheeler bike.We were very pleased with the result of our tombola stall at the village garden fete. Thanks to everyone who supported our venture. Our scarecrow entry received good comments, she lost her hat and a boot now and again and we heard that kindly bypassers kept her decent and upright when she fell over. Many thanks to whoever helped.

thOur next meeting is on August 18 in the Sports and Social Club at the usual time of two o'clock. Our speaker is the ever popular Betty Elmer who will help us to spend an afternoon with Queen Victoria. Competition is a Victorian item. There will be the usual cup of tea (or coffee) and of course, cake (Gillian had baked us a lovely date and walnut this last month). So why not join us for a right royal afternoon, see you at two?, you will be most welcome. Dot Williams

COLSTERWORTH & DISTRICT GARDENERS & ALLOTMENT HOLDERS ASSOCIATIONJULY MEETING

On 11th July the club had a stall at the annual Millfield Show where we raised money for the village churches and club funds by selling plants. Thanks go to all who helped by contributing plants and manning the stall. A range of unusual plants had been grown by Gillian, so special thanks are due to her.Our regular monthly meeting was a

visit to eight gardens around Colsterworth and Woolsthorpe. We were all surprised and delighted at the quality and variety of gardening styles on show. Our thanks go to all the gardeners who were kind enough to let us see what their idea of a garden is. I am sure that we all found some inspiration and ideas that we could adapt for our own gardens. The evening ended with tea and cakes at Rachel’s house, ably served by her husband. The

evening had been arranged by Rachel, and is an excellent example of the variety that she has brought to our programme. Many thanks Rachel! In my June report I said that our returning annual show would be in September. WRONG!!!. The show is on August 29th in the village hall, and is to be held in conjunction with our first bulb sale, when Daffodil and Tulip bulbs will be available. Please do come along.

Dear Editor and the readership,

Cold, wet and windy Edinburgh may have been but the Moonwalk on 13 June wasn't supposed to be a 'walk in the park', more of a trek round the city, Arthur's Seat and the sea front, but we did it. This beautiful city and its monuments were lit up pink for the night for the 10,000 of us in our fabulous bras, the sheer enthusiasm and our reasons behind the challenge just kept us going. Thank you first of all for your best wishes, crossed fingers and 'will be thinking about you' before the big night, and since then for the 'how was it?' and, most importantly, the amazing sponsorship. To date we have raised £2283, donations are still coming in and I can't thank you enough as we send it in and it's added to the £4 million raised so far this year by 'Walk the Walk', to then be passed to organisations and used in the battle against breast cancer. Thank you.

Best wishes Shirley [Post Office]

NATURAL HISTORYBULLETIN

Many of the observations in the first two weeks of July have concerned young birds. Moorhens have successfully reared a family on a small pond since 2005, except when the water dried up making the young vulnerable to predators. The return of a pair of adults each year raised the question “How long do birds live?” Any answers we have depend on ringing recoveries and it is only the exceptional lifespans which are recorded. For some seabirds this is astonishing. There was an albatross which lived for 37 years, an arctic tern for 34 years and a frigate for 30 years. However there is a vast difference between exceptions within a species and what is believed to be the average age. There is a correlation between size and life expectancy – larger birds live longer. Songbirds’ average is 1-2 years so that our garden robins, for example, are not the same individuals year after year. The moorhen average is 3 years.

A mallard duck on the River Witham had ten ducklings with her in July. The mallard lays between 8 and 14 eggs but mortality is high and some of the ducklings may have been adopted. The male takes no part in rearing young, simply making himself a nuisance as he tries to mate again with the harassed mother. The young, fortunately, emerge from the eggs with eyes wide open, fluffed up with protective downy feathers and ready to swim and catch small insects emerging from the water’s surface.

The story of a baby swift found on the ground inevitably had a sad ending. A swift from its first flight spends all its active life in the air, its legs not strong enough to stand and its wings not 0special mash of insects, hidden high on a building from which they can launch themselves. The story of the great Spotted Woodpeckers feeding in a Woolsthorpe garden was different. The parents, and then two young became regular visitors. The high winds have blown many nests to the ground. A thrush seen feeding two young on the grass was probably a victim of this. On the

other hand newly fledged sparrows and blackbirds are often seen chasing their worn out parents, begging with mouths which still have traces of a tempting yellow.

To Look For In August There is a wealth of interesting insects about – gaudily coloured caterpillars, grasshoppers big enough to identify (if they will sit still long enough!), dragon and damselflies and strangely shaped galls forming on leaves. Can you record the last date you saw swifts ? Has anyone seen spotted flycatchers (a recording on a phone of a sound like a rusty wheel may have been one). Their acrobatics as they somersault in e air catching insects is very distinctive. I look forward to your records and observations at 61 Woolsthorpe Road,860462,e-mail [email protected]

Big thank you to everyone who helped in any way, on the day or in preparation before the event and especially to those who helped clear up afterwards. The biggest thank you must go to the staff and residents of Millfield for making us so welcome and allowing us the use of their grounds.
