A Study of the Prophets: Men and
Women Who Spoke For God
Beginning on Sunday, September
8th, all adults and teens are welcome to join this year’s study
group on Sundays from 9:30-10:45 in Cote Hall at Our Lady of Good Hope. We have a lively and fun time reading the
Bible and discussing what we have learned, and you can join
us for one session or every week. Our study this year will
begin with the prophets. In the Hebrew scriptures, the prophets were men and women who spoke a message from
God. How do we hear the message of God today? Some
have said the age of the prophets is over. But God is still speaking...come and listen for the voice of God with us. If

Statewide efforts are underway for a “People’s Veto” of recently passed legislation allowing taxpayer-funded abortion (LD 820) and physician-assisted suicide (LD 1313). The People's Veto is the procedure established in the Constitution of Maine by which voters may petition for a referendum on the question of whether legislation passed by the Legis-lature but not yet in effect should take effect. Bishop Robert Deeley strongly supports and encourages efforts for a People’s Veto for these two important issues. We know there is much controversy in our society over the matter of abortion. We also know abortion can cause intense emotional and spiritual pain. At Project Rachel, we do not judge or condemn. Through Project Rachel Ministry, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland strives to offer hope, understanding, and healing to women and men whose lives have been affected by abortion. We do this through developing tools for parish leaders and through offering a Rachel’s Vineyard Retreat Weekend each Fall and Spring.
The next Rachel's Vineyard retreat weekend in Maine is scheduled for October 25-27 in the greater Bangor area. Anyone personally affected by an abortion, including women, men, relatives, and former abortion workers are welcome. Arrival time is 6pm on Friday, and departure time is 1pm after Sunday Mass. The weekend is experien-tial, Scripture-based, and nonjudgmental, with no more than eight participants. The retreat location is not publi-cized to provide a safe place for participants.

The annual Maine Catholic Men’s Conference will be held at St. Maximilian Kolbe Church, located on 150 Black Point Road in Scarborough, on Saturday, October 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The conference will feature a Mass celebrated by Bishop Robert P. Deeley; meaningful times of prayer; and keynote speaker Deacon Ralph Poyo, the founder of New Evangelization Ministries which serves pastors and parish staff around the country, equipping them with training, resources, and strategies for helping parishes become more effective in evangelization and discipleship. Admission is $50 for those age 23 or older and $30 for teens and young adults (ages 16-22). Suzanne Lafreniere, the public policy director for the Diocese of Portland, will be offering free presentations at Maine parishes to discuss Three Beliefs (www.portlanddiocese.org/threebeliefs), a document that offers Maine Catholics valuable assistance, guidance, and information regarding end-of-life issues. The presentations will be held in the coming months in Fort Kent, Caribou, Lincoln, Howland, Ellsworth, Hallowell, Newcastle, Brunswick, Portland, Jackman, and Greenville.
