Why marry and have a Family?

Most people enter into marriage for wrongful reasons. I have met many

hurting spouses in marriage and this gives me the concern and question: WHY

MARRY and HAVE A FAMILY?

• The primary reason marriage is significant to God is because it is part of His ordained plan to provide the world with a picture of His love for men and women. Marriage becomes the means for married couples to demonstrate their love for God.


Introduction

• Couples rush into marriage without understanding this institution.

• Troubles in families come when people disobey God

• Modern man denies that God is the creator of humanity as well as marriage


• They believe their wisdom is superior to God’s and their alternative family structures and rules will work better than His

• It is common to see men and women living in fornication, single parents by choice or homosexual couples as acceptable and preferable family structures


Purposes of Marriage and Family

1. God created men and women2. God created marriage for men and women

only3. God had divine purposes of marriage4. God intends marriage to last until death


• A. It was God’s idea to create men and women• Genesis 1:26-27• ‘Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image,

according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them’.(NKJV)


• Matthew 19:5-6• and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave

his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.“ (NKJV)


• B. Marriage was created for us to love and be loved

• Ephesians 5:25• ‘Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved

the church and gave Himself for her,’ (NKJV) • Titus 2:4• ‘that they admonish the young women to love their

husbands, to love their children, (NKJV)


• C. Marriage was created for man’s companionship• It is not comfortable being alone. When you are

alone, chances are that you will feel lonely. We are created as social beings and the closest persons are our spouses who come into our lives as companions.

• Genesis 2:18• And the LORD God said, "It is not good that man should

be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.“ (NKJV)


• D. Marriage was created for satisfaction of sexual desires

• Genesis 2:24• Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother

and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. (NKJV)• Leave father and mother, • Cleave, be glued, to wife


• Genesis 4:1• Adam lay with his wife Eve, and she became

pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, "With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man."(NIV)


• 1 Corinthians 7:1-3• ‘Now for the matters you wrote about: It is

good for a man not to marry. But since there is so much immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband. The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband’.(NIV)


• E. To avoid sin sexual activities must be done within marriage

• Hebrews 13:4• Marriage should be honored by all, and

the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral. (NIV)


• F. Marriage was created for procreation.

• We have very many children that are being born outside wed-lock these days because people enter into sexual activities to satisfy their sexual urge.


• Genesis 1:28• God blessed them and said to them, "Be

fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.“ (NIV)


God created marriage that….

1. We can love and be loved2. Man may have a suitable needed

companion in a woman3. Mutual satisfaction of sexual desires4. Homes where children are to be born and

taught the Word of God


• Marriage is intended to last until death• Today, fornication, divorce and remarriage

are common• God’s original intent for marriage was for

couples to stay together until death• We need to emphasize again and again that

marriage is for life.


• Matthew 19:5-6• and said, `For this reason a man will leave his

father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'? So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.“ (NIV)


MARRIAGE AND FAMILY ARE ESSENTIAL FOR:

• 1. Companionship. • The affection, love, and true companionship

which grow out of a oneness of spirit as each partner models Christ's unconditional love

• Amos 3:3• Do two walk together unless they have

agreed to do so? (NIV)


• 2. Enjoyment. • The physical relationship is a reflection of the

loyalty and affection shared among marriage partners who have become "one flesh“

• Hebrews 13:4• Marriage should be honored by all, and the

marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.(NIV)


• 3. Fruitfulness. • The blessing of children in a marriage

relationship allows that relationship to reproduce itself physically. It is an example of the "oneness" that results in a marriage

• 1 Peter 3:7• Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you

live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.(NIV)


• 4. Protection. • The husband protects the wife by laying

down his life for her • Ephesians 5:25• Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ

loved the church and gave himself up for her (NIV)


• The wife is to protect the home• Titus 2:4-5• Then they can train the younger women to

love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God. (NIV)


• The wedding ceremony is not an end in itself. In fact, marriage is not an end in itself.

• Marriage is a means of serving and glorifying God. God planned for marriage to be a blessed state of mutual service to Him."


• The marriage covenant between a man and a woman is a comprehensive and permanent commitment.

• THE COMMITMENT IS NOT OF ENTERING AND LEAVING AS YOU WISH.


• Let us rise up and protect marriage. Let us go back to the basics and ask; Why was marriage instituted? Why do people marry?


• If we are able to understand these basics, we will treat our spouses with all the respect they deserve. Our spouses are so important.
