The St. Brendan the Navigator Parish Endowment is for all parishioners who wish to make a lasting legacy that will benefit the parish and its mission. Anyone can make a gift, in any amount, to the endowment, and anyone can start a new endowment. Neither donations to nor grants from endowments are subject to assessment and donations can be of cash, stock, insurance, property, or a bequest. Your gift will make a difference and assist the parish needs in perpetuity. The Foundation makes distributions annually to the parish as directed, and the funds are used as designated by the endowment. Checks should be made out to the Catholic Foundation of Maine, noting the “St. Brendan the Naviga-tor Parish Endowment.”

For more information about how you can leave a legacy through a gift to the parish endowment, contact Elizabeth Badger, Executive Director, at the Catholic Foundation of Maine, 207-321-7820 or go to www.catholicfoundationmaine.org to find out more.

“If you cannot find Christ in the beggar

at the church door, you will not find Him

in the chalice.”

```
“So let the name of the saints enter our
homes through the naming of our children, to train not only the child but
the father, when he reflects that he is the
father of John or Elijah or James; for, if
the name be given with forethought to
pay honor to those that have departed, and we grasp at our
kinship with the righteous rather than with our forebears, this too
will greatly help us and our children. ```
“No matter how just your words may be, you ruin everything
when you speak with anger.”
```

“Do not be ashamed to enter again into the Church. Be ashamed

when you sin. Do not be ashamed when you repent. Pay attention

to what the devil did to you. These are two things: sin and repentance. Sin is a wound; repentance is a medicine. Just as

there are for the body wounds and medicines, so for the soul are

sins and repentance. However, sin has the shame and repentance

possesses the courage.”

```
“To destroy the fetus ‘is something worse than murder.’ The one
who does this ‘does not take away life that has already been born, but prevents it from being born.’”
```

“The love of husband and wife is the force that welds society

together. Men will take up arms and even sacrifice their lives for

the sake of this love….when harmony prevails, the children are

raised well, the household is kept in order, and neighbors,

friends, and relatives praise the result. Great benefits, both of families and states, are thus produced. When it is otherwise, however,

everything is thrown into confusion and turned upside-down.”

Jesus said: “Come, Follow me,” but how do

we do that here and now?

One way is to gather as small groups of

people to help each other to grow in relationship with

Jesus through Praise, Reflection, Learning, Praying,

Healing, and choosing concrete actions.

There are several different groups that would welcome

you or new groups can be established. If you are inter-

ested, contact the parish office at stbren-

[email protected] with your name and the best

way to reach you.

A gentle reminder that the time before Mass is a time of prayer and spiritual preparation.

Please be considerate of those around

you and refrain from talking and that may cause distraction.

After Mass is a great time for fellowship.

A Study of the Prophets: Men and

Women Who Spoke For God

Beginning on Sunday, September

8th, all adults and teens are welcome to join this year’s study

group on Sundays from 9:30-10:45 in Cote Hall at Our Lady of Good Hope. We have a lively and fun time reading the

Bible and discussing what we have learned, and you can join

us for one session or every week. Our study this year will

begin with the prophets. In the Hebrew scriptures, the prophets were men and women who spoke a message from

God. How do we hear the message of God today? Some

have said the age of the prophets is over. But God is still speaking...come and listen for the voice of God with us. If

you have any questions, contact Mary Smyth at 207-975-3527

or at [email protected].

You can find them in the racks at each church. This ministry tries to be self-sustaining by re-questing a minimum contribution of $3/CD.

In this heart-felt talk given at a Steubenville Youth Conference, David Calavitta reflects upon the all-important and fundamental truth that we were created out of love by a God who continually seeks to draw us into a personal relationship with Him.

THE P:+=LE’S VE*O

Statewide efforts are underway for a “People’s Veto” of recently passed legislation allowing taxpayer-funded abortion (LD 820) and physician-assisted suicide (LD 1313). The People's Veto is the procedure established in the Constitution of Maine by which voters may petition for a referendum on the question of whether legislation passed by the Legis-lature but not yet in effect should take effect. Bishop Robert Deeley strongly supports and encourages efforts for a People’s Veto for these two important issues. Petitions to sign will be available at the Parish Picnic or you can contact Paulette and Russell Spera at 207-596-3886.

OC*,BER 25-27

We know there is much controversy in our society over the matter of abortion. We also know abortion can cause intense emotional and spiritual pain. At Project Rachel, we do not judge or condemn. Through Project Rachel Ministry, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland strives to offer hope, understanding, and healing to women and men whose lives have been affected by abortion. We do this through developing tools for parish leaders and through offering a Rachel’s Vineyard Retreat Weekend each Fall and Spring.

The next Rachel's Vineyard retreat weekend in Maine is scheduled for October 25-27 in the greater Bangor area. Anyone personally affected by an abortion, including women, men, relatives, and former abortion workers are welcome. Arrival time is 6pm on Friday, and departure time is 1pm after Sunday Mass. The weekend is experien-tial, Scripture-based, and nonjudgmental, with no more than eight participants. The retreat location is not publi-cized to provide a safe place for participants.

To talk about attending a retreat, please leave a confidential message by calling (207) 321-7897, emailing [email protected], or filling out a confidential online form at www.portlanddiocese.org/projectrachel or For more information, contact Annette Ri-oux at [email protected] or (207) 774-2420, or Judy Shaw at [email protected].
