A competitive edge through technologyWilliams 3D is one of Australia’s leading providers of additive manufacturing services. We help our clients realise profit and growth by giving them a competitive edge through the use of technology.

Australian businesses are facing increasing competition from offshore providers. 3D technology frees them up to imagine and produce a customised product quickly and economically.

Our rapid prototyping and digital manufacturing services use the most innovative manufacturing technology seen in generations – the latest 3D scanning and additive manufacturing machines. This means we can create high quality models and working parts from a large selection of thermoplastic materials.

3D technology – a game changerThe Williams 3D suite of services enable us to:

Produce highly complex geometries that are impossible to make with traditional manufacturing processes.

Consolidate formerly separate parts. This reduces manufacturing, assembly and inspection costs.

Make it cost effective to bring some manufacturing back to Australia and reduce outsourcing.

3D technology has completely changed the game in manufacturing. This means improved product design, faster times to market and increased profits due to lower manufacturing costs.

If you can imagine it... chances are we can create it

Knowledge is power in the new industrial revolution.

Williams 3D technology uses a digital modelling process to create solid objects in almost any shape imaginable. Traditional manufacturing methods will strip down materials to create a product. A 3D printer works differently, creating a shape by building up successive layers of materials. We call this process ‘additive manufacturing’.

3D modelling and printing in practiceThrough computer-aided design (CAD) we create a virtual model of your product, which is ‘sliced’ into horizontal cross-sections using specialised software. From there our machines use ‘Fused Deposition Modelling’ (FDM) to dispense production-grade thermoplastic materials to build both the part and a disposable support structure. A computer-controlled nozzle lays down the molten plastic layer by layer until it perfectly matches your original design.

The application of 3D technology is limited only by imagination and is best suited to projects with relatively low volumes, short production runs and high part complexity.

This innovative new technology will allow you to experience:

Fast, cost-effective concept modelling. Create a buzz in the market with a 3D model – saving the time and cost of traditional manufacturing.

Earlier design testing. Develop an inexpensive, tough 3D model so you can catch problems and make adjustments early in the design phase.

Cost savings on parts. Create cost-effective low-volume parts tough enough to be integrated into the final product.

On-the-spot tool development. Produce jigs, fixtures, tooling masters and production tooling in just hours.

The future of additive manufacturing defies imaginationAdditive manufacturing is an industry game-changer when it comes to design freedom and fast turnaround of prototypes and products.

Until now, prototypes with challenging geometries would take weeks to develop. With additive manufacturing, the same product can be created in a matter of hours. Design changes are also easy to make, through a simple tweak to a computer file.

Designers are free to focus on creating lighter weight structures to boost efficiency and reduce emissions as there’s no need for expensive tooling during the design process.

Who is using this technology?Industries already taking advantage of 3D modelling and printing technology include:

Architecture

Automotive

Consumer products

Commercial products

Education

Medical

Freedom of design with fast turnaround

Lower costs, better outcomes? Hard to argue with that.

A simple, secure processStarting a 3D project is simple. Once you have a drawing, we upload the file to a secure Williams 3D environment, do some pre-processing to define the build parameters and provide an estimate. Next, we produce your item in the additive manufacturing machine, conduct a thorough inspection process and deliver it to your door.

It’s important to note that we take IP protection seriously. From design registration, copyright, trademarks, patents and confidentiality, every step in our process ensures your rights are secured in this emerging and complex field of R&D manufacturing.

How does the digital magic happen? The Williams 3D ‘Fused Deposition Modelling’ (FDM) printers build rigid plastic objects that can be used for functional testing with exposure to water, chemicals and extreme temperatures.

This FDM process starts with a 3D CAD model sliced into thin cross sections. The 3D printer then lays down thin layers of thermoplastic material. After covering the whole cross section, the process repeats until the full 3D part is formed.

Turn a concept into 3D reality

Right first time, for a fraction of the cost, additive manufactured objects are fit for purpose and ready in hours.

Williams 3D presents the future of manufacturing

Design beyond imagination…that is the future of manufacturing with 3D technology? Williams 3D offers a range of rapid prototyping and digital manufacturing services to help you gain the competitive edge with this innovative new technology.

3D scanningWith manufacturing and engineered components becoming increasingly complex, scanning components is the fastest and most accurate way to convert them to CAD files for replicating, modifying, inspecting or reverse engineering.

Williams 3D operates the most sophisticated and accurate 3D scanner on the market – the CreaForm EXAscan. This handheld scanner allows total freedom of movement, increasing the reliability, speed and versatility of the measurement process.

3D designNo two designs are the same and at Williams 3D, every job is treated equally. Our CAD engineers collaborate with clients to find the perfect balance between technical specifications and needs on each project. We use SolidWorks and PTC Creo to achieve faster design times, flexibility and responsiveness to change.

Concept 3D modelsEvaluate and optimise product design without the time and cost of traditional manufacturing and create a buzz in the market in a fraction of the time.

Functional 3D prototypesGet your product right from the start. Functional 3D prototyping allows you to create inexpensive working models of your product quickly and accurately, giving you the opportunity to test form, fit and function before going into mass production.

End-use partsCreate low volume parts tough enough for integration into the final product without the expense of machining or tooling.

Manufacturing toolsProduce jigs, fixtures, tooling masters and production tooling in just hours. Rather than investing in heavy, expensive jigs and fixtures that require assembly, additive manufacturing can make them in one piece.

Surface finishingFinish your product in a smoothing station – a semi-automated process that improves the surface finish of parts to near injection-moulded quality without the labour and cost associated with traditional manufacturing.

Lower costs, better outcomesWhether you want to ramp-up production while waiting for tooling, do a low volume or special edition production run, manufacture replacements parts or produce jigs and fixtures, additive manufacturing offers an opportunity to increase innovation and profits.

Your designers will be free to explore their creativity rather than taking the traditional approach of designing purely for manufacturability.

Freedom to explore creativity

First movers have the advantage. Additive manufacturing makes you one of them.

The applications of additive manufacturing are limited only by your imagination. Here are some popular ways the technology is already being used:

Showcasing new product designs in 3D while still in development.

Sending a physical 3D printed part to a supplier while requesting quotes.

Manufacturing parts in small quantities where tooling or production costs are not justified.

Giving designers and toolmakers a view of potential problems before investing in tooling.

Producing an architectural model of a new home to show how the design will look in real life.

Developing tooling inserts for plastic injection moulding.
