The March general meeting had much discussion over the aquatic weed eradication programs and the tunnels. In addition the company that has the contract to build the tunnels have purchased 4 islands in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, which will be used to store all the equipment needed to build these tunnels. PLEASE copy and paste the following URL and sign the petition to stop the sale of these islands. These tunnels will not fix the Southern CA water problems. We need enough signatures by May 1, so this deal will not go through.https://www.change.org/p/most-important-action-you-can-take-stop-met-s-water-land-grab-in-the-deltaThis month John & I

took a cruise on a 270 ft yacht, the Crystal Esprit. Their parent company owned this yacht and when Crystal took it over, they remodeled it with 31 suites. There was 91 crew and on our particular cruise, there was only 28 guests! Talk about being pampered…The small yacht allowed us to cruise within the small country of the Seychelles Islands. Only 5 of the 115 islands are inhabited, and we cruised to 10 of the islands. What we really enjoyed was that not all the cruising was done at night, so we were able to enjoy the Indian Ocean and all the unspoiled sugar-white beaches, lush emerald mountains, protected wildlife reserves and crystalline waters home to some of the world’s most dynamic coral reefs. The yacht had a crew that just handled the 4 zodiacs that took us to shore. We also had access to kayaks, jet skis and a 3 man submersible. Additionally, Esprit’s high–performance boat, was a 32FT speedboat. And the great thing was everything was included, from snorkeling

gear to top shelf martinis! One of my shore excursions took me to Vallée de Mai Forest Preserve. We followed the trails through the heart of this unique palm forest. The Seychelles Island Foundation ensures that this World Heritage Site is well-managed and protected. I never knew there were so many varieties of Palm Trees. And the famous Coco de Mer, which I’m holding below, is a protected seed and 75% of these are sold in the Far East for Eastern medicine. Like many other all-inclusive cruises, Crystal Esprit had dining 24/7; but Chef Adam was superb! One evening, the crew, using the zodiacs, brought appetizers and cocktails to one of the white sand beaches. John & I and all the guests floated in the water as the crew waded out into the water with appetizers and cocktails. What a way to relax and enjoy our new found friends. The European Vacation at Willow Berm Marina was everything you could hope for. Good food, good times and a beautiful wait staff pouring wine Saturday night for the competitive Wine tasting. Every time we visit Willow Berm, I am always amazed at how fast the current flows thorough there and this year there was a ton of hyacinth and debris stacked up as well. It made me think again about safety on and around fast moving water.

First off we should all be wearing one of the many PFD’s available to us when arriving or leaving a dock, raft up or any place where your possibility increases of

falling in. If you are the bow bunny, fender fiend, or line loopier, think of the captain if you fell in, they will know you have on a safety PFD and this will give them a few extra minutes to get to you safely, or throw you a swim ring. If you do fall in - don’t panic! Try and remain as calm as possible. This could mean life or death. A typical river drowning is caused by the universal instinct for the person to try and swim back to the original point where they fell in. Most often this is a struggle against the current and you will sink vertically into the water and drown. What you need to do is perform the self rescue. Instead of fighting the river current, turn onto your back, with your buttocks down and feet up, knees bent and arms out. Point your feet downstream or in the direction you are being pulled. As you drift, you can “Ferry”, which means you can push your body

one direction or another by simply putting one arm back and one arm forward as you float. The arm you put back points in the direction you want to go. As you are on your back you can also yell, scream and or whistle for help. This may be an activity we should practice one cruise out and have dinghies at the ready to pull us to safety. Just knowing how this feels and how to handle our bodies may save us one day. I hope we never encounter anything so scary and dangerous as a man/woman overboard, but being prepared is one of the key to Safety.

Cheers,

Safety monitor Shelia

March cruise was awesome. Thank you Jeanie and Doug, I think Jeanie has an arrangement with the man upstairs. The weather could not have been better. The food on Friday was excellent. What I learned on Saturday was that I cannot pick international wines.

A little history on Willow Berm: In 1931 the Korth family purchased land at the confl uence of the San Joaquin and Mokelumne Rivers at the very Southern tip of Sacramento County. They originally planned to be farmers and grow asparagus on the property. In 1937, the Korth’s began

renting out rowboats for a dollar a day. The following summer in 1938, Albine Korth decided to start building his own rowboats and his rental fl eet began to grow. After World War II the Korths purchased more boats at US Government surplus auctions, and so Korth’s Pirate’s Lair as a Delta destination was beginning. During the 1940’s a snack bar was opened which evolved into the current restaurant at Korth’s. Boat sheds were constructed and the harbor was dredged and breakwater built in the 1960’s and Korth’s evolved into the fi ne marina that it remains today. These days the third generation of the Korth family operates three of the best marinas in the Delta with Korth’s Pirate’s Lair, Oxbow Marina, and Willow Berm Marina. Willow Berm Marina was built in the ‘60s and was purchased

by the current owners in 2001. Since that time, many improvements have been made in and around the marina to make it what it is today, the Delta’s Premier Yacht Harbor.

Willow Berm boasts nearly 350 covered and open slips ranging from 18 to 80 ft. The 95 state-of-the-art Bellingham docks on the north side are constructed with steel framing and 4 ft wide concrete walkways. They provide all the amenities for the modern vessel including 30 and 50 amp service along with “valet pump-out” service at every slip! For the more traditional at-heart, we also off er our charming wood-constructed covered boat slips, with sizes 20 to 50 ft. Located in our famous “horse-shoe” section, it off ers protection and ambiance unmatched anywhere.

European Vacation March 2016If you were able to join us for the European Vacation Cruise to Willow Berm, you were fortunate to experience the “springtime in Paris” weather. As many cruise leaders know, weather conditions can be a big factor when planning an event… especially in March. Doug and I watched the weather channel as though we were attempting an Atlantic crossing. The 10-day forecast fluctuated between sunshine and rain; the latter would have put a damper on the scheduled outdoor activities. But as the weekend approached, we were relieved to see the sunny 70-degree forecast prevail.

Although the weather was unpredictable, the all hands were a constant. We’d like to thank John & Sue Halling and George & Linda Overrose for their hard work and dedication to making the cruise a success; it was much appreciated.

Cruise attendees began

to disembark on Friday morning and continued to do so throughout the day. By evening, most vessels moored at the guest dock, while a few Willow Berm berthers opted to remain in their own slips. Friday’s buffet was a European themed potluck with open dining on the attenuator. Our skilled culinary members created a delicious dining experience for all to enjoy. Unfortunately, the elaborate ice sculptures quickly melted due to the warm weather.

On Saturday morning, the last two boats arrived and a call to muster was made. The highlight of our general meeting was the recognition of Ernie & Dana Macintyre’s 50th wedding anniversary. Congratulations, that is quite an accomplishment!

The European Vacation themed festivities continued on Saturday afternoon with a wine tasting shore excursion at the WB clubhouse.

Wines representative of France, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Spain were featured. It appears a few of our members are wine aficionados and enjoyed the varied samplings. Angelina’s Spaghetti House catered the Italian dinner that followed, and the beautiful evening concluded with live Latin music provided by Didier Bouvier. Cruise attendees embarked after the continental breakfast on Sunday morning, and the vessels were repositioned to their home ports.

In attendance: Mar Pacifico, Vanilla Float, LewSea, Plan B, Trowsnest, In His Time, SeaNorita, Toy Yot, Sea Wench, Sea Champ, La Vita, Alexa lV, Great Escape, Absolut Getaway, Coventina, Happy Ours, Tiz Min and Cheryl Leigh.

Ciao,

Jeanie Murray & Captain Doug

Meandering a little further down the San Joaquin River, marine services become a little harder to find as some service centers not on the main channel and are tucked away in sloughs or on major delta islands. Once again, I am not endorsing any individual service provider over another, but I will mention where we have had a good experience.

Pacific Boat Services - Boat haul-out up to 30 tons, bottom paint and hull repair, fiberglass and gel coat repair and painting, teak repair, custom canvas and upholstery, custom graphics, boat wraps and full detail services. Pacific Boat Services cut and installed the graphics for both Alexa III and Alexa IV and we were pleased with the results. PBS is located in the Paradise Point Marina complex at 8095 Rio Blanco Road, Stockton, CA, 95219, 209-334-2127. PBS also

provides mechanical service and repair for all major sterndrive and inboard engines at their Tower Park location.

Paradise Point Engine and Boat Repair – Factory authorized for Mercruiser, Mercury, Volvo, Nissan, Evinrude, Johnson and OMC engine, sterndrive and outboard repairs, transmission service and repair, re-powering, annual maintenance, electronics upgrades, boat haul-out to 30 tons. PPEBR is also located at the Paradise Point Marina Complex, 8090 Rio Blanco Road, Stockton, CA, 95219, 209-952-3383. www.ppebr.com

Diablo Boat Works – All aspects of marine vessel repair, renovation and maintenance. Haul-out, storage, bottom painting and repair, fabrication of bilge, potable, grey and waste water plumbing, tanks and discharge systems. Electrical AC/DC repair and install of primary and secondary charging systems, electronics install and repairs. Specialties include fabrication and repair of composite materials (fiberglass, Kevlar, carbon fiber) and traditional woodworking skills including traditional framing and planking,

laminated decking and marine joinery and finishing. 2616 Taylor Road, Bethel Island, CA, 94511.

Bethel Harbor Ltd. – Complete marine repair facility on-site, comprehensive parts and accessories department. Factory authorized and trained for Mercruiser, OMC, Volvo Penta, Crusader and Indmar engine and sterndrive repair. Haul-out up to 65 ft. and 35 tons. 3405 Harbor Road, Bethel Island, CA, 94511, 925-684-2141. www.bethelharbor.com

Next month we will check out some of the services on the Sacramento River and make our way down to the bay.

See you downriver.

The Delta is one of those amazing places that offers beautiful sunrises and sunsets as well as spirited spring days full of sunshine and sprinkles! It makes one appreciate working windshield wipers! :-) I’m also thankful for the boating buddy who helped me cook roast beef and give my husband a decent haircut! Members of SRBCNC are GRRR-EAT!

Time is Marching on and before we know it we will have hopped over Easter and be on our way to our first cruise on the hook. As we navigate the Delta waterways, it is important to keep an eye out for those pesky water hyacinths and other invasive species. It seems like this is a topic we discus every month, but it isn’t going away anytime soon so...be sure to do your part and report sightings. I still have business cards that you can keep on your boat for a handy reference. There is also a workshop in Santa Cruz on May 19 that will help members gain an understanding of the

impact Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) have on the environment, how to recognize, and how to take action to prevent spreading AIS. More information can be located at dbw.ca.gov -just click on calendar of events where you will also find the dates for Dockwalker Training.

There is a Free Safe Boating Seminar offered on May 14 at Andreas Cove Yacht Club on Brannon Island Road. You can bring your expired fire extinguishers and flares for hands on training in case you missed our training in October. Other topics include VHF radio use, crew overboard recovery, vessel towing demo, and more. Go to andreascoveyc.org and click on the training page for complete details.

The Yachting Yearbooks will be out soon and a new feature will be a boat index. This will allow folks to look up the club/owner of a specific vessel.

PICYA is working on discount programs and has started a newsletter for better communication. Current information will be published the second Tuesday of each month. You’ll find lots of great information including details regarding Pittsburg’s Opening Day Parade on April 9 and South Bay Opening Day on April 16.

RBOC reminds us that they are the legislative voice of boaters at the capital. They are watching the twin tunnel project closely, working to get general fund money to fight invasive species, as well as monitoring the purchase of islands in the Delta by Metropolitan Water District.
