General Conference Follow-Up

Notes from Pastor Doug

As you likely know, the Traditional Plan passed at the Special Session of General Conference in February, as we sought to bring unity to our divisions regarding human sexuality. The Judicial Council ruling in April noted that some provisions of the Traditional Plan were unconstitutional according to the The Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church (¶1-99). A Virginia Conference power-point and explanatory notes at https://www.vaumc.org/GC2019 may clear up exactly what will and will not go into effect, scheduled to be January 1, 2020 in the United States. Note that you need to look at both to have a clear understanding as the notes are supplemental information to the slides. While the notes are at the bottom of the Power-Point slides, they are easier to read in the separate document. Here are the primary changes to our current polity as I understand them. • Mandatory Minimum Penalties for pastors who perform a same-sex wedding are set denomination

wide at one-year suspension for the first offense and termination of credentials for the second offense.

• While a Just Resolution may be sought in a particular case, the new provision is that the bringer of the complaint must be satisfied with the outcome.

• While it has been true that United Methodist Clergy may not be a “self-avowed practicing homosexual,” the new disciplinary provisions clarify exactly what that means—being in a same-sex marriage, a civil union, or domestic partnership, or having made a public declaration of being gay. Because various conferences have enforced this prohibition according to their local standards, a number of clergy are already serving who are LGBTQ. Those persons may be brought to a church trial in order to remove their credentials after January 1, 2020.

• Conference Boards of Ordained Ministry and District Committees on Ministry are prohibited from recommending any person who is gay for ordination. The provision for those groups to be vetted to certify their willingness to do so, however, was declared unconstitutional.

- Continued from page 2

• There is a provision for those churches who disagree with the denomination’s position on human sexuality who wish to exit the denomination to do so with their property intact. There is a step-by-step process for that to happen. The deadline for doing so is December 31, 2023.

As to what will happen in the near and distant future, none of us know. Because we are a democracy (and democracy is messy), any or all of these provisions may change with our regularly scheduled General Conference just four months after these new provisions are scheduled to take effect. Since it would then be four years until the next General Conference, more may become clearer about what is our way forward as a denomination, as two or three denominations, and as to our polity as United Methodists. A few churches may leave the denomination…or many may leave the denomination. Individuals will make their own decisions, still, according to their own consciences, which will impact our attraction of new members and retention of current ones. As you are probably aware, I see this as a justice issue, focusing on the Open Table of the Lord. What I have loved about the United Methodist Church, and how it has formed me, is that we are a people of grace, rather than law. For those who are in committed, same-sex relationships, I believe that the Church should encourage their faithfulness to one another, honor their love for one another and use their gifts for ministry as lay persons or as clergy to extend the gospel of Jesus Christ to the ends of the earth. I also believe that we need to stay in conversation with one another, whether we agree or disagree, so that God’s Holy Spirit may continue to work in mighty ways as in Acts 15, in the early Church’s time of disagreement.

One thing that I want you to remember is this— we are still Windsor Hills UMC and what makes us special is a loving and welcoming spirit, along with a passion for serving

our community. Let us continue to be who we are…and remember whose we are. We belong to a God of grace and

peace.

Peace,

Doug

That having been said, we will have a gathering for all who are interested in having further conversation within Windsor Hills UMC on Monday evening, July 22 at 7 pm.

Dear Scholarship Committee,

Thank you for your generous scholarship award. I am

unbelievably grateful for this opportunity and financial burden it

will lift.

Dear Scholarship Committee,

Thank you for the generous donation from Windsor

Hills UMC.

Dear Windsor Hills,

Thank you for the generous Amazon gift card you gave me and for celebrating my PT school

graduation with me! It meant a lot. The money will help me buy some new scrubs to wear for my

job in DC. Being a part of WHUMC was so instrumental in where I am today and I am so thankful

for a church family that has continued to support me during my studies.

Love,

Greta Weidner

WHUMC,

Thank you so much for recognizing us as graduates in the service and for the Amazon gift card. I

have loved growing up in this church and cannot thank you all enough for all of your support. I’m

looking forward to seeing where the future takes me! Thanks again for all of the support!

Love,

Carla Weidner

After Care Goes to the ZOO…

On June 11 several of our After Care members and volun-

teers went to Mill Mountain Zoo. We took our own box

lunches and enjoyed an outdoor picnic. We had 2 volun-

teers from the Zoo give us a tutorial on a beautiful, colorful

parrot as well as a great big tortoise

who moved more quickly than any of us anticipated. Then we saw all the

animals and enjoyed the scenery of bamboo and greenery (that rhymes).

Many of us took the train ride, making us feel like kids again.

It was a special day for those who attended, as it was so good to be away

from the concrete of our everyday lives and enjoy the ride up to Mill

Mountain Star and Zoo with friends who all had a good time.

Volume 7 † CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES †

Children’s Ministries...

By now, VBS has passed and we have enjoyed family time at Fairystone. We purposefully cleared

the calendar during July to allow time for everyone to enjoy their family and not feel pulled in

various directions. Summer should be a time of slowing down and drinking in all the sounds and

tastes of summer. Like splashing in pools, cooking out on the grill, late nights catching lightning

bugs, picnics, hikes, and so many other activities our children will remember as they get older.

Some of my best memories of being a kid involve sitting on the porch of my grandparents’ house

while my Papaw made homemade peach ice cream and my Grandma told stories. I reminiscence

on my times playing flashlight tag and running through the sprinkler with my brothers. It truly is

the simple gift of time our children remember. Slow down and live in the moments.

Upcoming Events & Activities: During the summer months, Sunday School slows down and we

move into our Sunday Summer of Fun during the months of June and July. Below is a listing of

each week’s activities:

June 30th: Cookies for Fire Dept. Bring cookies to Fellowship Hall at 10 am. Children will pack

them and then after church they will deliver them.

July 7th: Ice Cream Sundaes and Table Favors for the Rescue Mission

July 14th: Popsicles & Outdoor Activities in the Lower Lot

July 21st: Homeless Blessing Bags & Tie-Dye Activities

July 28th: Water Day

Coming in August….Family Movie Night! TBA

Helping Hands is a new District-Wide Children’s Mission Event and will be held at Windsor Hills

this year. I will be contacting parents soon of those rising 3rd through 6th graders to see if they are

interested in participating. The focus is on service, friendship, and a fun sleepover inside the church.

Mark your calendars for July 25th & July 26th. Please let me know if your child/friends would be

interested in attending.

Blessings,

Heather

A Summer Blessing

May you walk with God this summer in whatever you do wherever you go. Walking with God means... walking with honesty and with courage. Walking with love and respect and concern for the feelings of others.

May you talk to God this summer on every day and in every situation.

Talking with God means... praying words of praise for the beauty of creation. Saying prayers of thanks for friends and good times. Asking God's help in all your decisions. Expressing sorrow when you have failed.

May you talk with God every day. Amen. © BeliefNet
