Working with Wikispaces

1. Make sure that you fol low the link in the e-mail and sign up for a Wikispaces

account. Through the educator accounts (both K12 and higher ed), there is a way toset up accounts for your students, but I’d prefer to give you the chance to set upyour account yourself.

2. If Wikispaces doesn’t take you there automatically, at

http://ed628scavhunt.wikispaces.com/ 3. A wiki is a shortened version of the Polynesian term for “quick” (the correct term is

, said quickly) and allows collaborators to fairly rapidly build a websitetogether. But a wiki is not structured on , but on . So the first thing youneed to do is .

4. Click on the [EDIT] button:

5. The Edit pane will appear over the wiki page. It is set up to work similarly to a word

processor like Microsoft Word wi th a toolbar at the top of the pane. Click at the endof the “About ED628” bullet poin t and press the [ENTER] key on the keyboard. This

wil l insert a new bullet point in the list. Then, type in the name of your exhibit nextto the new bullet poin t . I will be using the

“About ED628” page as the example, but think of how these instructions apply to

your exhibit page.

11. This wil l again bring up the Editing Pane, but for new page. You can start

putt ing some information onto your page, and use the toolbar options to help you.The text options allow you to select bold and italics, as well as different colored text. However, for most uses, you should be using the Style Selector. The [File] button ishow you upload your Flickr photos.

12. The general layout of the page should be as follows:

13. Set the style of the dif ferent sections by clicking on the Style Selector. The ones youshould be using are Heading 1 (for the Exhibit Title), Heading 2 (for each Photo Title),and Normal (for everyth ing else). You can change the style in two ways: type first, highlight the text you want to set the style for, and then select the style you want.

Or you can select the style first and then type. With the Heading styles, the editorreverts to Normal after you press [Enter] on your keyboard.

14. To insert a photo, cl ick on the [File] button. This brings up the “File” box. Click onthe [+ Upload Files] button. Find the photo you are looking for, and then click on[Open] or [OK] or whatever the appropriate button is.

15. Once the image has been added to the File Library, click on the photo itself to insert

it on the page.16. You will be brought back to the Edit Pane with a grayish-blue options box. You canresize the photo either by clicking on the [- ] and [+] buttons or by dragging theboxes in the corners of the photo (the “Original” link will set it back to its originalsize). Make sure you click on

“Add Link” so that clicking on the photo brings you to the Flickr photo page.

17. Repeat so that you have between 3 and 5 photos in your exhibit. Wikispaces willautomatically save every couple of seconds, but when you are done with your page,

you can click on the [Save] button, bringing you back to your exhibit page. You canalways edit it by clicking on the [EDIT] pencil but ton. But if you’re done, you’re done, and that’s that! Wikiwiki!
