SEPTEMBER 2019
Window on Windsor Hills
Back-to-Church Sunday, September 8
When all the school systems have begun a new year and we settle into our fall
routines... all children are invited to bring their backpacks to church and we
will bless the backpacks at both services on September 8. We will also honor
our volunteers in our Children’s and Youth Sunday School during the Sunday
School hour with a Volunteer Brunch. (Youth, see page 8 for lunch & movie
plans that day, too!)
And we will begin a special sermon series, entitled “Pressure Cooker—the #1
Things that Stress Me Out.” A great day to invite your friends, neighbors or strangers at the coffee
shop!

page 2 Volume 9 The Pastor Writes…...
The Pastor Writes… Dear Friends, Do you know where the name Methodist comes from? When the Wesleys (John and Charles) were at Oxford, they formed a group called “The Holy Club.” They were quite methodical in their ways of living out their faith, while carrying out their studies. Originally, the term was one given by others, as a term of derision, because of their intensely methodical ways of living. Later, John Wesley applied the term to his group for their methodical ways of pursuing holiness (see recent sermon—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, faithfulness and self-control—the fruit of God’s Spirit). This is still the hallmark of those of us who are United Methodist. Not only does it apply to our way of living out our faith—daily and routine prayer, regular attendance of worship, generosity in giving of time, talent, and treasure, service to God not as an occasional thing, but an everyday thing, and witness to God’s glory. These are the vows we take at our baptism, if you didn’t recognize them (prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness). Let us be methodical in these things. We are also methodical in our operations within the church. Particularly, it is time for one of those methods to be played out. It is Charge Conference time, as we prepare for ours on October 29 at 6:30 pm. During this season, we prepare for the year to come (even though we have just passed the half-way mark of the current year). Without this discipline, many churches would not pray and develop plans for the coming year, in service and outreach, in growth together as the people of God. During this season, we prepare for the coming year by praying, by planning for our emphases for the coming year, for our budget, and for our leadership. These things don’t sound exciting, but they are the structure upon which hangs the work and the joy of our life together happen. If everyone were to answer the question, “what is the best thing that happens at Windsor Hills,” we would discover that many of these things happen because of this holy work of praying, planning and preparing. So, you are invited during this season as we do this work, to especially pray for your church and for our ministry together and all of the preparation that goes into it. As a matter of fact, I hope that you pray for your church every day, that we may be a beacon of God’s love here on this hill in south-west Roanoke. The methods may be droll, but God does mighty things when we do this work well. And sometimes surprises us despite ourselves! Peace,
Doug
Fall Wednesday Night
Bible Study
Begins September 11
For several weeks during this fall, come join us as we journey with Peter and Paul and all of the early disciples. We will be studying the book of Acts, whose fuller name is the Acts of the Apostles. One teacher (and perhaps many) has said that it would be more appropriately called the Acts of the Holy Spirit. The main character early on is Peter and then he rather disappears from the story. Later, the main character is Paul. The true main character, the main actor in the story is the Holy Spirit.
Sign up, beginning Sunday, on a sign-up sheet in the breezeway…or e-mail Pastor Doug at [email protected]. Invite a friend to come along with you. Let’s fill up the Church Library!
Each week, we will focus on several chapters in Acts, with roughly one hour for study and fifteen minutes for prayer together. Hope to see you there.

Leadership Note :
We are moving into a new season, as summer concludes and we gradually slip into fall. In the
church, it is also time for our Charge Conference, on Tuesday, October 29. For those who hold an
elected position, we will assume that unless you tell us otherwise that you are willing to continue to
serve in that position, if you were to be nominated. If you
have a particular place you would like to serve, please let Pas-
tor Doug know.
Preparing for 2020
Our ministry groups and committees have begun the work of
preparing, dreaming, and planning for the coming year,
resulting in our Ministry Planning Session on August 26.

Children’s Ministries...
Parents,
I was walking through the Bible lessons we are going to focus on in September and I was struck by such a simple phrase: God knows who we really are. He sees the potential we each have and calls us to do His work. I was captivated by what a truly special gift that really is. We are CALLED to follow His call for our lives. One of my favorite quotes has always been: God does not call the qualified, he qualifies the called. Let that sit with you for a little while! Some of us may feel overwhelmed by parenting. We may be caught in the comparison cycle where we wonder if we are living up to a certain standard. What if I told you, YOU were exactly the people God wanted to parent the children you have been given? He knew exactly what your kids would need and entrusted you to provide it for them.
Take a deep breath and embrace your calling knowing full well he will equip you along the way. I encourage you to set your eyes upon Jesus and look full into his wonderful face and be surrounded by the light of His glory and grace. Lean into your calling and remember God knows who you really are. One way I set my sights on Jesus in my parenting is to pray a blessing over my children each night. Choose an uplifting or comforting scripture from the Bible and pray the same verse over them each night. What a gift to go to sleep being blessed and reassured of who you are! Here is the one I pray over my boys each night: “May the Lord bless you and keep you; May his face shine down upon you and give you peace. May he keep you safe, healthy, and may you always know his love.” I tweaked the Numbers verse just a little bit.
Sunday School: This month, we are learning about Job and how God doesn’t always take away sad times. We are reminded through the story of David that God watches over us as he is our Shepherd. I also love we are talking about how God chose Jeremiah and He knows who we really are.
Upcoming Events & Activities: Practice for the Children’s Sabbath and the Christmas Musical have begun. Be on the look-out for e-mails with additional practice times. Have your children practice their parts.

What If There Is An Answer?
This is the time of year, when church leaders begin discussing next year’s budget. They look at the giving for this year thus far and the past few years. Figures are reviewed, budget requests are received, staff compensation considered, all far too often under a cloud of anxiety. It is unfortunate that anxiety is a part of the picture, but it is. God did not design the church to be anxious about money. It has too much power over us and too often takes the joy out of serving Christ and his church. What if there is an answer that lies right in front of us? Well, there is. God has given us the answer from the very beginning. It is the tithe and it is generosity. With these two biblically based teachings your church can receive all it needs and more to accomplish it’s mission. When the nation of Israel was established all of Israel was taught to give of their “first-fruits” to support the work of the temple. From oil for the lamps, to lambs for the sacrifices, to food for the Levites who were assigned temple duties, this was primary. The tithe was seen as a response for God’s graciousness to Israel. Additional giving was for the festivals and to support the poor. In the gospels, Jesus says little about the tithe but preaches about the danger of riches and depending on one’s wealth and not on God. In the letters of Paul and others, generosity has become, in my opinion, the new standard. Generosity is a gift of the Holy Spirt (Galatians 5:22-24). I believe the tithe still stands as a benchmark, and as Betsy Schwartzentrub says in Guidelines for Stewardship, 2012, “The tithe is the floor, not the ceiling.”* Imagine; if all Christians everywhere joyfully embraced the tithe and generosity as a normal practice of spiritual discipline. Imagine. What difference would that make for your church? It is a serious question and deserves pondering. Estimates are that Christians give about 2-3% of their income. Faithful worshipers maybe 4%. But what if we all gave 10%? Or more? What if this had been our practice for generations? Imagine. So what about next year? Maybe even this Fall, will you be among those who practice the tithe and/or generosity as one part of your spiritual life? Begin now to prayerfully discern how you can bring this spiritu-al discipline into your home and life. God will show you the way. And practice generosity! Always practice generosity!

Shepherds
We are blessed to have thirty-
four members of Windsor Hills
UMC serving as shepherds.
These “shepherds”, each hav-
ing six or seven families as
"sheep", add a personal and
caring touch
to our congregation. This
program has been ongoing for approximately
fifteen years. Many of them have been serving
the program from the beginning, while others
have been added as needed. Thank you,
Shepherds, for being special caregivers of our
congregation. If anyone has questions or would
be interested in being part of the Shepherd
program, give me a call — Shirley Biggs,
774-4208 or 915-9694.
Windsor Hills is starting a Bowling League! As of the end of
August, we have five teams of five signed up to bowl. We
would love to have more. This is a great opportunity to spend
time with each other, make new friends, and invite others in
the community to join us. On Wednesday, Sept. 25th, we will
gather at Lee-Hi Lanes off Apperson for a brief meeting with
the staff. After our meeting, we will bowl three free games
and have some fun.
Important Details:
*League Night is Wednesday evenings at 6:15 pm (October through mid-April)
*Ages 18 and up are encouraged to participate. Families may bring children/youth
to bowl on separate lanes
*Cost is $10 per week, free shoe rental, and t-shirts will be between $10-$12
(If this interests you, but cost is an issue…please let Heather know. We want YOU
to join us.)
