Why Exhaust System Maintenance Is Important?
The exhaust system is an important part to get a better fuel economy throughout the life of the vehicle.
The exhaust system is used to remove the burned air-fuel mixture from vehicle by reducing the impact of the toxic gasses.
What Does The Exhaust System Do?
The work process of exhaust system starts with exhaust manifold and
ends with muffler.
Exhaust Manifold :-
It connects with the combustion cylinder and takes the burned exhaust gas through the pipes
to the muffler.
The manifold is made off steel, aluminum, stainless steel or cast iron.
The sensor measures the how much oxygen available in fuel and what is the right proportion for a perfect air-fuel mixture.
Oxygen Sensor :-
If the sensor is faulty then it won't measure the exact proportion or add/subtract to fuel and that makes an improper air-fuel
ratio and affects fuel economy.
The converter is placed between the exhaust manifold and the muffler which coverts the harmful carbon monoxide and
hydrocarbons to water vapor and carbon dioxide that is less toxic for environment.
Catalytic converter :-
The muffler helps to quite the combustion explosion noise and absorbs the sound energy while paving a way for the gases
towards the exhaust.
Muffler :-
Most of the exhaust pipes are made of aluminized steel that has better corrosion
resistance than plain steel .
Exhaust pipe
It carries gas from combustion engine to tail pipe and release to the environment.
What Are The Common Exhaust Problems That Can Be Dangerous For Environment?
Rust is the common problem of exhaust system that is caused when the available moisture reacts with iron or the steel and
form iron oxide.
Moisture formulation can be caused by water vapor present in exhaust or from rain drops.
When you take short trips, the engine don't get the optimum heat to vaporize the available moisture in
it. That makes exhaust contaminated and faulty.
To avoid contamination of exhaust system, use stainless steel exhaust pipes or drive long distance once in a while.
The gradual wear and tear and corrosion always limits the life of vehicle by degrading interior and damaging exterior.
If you use the road that uses salt in the winter time then make sure to wash your vehicle weekly to control the corrosion as salt
can speed it up within short time period.
Sometimes the corrosion also creates leaks in the exhaust system. If this problem happens, make sure to check these
symptoms.
:- Exhaust sounds :- Loud clicking or knocking
:- Exhaust smells :- Engine noise
If the system leaks before the catalytic converter, then the toxic fumes can affect the environment's
pollution level as a result.
Helpful Tips to avoid extreme issues in exhaust system.
:- Make sure to change the oxygen sensor every 60,000 miles to maintain a good fuel economy.
:- While replacing muffler or any vehicle parts, always choose OEM parts as that will perform the same with an extended
guarantee.
