Haggai had a spe- cial word from the Lord, “Consider what is hap- pening to you!” Do you ever think that sometimes God is trying to get your attention by the events happening in your life? This was the case in Israel in Haggai’s time. Though they had planted a lot of crops, they weren’t get- ting a good return, which caused there to be less food to go around and less money to live on. Yet they blamed their trou- bles on the economy, on bad weather, on bad luck, and never considered that perhaps God was trying to get their attention. In Haggai’s time, people were neglecting needed repairs on the temple and neglecting worship in general, while living in beautiful houses of their own. They finally caught on that God was speaking to them about Minister’s Corner repairing the temple and showing Him reverence. Then Haggai spoke to them about the need for personal righteousness before God, and he used the idea of “clean” and “unclean.” Let’s put it this way. If a person is healthy (clean), and hangs around a sick person (unclean), can their good health make a sick person feel better? No way. But in the same situation, can a sick person make a healthy person sick? Yes, they sure can. So what was Haggai’s point? If you hold bitterness or hostil- ity or indifference toward God in your heart, you can’t make yourself better by hanging around church or hanging around Chris- tians or even doing good things. Good doesn’t rub off on you. In fact, whatever good you try to do may not be effective. Haggai’s people thought that simply repairing the temple would make them right with God, but it requires personal repen- tance and seeking Him. Today we can receive new life from God by repen- tance and believing in Jesus Christ.
