As we head into Springin the upper Midwestan annual phenomenonbegins to take placewith those of us whoride. The need to get on our scoots andcatch some wind becomes a drive thatfalls second only to that one that keepspeople populating the planet if you knowwhat I mean (wink wink).

Tech Tip:High Mileage ConcernsJim Jones

This time Im going to talk to you about high

mileage bikes, many of us ride and there are

some of us that ride a lot of miles a year.

Now whether you keep the same bike or trade it off every couple

years. The thing you have to remember is that if youre riding a highmileage bike (50,000 miles or more); when you do your regular

service, make sure you check things out. Not just wear on brakes

bearings and such but check other things out. For example, if your

handlebar isolator mounts are worn out that means they have been

under a lot of strain, for sure if you have ape hangers, so a lot of peo-

ple would change the isolators. But they never give any thought to

the riser bolts, if the riser isolators are worn out you can bet the boltsare fatigued as well and could possibly break causing a much worse

problem then the rubbers. Another example would be tires and bear-

ings, everybody changes their tires and wheel bearings (I hope) but

did you ever think of the axle or the axle nuts or washers? Or even

more important check the swing arm or fork lowers, when changing

your rear tire or checking the bearings. Look at the swingarm, this is

especially true on baggers, dyna and fx type swingarms, you want tolook at where the axle and the axle nut and washer meet the swin-

garm this is a weak point on the swingarm.

What happens especially on high mileage bikes is that from continu-

ous tire changes and service and possible over tightening the metal

begins to wear and give you a place for a possible crack and because

the washer or the axle head covers up the area from sight it usually

goes unnoticed. If you check this and nd a hairline crack, you have

two options. First is to nd a good used swingarm (good luck), second

you can take it to a welding shop or bike shop that does welding and

have them reinforce the swingarm in these areas. The reason I bring

these last two items up is that they just recently were found on a bike

in our shop, not two different bikes but the same bike.

When it was brought in for a broken riser bolt he had a list of things

he wanted xed and checked out. After doing the riser isolators and

bolts and a few other things we went to check the rear wheel bearings,

when taking off the bags to perform the work we discovered that not

only was the swingarm cracked but it was completely broken off and

the only thing holding it in place was the axle nut and washer. Had theaxle come loose the outcome would have been horric. After seeing

this we checked another bagger in the shop and sure enough the swin-

garm was starting to crack on that one as well. Both bikes having over

50,000 miles, so the point Im trying to make here is you could be the

most service oriented person changing oil uids bearings etc. like both

of these customers were, and still u can nd more things if you look.

Remember if the part is worn look at what its attached to or what itsbeing attached with, and this could also need your attention or replace-

ment. Steel and aluminum are not indestructible; it can wear and fail

just as tires bearings and other parts.

Just a thought if youre riding that one owner original bike with high

miles, it might be time to check some of those not so scheduled main-

tenance items, see ya next time Jim Jones

2011 is here and a new riding season is upon us! One of my absolute

riding joys is riding through Sweeping curves. Ahhhhhhhh, theres

nothing like a bit of lean and just cruising through the turns. It is just

raw joy going though curves on a motorcycle. However, if a curve is

misjudged or not negotiated properly the joy is removed and it can be

a down and out raw experience. I would like to provide some thoughtsand guidance here to keep the joy in your curves this new season.

Curves come in all different shapes and sizes. The same holds true

for the roads we ride on. And, if not handled properly trouble can be

gotten into. Some of the things that can cause difculty with curves

are critters coming out on you, or coming into a curve too fast and

braking improperly, or not using proper head and eye technique, or mis-

judging a road condition such as debris, sand or gravel on the surface,

or any combination of these. Lets explore these items and minimize

their ability to inuence our ability to negotiate curves. Typical Curves

are sweepers, turns and switchbacks. They can be long and lean.

They can be short and stout. The long and lean sweepers are fun

because you can glide right through them. The short and stout ones

can be dicey because they require you to properly lean, maneuver andthrottle through the curve.

If there is any doubt regarding speed, debris, sand or critters then slow

down. It is always better to slow down before you get to the curve

rather than in the curve. Once you are in the curve roll on the throttle

and go through the curve. This loads the suspension and allows you to

lean the motorcycle into the curve. If you have to brake while in the

curve, straighten the motorcycle rst and then apply braking. Whenyou apply brakes while in the curve the motorcycle automatically works

to straighten upright and you lose your ability to lean and negotiate the

turn.

When you are moving at speed greater than roughly 15mph you push

in the direction you want to go. If you want to go to the left you push

on the left handlebar. If you want to go to the right you push on the

right handlebar. When you push to the left or

right it automatically causes the motorcycle to

lean in that direction and consequently go in

that direction. Your motorcycles lean limit is

pretty low. Most folks are sketchy about scrap-

ing the pegs. If your pegs or boards scrape itsok, dont panic, keep pressing on your bar, ease

through and continue on.

Eye and head position are important. Your mo-

torcycle always goes where you look. Look through the curve and drive

through it. I tend to look as far through the curve as I can and keep

my eys and head level with the horizon. I dont xate on lines and

objects. If you xate on an object or line youll drive right to it. There-

fore, try not to xate on cars, lines or road shoulders.

I hope this segment will bring a bit more joy in safely navigating all

those luscious and gracious curves we see out on our rides.

Even before the show became popular pickers were abundant,they just did not have such a glorious title. Whatever the intent, cobweb laced cycles are being dragged out of the back shed, dug from un-der tons of paper in the garage and rescued from the entwining grip ofa buckthorn that has engulfed a foot rest and managed to work its waythru the frame, (remember the saw?).

After you have managed to get it home, now the sixty four thou-

sand dollar question hits the fan, (after you wife gets done with youfor dragging home a collectable, if only she shared your vision), whatdoes it need and where do I get it. Before you do anything to your newnd, know what your goal is: 10/10 restoration, something to ride forthe kid, Rat bike to quench the midlife, or just something to work on toget out of the house. Now set it up for a photo shoot, get it well lit andtake pictures of everything, since we are not supporting our local Foto-

mat anymore there is no reason to be stingy, take pictures of every itemon the cycle while it is still on.

Now the fun, the dissection, as you take each piece off, take apicture of it on the cycle then take pictures of it after it is off, makingsure to capture any unique features. For the parts you plan on replac-ing print a picture and write any factory part numbers and dimensions.Even if you are making a Rat, it is good to know what you are replacing.

With the growth of the web, nding parts has become mucheasier, but as always buyer beware, if you are buying on an auction sitemake sure to ask plenty of questions especially if the seller has only acouple of feedbacks, ask for dimensions and additional pictures to verifyit is a good part and what you need. If they are not taking care of youup front they are not going to help you once the honeymoon is over

and they have your extra beer money.At Milwaukee Cycle the bulk of the business is used metric parts

(Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha), there are 23,000 sq. ft. of partsfrom the 60s to present. All of the parts are labeled and inventoriedbut there are also a couple hundred standing donor cycles. browse. It makes everyoneslife a little easier when the partsthat someone is trying to replaceare brought in (although leavemotors outside). You can lay theparts next to each other to verifythe match and with gas pricesat close to $4 per gallon no onewants an extra trip.

What do helmet laws and insurance haveto do with each other? Interestingly morethan one might suspect. There is an annual

attempt to repeal mandatory helmet lawsfrom a number of states, notably Michigan. Asseen in other states attempting such legisla-

tion, a condition was added to the bill language calling for additionalmedical pay coverage in the amount of $20,000. ABATE of Michi-gan has been ghting the mandate since its inception and ABATEmember Mike Poage points out that bikers should already have the$20,000 medical coverage under the states insurance plan. Michi-gan has no-fault Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance. Mo-torcyclists are entitled to PIP even though they are not required tocarry PIP insurance.

One of the biggest problems in securing helmet law repeals isthe argument that bikers sustain serious injuries that arent coveredby minimum limits of insurance, thus the need for add on medi-cal coverage. In Michigan, that might not be the case. The big-ger problem is that while helmet law proponents call for bikers tocarry more medical coverage, these same people do not call for an

increase in minimum insurance coverage. Michigan, for instance,has a $20/40/10 plan, which is woefully inadequate. In Wisconsin,an insurance law change in 2009 increased Wisconsins minimumsto $50/100/100 and the ability to stack multiple policies. That wasgreat, except in the wisdom of a new administration, the law is on afast track to go back to the inadequate minimums of $25/50/10.

Illinois was also considering an increase in minimum coverageof insurance, recognizing that the current limits did not cover any

substantial injuries. If bikers were at fault the majority of the time inaccidents, it might lend to the argument that they should carry moremedical insurance. The opposite is true in that most times in multi-ple vehicle crashes, its the other vehicle that caused the crash. Yetthere is a trend to somehow hold the victim accountable by requir-ing more insurance and sometimes mandatory rider training to ridehelmet free. Some states are not buying into this shallow thinking.The State of Washington is considering HB1984, which completelyremoves all language referring to mandatory use of motorcycle

helmets, with no additional provisions. Its what motorcycle rightsactivists call a clean bill.

In this writers opinion, mandatory minimum levels of insurancehave to increase to at least catch up with the ination rates. Manyof these limits were set back in the 1980s or earlier. To maintaininadequate limits of insurance while claiming victims of crashes arebecoming burdens to society is pure hypocrisy. To insist riders mustcarry additional personal medical coverage in order to ride without a

helmet is despotic.

Here in Illinois we have won so many battles against government interferencein our rights to ride free that most bikers gure why get involved! or hey, webe okay!. Well guess what sweetpea we aint! NHSTB has now release theTen Top Most Wanted pamphlet to all the States including our supposedly failsafe state and Motorcycles are in this list! This government sponsored programis insisting that all motorcyclists wear helmets and full safety gear! I am sureyou have all heard that Motorcycle Only Mandatory Safety Checks are in fullswing and coming to a road near you! You can be stopped, checked, searchedand this is all under the cover of education! They are also dangling the carrotof cash to itty bitty towns we all love to ride through to conduct these invasivesearches and ya know what? They are biting! Hey I dont blame them! If I

had Uncle Sam giving me wellneeded cash to my town of 200just to stop a few bikers? Ya seethe picture Spike?

Well I want motorcycle educa-tion to remain back in the handsof A.B.A.T.E. and not used asa tool from some non-ridingbureaucrats dipping their greasy

little hands into my rights to rideas I want to! I want to send amessage to the NHSTB boysthat we are not playing into theirpoker hand of their own personalagendas! Like many of you, I have an interesting com-mute to work every morning. I travel frommy home in central Lake County in Illinois tomy ofce about 15 miles from my home. Theroad I travel is one of favorites in the county.

Slightly hilly, curvy and with a speed limit that makes the trip enjoyableeven when Im not on my Ducati or any number of other bikes at mydisposal.

Something Ive noticed since moving to this area is that other motor-ists are too busy with other things in their vehicles to enjoy this route ortheir own commute to where ever it is that their travels are taking them.Often times during what should be the morning rush, theyre fussingwith electric shavers, applying makeup, checking messages or simplyplaying with their personal electronic devices to take in the beauty ofthis road and make the most of this moment in driving pleasure. Havewe lost touch with immersing ourselves in what cars and bikes bring out

emotionally when we get behind the wheel or throw a leg over a saddle?From my experience I believe we have. Its become a chore more thana passion.

The speed limit in this area is posted as 50 miles per hour, yet manytimes Im trapped behind a column where the front car is driving at 10miles per hour below that limit even when the road is dry and the morn-ing sky is crisp, sunny and beautiful. In this two lane roadway, othermotorists cant even manage to keep their vehicle between the linesalthough theyre traveling at much less than the limit, because theyredistracted by doing something other than focusing on driving. Arrggh-hh! Comon now people, I nd myself screaming inside my helmet asI observe bad behavior day after day from a wide range of drivers frommany age groups and both genders as I try to enjoy this short jump tomy daily druthers at my job. What is the point of this rant? Well on theweekends its not a lot different except that I get the joy of seeing manygroups of riders out with their buddies and signicant others enjoyingthis stretch of road in the same way I do, and as much as seeing theirrush of riding being impeded by the mindless drones.

After all the sensation of ying just above the pavement is what makesme love riding and those that chose to limit that joy that comes in ridingat the posted speed limit (and perhaps occasionally above it) is whatbrings many of us to riding in the rst place. Im not suggesting that wedo anything illegal, but what the @$%*! But I digress.

How many of you have lost a riding buddy to love? I can recall ona quick audit that I have lost too many to be happy about. Weve allbeen there, riding on the weekend, was the rst thing we thought ofas we punched the clock on Friday to once again enjoy our weeklytwo day holiday. Ringing up all the guys to plan a trip toanywhereour collective noses were pointing. Sharing this time was the thingthat made the prior ve days tolerable. Getting out on the road withthese guys was like the time we were kids getting everybody from theneighborhood out for a pick-up game of football or baseball exceptthat weve exchanged those sporting goods for leathers, helmets, andboots.

Then out of the blue, love steps in the way. The kind of love that doesnot share our passion of riding. The kind of love that convinces us that

riding is a dangerous pursuit and it would be wiser not to ride, than toget out and y by the seat of your pants. The kind of love that takesthat buddy away from us and what we thought was his innite lovefor being with us and watching the odometer count up higher num-bers with every passing minute. The kind of love that shouts, it wouldmuch safer to go to Bed, Bath and Beyond to shop for towels. Arrg-ghhh! Comon now people!!! Are you kidding me? I too was one ofthese folks. Until I saw the errors of my ways and came back to what I

knew was my passion. Ive never looked back. Thanks to riding, Ivehad the pleasure to meet and become friends with folks that I wouldnot have were I not part of this community. Not had adventures,good and bad, that we look back on and laugh about today. Not seenplaces from the saddle that cant be mimicked behind a steering wheelor postcard.

Why not work to convince the lovesof our lives to share in this joy and if

not in the saddle with us, on their ownrides. Im convinced that once theyvehad a chance to see what we see andfeel what we feel, they too will becomeintoxicated by its ability to make youfeel like nothing else does. Im workingon my wife. Shes reluctant, but whenI point out how many other ladies ride

with great pleasure and little danger, it makes her do a double takeand consider perhaps its the correct choice if she wants to be with meand our friends on certain weekends.

It takes the right kind of bike, but there is something out there foreverybody and their individual tastes. Riding is life, and life is not al-ways meant to be taken in, by small sips from it vessel. Sometimes itsgood to take it in with big sloppy gulps. This is what riding means to

many of us and I welcome it with a healthy dose. But I digress
