What I know about farm to school (a fair amount).

HHFKA 2010Section 243: Access to Local Foods

The Secretary shall create a Farm to School Program to

1. Distribute grant funding to improve access to local foods in schools. 

2. Provide training and technical assistance to improve access to local foods in 

schools.

3. Disseminate research and data on existing programs and opportunities for 

expansion.

Growth of Farm to School Legislation

• To date, 46 states have 

proposed or enacted 

legislation supporting farm to 

school. 

• In 2012 and 2013 alone, 20

states passed farm to school 

related legislation, and 17

other states introduced 

legislation. 

… means a program to connect  schools with nearby farms to provide children with locally produced fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products, and other nutritious, locally produced foods in school breakfasts, lunches, and snacks; help children develop healthy eating habits; provide nutritional and agricultural education; and improve farmers’ incomes and direct access to markets.

• Increase by 15% the dollars spent on local food in schools. 

» Engage new schools.

» Deepen the commitment of those already engaged.

• Increase by 5% the number of school‐based Summer Food Service Program sites and by 6% the number of school‐based CACFP sites serving local foods.
