Ellen BrothersRetired President of American Girl
“Leading like a girl means several things to me; being honest and forthright and collaborative. Recognizing
everyone has something to offer in the solution process. Leading like a girl means wanting to succeed and win as
much as the boys (men) so it’s critical to forget stereotypes and lead with your intellect, passions and
desires. Talent will shine through if given enough chances to be seen.”

“I love the theme “Lead Like a Girl!” The most exceptional women leaders and mentors I know have a beautiful blend of intellect & strength and compassion & vulnerability, which leads to trusting relationships. They understand that communication is multi-directional and thus excel at both speaking and listening. In addition, they see their purpose as guiding and developing the next generation of leaders to become their best authentic selves.”

Innovation…10 Lessons Learned
Often too ambiguous or unclear Thrives in a culture of trust People share ideas when they know they will be
valued Give your people permission to fail Gets its power only when it is shared with others Often stopped/halted by the person who initiates
the idea (“check out,” “chicken out,” “stall out”) Collaboration is essential Leverage the collective strengths of a group of
people Celebrate accomplishments along the way Some of the greatest innovations are the result of
people who saw something that could be better, and boldly acted upon it!

Connections: Guiding Principles
Never lead with a personal agenda Give others your full attention Listen intently to others in order to understand Seek first to serve others- Ask “how can I help?” Do not ask to “pick someone’s brain” Ask others for specific assistance Recognize that we all have the ability to help each other
in some way Take someone with you to events Mentoring is a two way street Be open to good going through you, not about you! Always follow up to express gratitude and thanks
![Page 38: WI Women in Healthcare- Lead #LikeAGirl : November 14, 2014](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062516/56649e595503460f94b53296/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)

Katja Kanefoempe UW Madison Nursing student
“I love the topic of your keynote address! I went to an all girls high school and always enjoyed talking about women leadership in my classes. I just watched the Always #LikeAGirl video on YouTube for the first time and absolutely loved it. My favorite part was at the very end when the woman said "Why can't 'run like a girl' also mean win the race?" That comment really drove the point of the video home for me.
As a nursing student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, I am fortunate to be surrounded by powerful women leaders who inspire me to become the best possible nurse and leader that I can be. The women who first come to my mind when I think of a nurse with exceptional leadership are those who don't just speak words in regards to various issues but also take action. During our first-year orientation at the end of August, we wrote our vision and values statement, which really helped me put my nursing education into perspective. We pledged to "empower individuals to become their own agents of change" and to "advocate for cost-conscious, high-quality care.” Someone who inspires, empowers and advocates for others is a true leader to me.”
