Holiday greetings from Michael I. Levine, National President

Chanukah is the story of the triumph of light over darkness, of loveover hate.

Each year we forge a new link in our chain of existence that dates backmany thousands of years. Just as we know that a chain is only asstrong as its weakest link, we also know that each one of us isreinforcing this link, this year, this day, this moment and every moment

of our life, through our support of each other.

The activities of Magen David Adom help to forge an unbreakable link for our time, bysaving lives and mitigating the suffering of human beings in Israel and around the world.Truly, a gift of life and hope. Yet hope alone is not enough. Nothing can happen withoutthe generosity of you, our donors.

Our skilled and dedicated team across Canada will continue to encourage and motivateyou into action, the action of giving -- supplying essential medical equipment and medicalsupplies, ambulances, the finest pre-hospital medical services in the world, and bloodfor the entire State of Israel.

Israel cannot survive without Magen David Adom. Magen David Adom cannot survivewithout you.

Thank you, Canada, for 40 years of love and support of Magen David Adom.

Michael I. Levine, National President

THE STATE OF ISRAEL DEPENDS ON MAGEN DAVID ADOM. MAGEN DAVID ADOM DEPENDS ON YOU.

The afternoon session in-cluded the report from MayerDiamond, Chairman of the2016 Nominating Committee,as well as chapter reports.

All agreed that Canadian Magen David Adom is a“brand” that we should beproud of and that we shoulddo everything we can to enhance the name. CMDA National Board members, guests and staff enjoy the 2016 Annual General Meeting.

In 2011, Dr. Stephen Greenberggenerously donated a MICU inmemory of his parents, Harry andSonia Greenberg z”l. Recently, Dr.Greenberg contacted the Nationaloffice in order to donate anemergency medical scooter in

honour of his brother, Jack’s 65thbirthday.

Dr. Greenberg explained that hewould be visiting Israel during theHigh Holidays and would like tohave the dedication take place on

a suitable date during that period. He also requested a re-dedicationof the MICU he had previouslydonated.

Special thanks to Ilan Klein, MDA’sDeputy Director of Fundraising

and the Canada Deskrepresentative, who went over andabove the call of duty to make surethat this would happen. Thededications took place on October9th, at the Tel Aviv MDA Station.

An Event Worth Remembering

Eva was born in January 1916 in Bu-dapest, Hungary to a cultured, upperclass family. Prior to the Holocaust, while she was only in her twenties, herfather passed away, and later hermother was killed in the Holocaust.

When the Germans came into her city,Eva was able to pass as a young Chris-tian village girl. A family that knew shewas Jewish took her in as a house-keeper. One day, an SS officershowed up and asked Eva to cook achicken that he had brought. He satin the kitchen and watched as she pre-pared it. After he ate his meal, the of-ficer stood up, cllcked his heels andsaid to her, " I heard there was a Jewishmaid in this house, but you did notmake the chicken in the way of theJews. Good day, Fraulein, and becareful." Coming from a home withmaids and a cook, Eva had neverlearned to cook nor did she spend

any time just sitting and watching inthe kitchen. She left with her suitcasethat same night.

After the war, Eva met Ernest Braunwhose wife and son had been killedin the Holocaust. While Eva Braun’sname is well known as Hilter’s mistress who was personally respon-sible for the murder of more than6,000 Jews, Eva Braun and her hus-band, Ernest, proudly dedicated thenext 60 years to endless Jewishcauses, seeing it as their personal mission to save and protect as manyJewish lives as possible.

When Eva and Ernest Braun came toToronto, though not truly Eva’s niece,Sandy Galet, who originally grew upin Montreal, visited often and becamevery close with the family. “For Evaand Ernest, I represented their dreamof a new generation of Jewish chil-

dren. When they hugged me, I still remember a feeling of warmthand sunshlne surrounding me,” com-mented Sandy

After Eva’s death, the funeral homepublished the obituary, but took it offthe website as some people calledand complained, thinking that a pub-lished announcement of the death ofEva Braun was a hoax. “When weheard about it, we called and ex-plained the situation,” said Sandy. Thefuneral home immediately put the an-nouncement back.

Sandy Galet, a dedicated supporter ofMagen David Adom and its humani-tarian cause, thought it would be most

fitting to donate a life-saving ambu-lance in Eva Braun’s memory to serveas a legacy to this amazing woman ofwiping out evil and turning a hatedname into a means through whichJewish lives will continue to be saved. In this way, the memory of those who perished can live again in the landof Israel.

This ambulance, has now found a per-manent home in Kiryat Malachi, a cityin the Southern district of Israel whichhas had its share of hardships. “Themost important part of this great Mitzvah” says Sandy, “is that Aunt Evacontinues to live out her mission ofsaving lives. She would have beenjustly proud.”

Having already donated an ambulance in memory of her husband,Max, and knowing how important emergency medical scootersare in saving lives, Roslyn Margles chose to honor his memory onthe occasion of his yahrzeit by donating a scooter in his memory.Normally the scooters are made in Italy and shipped directly toIsrael. However, Mrs. Margles was determined to have adedication in Montreal and, therefore, efforts were made to locateand short term lease a similar three-wheeled scooter from anobliging Montreal dealer. With family and friends in attendance,Mrs. Margles hosted a brunch and thanked CMDA staff for goingout of their way to make this possible. The actual scooter is nowin service in Israel. Thank you, Mrs. Margles, for your support.

A Very Special Dedication

The timing was perfect. In November, Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre, together with his Toronto counterpart, Mayor John Tory, led an economictrade mission to Israel and the West Bank which coincided with MagenDavid Adom’s annual International Conference (IMDAC).

Mayor Coderre and his Special Advisor, Howard Liebman, took time fromtheir busy schedule to meet with members of Magen David Adom andview the ambulance donated by Judith and Harry Rossdeutscher andFagey and Simon Rossdeutscher in memory of Rabbi Sidney Shoham.

CMDA’S Young Leadership Team is a passionate group of youngprofessionals dedicated to increasing awareness and raising funds forMagen David Adom Israel.

The second networking event, a 5 à 7, was held recently. Hosted by SamMoyal, Young Leadership Chairman, and Daniel Amzallag, CMDA’sNational Volunteer and Media Coordinator, the evening attracted morethan 60 young professionals. “We are very excited with the turnout,” saidSam, “and we are looking forward to having more programs gearedtowards this group.”
