STEEL REPLACEMENTWINDOWSAlthough not a mainstream product nowadays, steel windows were once the normand remain in-situ today in many homes from a certain era. Whichever option, or combination ofoptions that you choose, it is important that your new windows and doors work foryou - with your lifestyle, property and space that you have available. Give yourdesign consultant as much relevant information as possible so that they can offeryou the most suitable solution.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

By deciding to replace your windows and doors, you’ve given yourself theopportunity to significantly improve the efficiency of your home, lower its runningcosts and reduce your household carbon footprint. The energy efficiency ofwindows – how much or little heat they allow to escape - is scored using an energyrating scheme akin to that used for electrical and white goods, with an ‘A-rating’being among the best ratings achievable.

SECURITY

Security will no doubt be high on your agenda. The materials, components andfabrication processes used to manufacture windows and doors will all impact uponthe level of security provided, as will the quality of the installation. High quality,modern windows and doors should all provide impressive security as standard but‘Secured by Design' windows and doors which are manufactured to BritishStandards and approved by the UK Police may be another option to consider forinstallation in particularly vulnerable locations such as ground floors.

APPEARANCE

UPVC

Low maintenance, long lasting and veryaffordable, Classic UPVC is theautomatic choice for many homeowners.This frame option is also one of the maincontributing factors to the impressivethermal efficiency of UPVC windows anddoors, which retain more of a home’snatural heat and reduce the owner’sreliance on central heating. Thecontoured profile features a curvedexternal bead and the overall effect is acharming, sculptured frame which isperfect for domestic applications andcan be easily shaped and curved intoarched windows and doors.

ALUMINIUM

Contemporary Aluminium is all aboutsleek sightlines and maximum glassareas. There’s a sense of kudos aboutContemporary Aluminium that goes farbeyond kerb appeal and those who setout for aluminium windows and doorsrarely change their mind. The intricatecontour on the outside face of the profileis subtle and the chamfered bead craftsclean sightlines. Contemporary Aluminiumis available in a range of powder coatedfinishes which result in true, deep coloursor you may prefer the look of asublimated woodgrain finish which issecond only to natural wood itself.

HERITAGE

You could be forgiven for mistakingTraditional Heritage windows and doorsfor authentic timber products; such is thereplication of the aesthetics in style,dimension and finish. The window sashsits flush with the window frame in theclosed position - a standout feature of19th Century timber windows. However,the Traditional Heritage frame is actuallya composite material which boasts 21stCentury advantages such as a lowmaintenance finish, integral thermalefficiency and durability. TraditionalHeritage windows and doors aremechanically jointed as opposed towelded and this is one of several reasonswhy these windows can be consideredfor use in conservation areas.

GLAZING OPTIONSOnce you’ve chosen the most suitable frame option you once again have theluxury of choice with regards to glass. The technical specification of the glasswill largely depend on whether you opt for Energy Rated Windows, but there’salso wide variety of aesthetic options such as leaded glass and astragal bars.

DOUBLE GLAZING

Double glazing has long been, andremains, the most suitable specificationof glazing for the majority of domesticproperties, so much so that manypeople simply refer to windows as‘double glazing’. Double glazing owes its superiority over single glazing to theinsulating cavity that is created by thetwo panes of glass, the intelligentproperties of the glass itself and othermaterials and components that make up the ‘sealed unit’. Energy efficient A-rated windows are easily achievedwith a double glazing specification.

TRIPLE GLAZING

As its name suggests triple glazingcomprises of three panes of glass thatmake up the complete sealed unit. Tripleglazed windows and doors look all butidentical to those which are doubleglazed and they offer the same fantasticbenefits but, crucially, triple glazingprovides a greater level of energyefficiency. The extra pane of glass usedin triple glazing creates a secondinsulating cavity which also helps tofurther reduce draughts and cold spotsin homes that are subject to particularlyextreme and cold weather conditions.

PRIVACY GLAZING

Bathroom windows and front doors areprime examples of where privacy glazingis quite often essential in order to let innatural light without compromising yourprivacy. There are a number of varied yetappealing patterned glass designs whichobscure an onlooker’s view so that youcan feel comfortable in your home.Patterned glass can be used in bothdouble glazed and triple glazed sealedunits so energy efficiency and noisereduction need not be sacrificed.

COLOURS & WOODGRAINS Across the Classic UPVC, Contemporary Aluminium and Traditional Heritage ranges there are literally hundreds of colours,finishes and combinations to choose from. Even if you already have a very good idea about what you’re after, there’s still plentyto consider such as a whether you’d prefer a textured woodgrain or a smooth surface finish, and whether you want the samecolour on both sides of the frames, or different colours on the inside such as Oak externally and White internally. The commondenominator of every colour and finish across the Classic UPVC, Contemporary Aluminium and Traditional Heritage ranges isdurability and long lasting charm. And if you’ve ever had timber windows before you’ll realise what a relief it is to know thatyou’ll never have to repaint or reapply any of these colour finishes.

UPVC COLOURS

Classic UPVC can be whatever colouryou want it to be: a specially developedpaint application process can beemployed to match even the mostunique colours. In the standard colourrange, however, are timeless classicssuch as White, Whitegrain, Cream andChartwell Green. Emerging favouritesinclude Black, Grey and Irish Oak.

ALUMINIUM COLOURS

The 11-stage powder coating processthat Contemporary Aluminium is subjectto induces strong paint adhesions andresults in a true colour which is sheerquality to the look and touch. SimilarlyContemporary Aluminium woodgrainfinishes benefit from a unique processknown as sublimation which results inWalnut, Rosewood or Oak appearanceswhich are utterly convincing and secondonly to real wood itself.

HERITAGE COLOURS

Traditional 19th Century timber windowswere very often painted so a small butperfectly formed range of heritage paintcolours can be specified with thesetimber alternative windows. Painswick,Clotted Cream and Cotswold biscuit willwhet your appetite and give you a flavourof the kinds of colours that are available,whereas other options such as CorseLawn and Eclectic Grey. Equally stunningnatural wood finishes exist in the form ofEnglish, Irish and Silvered Oak.
