From the earliest of times we have used symbols, signs and artwork to express our thoughts and emotions.

Divine Light Paschal Candles give glory to God as they enhance your sanctuary, prompting a richer prayer experience through the beautiful symbolism of their full-color designs.

Each tall white paschal candle, representing Christs steadfast presence in our midst, is lit each Sunday throughout the Easter season beginning on Easter Sunday, and often until Ascension Day. Also used for baptisms and funerals, the paschal candle reminds us of Christs presence in birth and in death.

The central cross on all our Divine Light designs identifies it as the Christ candle, and its flame burns despite the death Christ endured.

The Greek letters Alpha and Omega, signify that the Word of God is present from creation until the end of time.

We include the current year to signify that God is present among those gathered here and now around the candle.

Each Divine Light Paschal Candle is handcrafted with full-color appliqus and painted raised wax applied by skilled Will & Baumer artisans.

The candle core is 51% beeswax, blended in our facility and combined with a lead-free cotton fiber wick to ensure a long lasting, smoke-free burn.

A Will & Baumer Tradition Since 1855

Pure beeswax candles have been used for light and to illuminate religious celebrations for more than 5,000 years, yet little is known about their origin. While we have no definitive date for the development of the first candle, we do know that candles were developed independently in many countries. Accounts of candle use date back to ancient times, with Biblical references as early as the 10th century BC.

In the early years, when Christians were persecuted, beeswax candles were used in hushed ceremonies of small gatherings at night or in the catacombs surrounding Rome. Our church fathers proclaimed pure wax extracted from virgin bees as a symbol of the pure flesh of Christ received from His Virgin Mother. They taught us that the wick signified the soul of Christ, and the flame represented His divinity which absorbs and dominates both. In a troubling time for new Christians, candles were both a light source and a symbol of ones faith.

When Christianity became widespread and Basilicas and Cathedrals were built all across Europe, the faithful embraced pure beeswax candles to enhance their majestic sanctuaries. Unlike tallow candles, beeswax produced long-burning and smoke-free candles which gave off a pleasant odor and did not stain the glass, ceilings and painted works of art in the magnificent churches of the time.

Over the centuries, the church, in its infinite wisdom, set forth canon law stating that its candles must be maxima parte of beeswax to be in keeping with the pure flesh of Christ and to enrich the essence of the Holy Sacrifice of The Mass.

In keeping with our blessed traditions, in 1855 Will & Baumer began blending European pure beeswax and perfected candle processes that are still used to this day. These wax formulations represent the very best in church candle making and ensure the quality that our church fathers wanted for their liturgies centuries ago.

byzantiumByzantium Natural Color Beeswax from the Early Days of ChristianityOn the night of October 27th, 312 AD, before the historic battle of the Milvian Bridge, Jesus Christ appeared to the pagan emperor Constantine in a dream in which He instructed Constantine to paint a Christian cross on the battle standards of his army. Included with the banner were the words: In Hoc Signo Vinces, In this sign thou shalt conquer, and armed with this holy power, Constantine crushed his enemy and the Christian world was never the same.

With Constantines victory and conversion to Christianity, he became the sole ruler of the Roman Empire and began to advance the Christian cause. New churches were built in Rome and around the empire. When the Roman capital was moved to the city of Byzantium, Constantine built new churches there as well.

Beeswax candles were introduced into the liturgy in Byzantium and these pure candles, which were the symbol of the pure Christ, were unbleached and in their natural color. As Christians embarked on pilgrimages to the Eastern provinces, they brought their liturgies, their rituals, their incense and, of course, their pure beeswax candles.

This style of follower will perform better than other styles on the market. They are not as heavy as some and have a larger liquid cup area for optimal candle performance. Each follower is finished in high polish brass, then lacquer-coated, providing many years of service.
