The Windsor Story

706.738.7777 or 800.605.1060 | WINDSOR FINE JEWELERS | www.WindsorFineJewelers.com

2635 Washington Road, Augusta, Georgia 30904 | 6809 Phillips Place Court, Charlotte, NC 28210-2723

It’s a retailing miracle, really. By the numbers, impossible. A four showcase jewelry store in Augusta,Georgia grows to become one of National Jeweler Magazine’s Top Ten Independent Jewelers InAmerica, and today extends its brand to Charlotte, North Carolina, to a revitalization of the greatFriedman’s Jewelers name, and to a fleet of recreational vehicles designed to take gold and jewelry

recycling to a new level of convenience.

ALL THIS FROM FOUR SHOWCASES? YES.

The product of a jewelry family, Windsor founder Donnie Thompson acquires the 1975-created WindsorJewelers and immediately sets about making Windsor the preeminent jeweler in the Aiken-Augusta market. In the 1980s Windsor remodels and moves in to a nearby former bank building, continuing to lure majorjewelry talent from across the Southeast. One by one, the world’s marquee jewelry names align themselveswith the Windsor name. By the mid 90s Windsor’s growth demands an entirely new two-story, superstoreformat, and in 1998 the ribbon to nearly 10,000 square feet of dazzling new display space overlookingthe Augusta National Golf Club is cut.

The new century sees the acquisition of long-time Augusta landmark Doris Diamonds and Charlotte,North Carolina luxury jeweler Lions Jewelers. Mr. Thompson is honored as Retail Jeweler Of The Yearby the Southeastern Chapter of the 24 Carat Club, and Windsor’s web site, windsorfinejewelers.combecomes a model for jewelers everywhere, setting an industry benchmark for worry-free ecommerce.

Today the brick-and-mortar Windsor Fine Jewelers showcases 13 of the world’s names in timekeeping, joining more than a thousand world-class jewelry and fine gift suppliers to form a roll call of industrylegends like Rolex, Roberto Coin, TAG Heuer, David Yurman, Mikimoto, Breitling, Tacori, John Hardy,Pandora and many more.

Truly, a retailing miracle. And whatever the future may hold, what will never change are the threeconstants that have been Windsor’s hallmark since 1975: unrivaled service, unequaled selection andunbeatable savings.

706.738.7777 or 800.605.1060 | WINDSOR FINE JEWELERS | www.WindsorFineJewelers.com

THE DRESS

Duchess satin, slipper satin, taffeta, organza, chiffon, douppioni, broderie Anglais, peau desoie. Just the names of wedding dress fabricssound shimmering and magical. You mayhave the diamond on your finger and a depositwith the caterer, but you won’t really feel likethe bride-to-be until you step out of a dressingroom to the tears and cheers of your motheror your best friend.

Some helpful hints:

• Floral embroidery and tiny, covered buttonscreate a delicate, snowy white pattern thatplays off flowers in the bridal bouquet.• A thin ribbon or sash around the waist or alacy hem grazing a pair of sandals can make agown extraordinary.• Fresh flowers tucked into the hair set off anunstudied wedding look, yet they add anappropriate flourish to a more formal gown.• A veil is often thought of as a traditionalaccessory, intended to be worn with a classicdress such as boatneck or A-line style. But asweeping version can lend an exotic touch to amore modern slip dress.

The most joyous of occasions is the union of man andwoman in celebration of life. It’s a wonderful momentin the life of two individuals but a lot has to take placebefore the union can become a “hybrid” of one!

Planning your momentous day can be very enjoyable or veryfrustrating depending on your ability to communicate, make wisechoices, and stick to an overall sound plan of action. Remember, start early and it’s best if both parties are involved to keep thestress levels low. Our guide will help you narrow down your major decisionsby following several quick (but good) guidelines to having asuccessful day! From picking your wedding dress, photographer, invitations, flowers, etc., we have it all covered. So, keep this guide handy and remember Windsor FineJewelers when it’s time to plan that special day. We carry a wideselection of ring styles, bands and diamond cuts; from roundbrilliants to pear cut diamonds; from classic solitaires to vintageart deco styles; from engraved bands to eternity bands ... we havethem all ... It’s the Windsor Way!

If you’re thinking engagement, think Windsor Fine Jewelers.

Page 28: Windsor Fine Jewelers Magazine

PHOTOGRAPHY/VIDEO

Questions you’ll want to ask: • What packages are offered and how many photos are included in each package? • Are the proofs yours to keep or do you have to purchase them? • What is the cost for additional time or photos? • How much is the deposit and when is it due? • When is the balance due? • Is there a travel charge? • Are the negatives available to purchase and, if so, do you have to wait a specified time before you can purchase them?

Start comparative shopping early, insist on viewing samples of the photographerswork (from more than one album). To cutcosts, enlist family and friends who areshutter bugs. Place disposable cameras on the guests’ tables with a note requestingcandid shots. This will help to ensureplentiful wedding photos.

When interviewing your prospectivevideographers, you might want to ask themthe following questions: What video formatis offered? What are the charges for extratime or tape? Will the videographer haveback-up equipment available in the eventdifficulties are encountered? How manycameras will be covering the events? Can a videographic collage be provided? Is a choice of background music available? Are title screens provided? Does the artistprovide lighting, or does he rely only onavailable light? If friends or family want topurchase copies of the tape, can they, andhow much will they cost? These are all ofthe things that should be asked whenchoosing wedding videography.

INVITATIONS

A wedding invitation heralds somethingspecial. It’s a signal to your friends andfamily that the day you’ve talked about formonths is finally here. Your choice of paper, format, type style, printing method andembellishment will make a first and lastingimpression of your wedding. Given thestaggering number of possibilities, it’ssometimes hard to know where to start.

Things to consider:

• The style of the wedding• The setting• The season in which it will be held• The formality: Black tie or beach attire?• Indoors or out?• Does your guest list number 200 or is it a more intimate affair?

You should mail your invitations six to eightweeks before the wedding and invitations tothe rehearsal dinner two or three weeks afterthat. Include an RSVP card to help keep trackof head count.

While many elements of a weddinginvitation can vary, including the size, shape, color, weight and material from which it’smade, when it comes to putting ink to paper, these are your four basic options:

• Engraving• Letterpress• Offset Lithography• Thermography

(Consult with your printer for details)

WEDDING PARTY

A good wedding tip to make sure thebridal party stays happy: be sure that all of your attendants eat breakfast or lunch—it could be hours before you get to the reception and havesomething to eat, and being hungrymakes everyone nervous and cranky.

When you’re picking out bridesmaiddresses, remember that your friends are on budgets. Even if it’s absolutelygorgeous, dont pick a gown that isgoing to make it difficult for them topurchase. They’re most likely onlygoing to wear it once, and won’t loveyou if you pick something that coststwo hundred dollars or more, especiallyconsidering that they also have to payfor shoes, bridal shower, shower gift, wedding gift, lodging, transportationand more. Don’t forget to pick out anice bridesmaid gift for your friends as well.

Make sure you’re prepared foremergencies on your big day: take alonga purse or bag containing items such asBand-Aids, clear nail polish, needle andthread, aspirin, an extra pair of hose, and other things that might come inhandy in a pinch. Give them to abridesmaid to keep for you.

CATERING

When it comes time to give the final numberof guests to your caterer, don’t forget toinclude meals for your DJ/band members, photographer, videographer and weddingconsultant (ask them beforehand if they’dlike meals). Sometimes the caterer will giveyou discounts for vendor meals.

Be sure to get detailed quotes from yourcaterer regarding specific food items. This isespecially important to remember if youareplanning for a wedding that’s more than sixmonths away. Perishable food prices canchange; be sure you’re prepared by askingthese questions:

• Are you guaranteed the price on the food quote or can it change? • Will you be charged more overall if the caterer’s cost of food increases? • How and when would you be notified of a price increase? • Can you make substitutions?• Do you cater full-time?• Do you have any formal training?• How long have you been a caterer?• What is the ratio of staff to guests?• What equipment do you provide?• Are there extra charges for buffet servers, champagne toast, cake cutting, bartenders, etc.?• Can you provide the cake?

REHEARSAL DINNER

At a rehearsal dinner, family and friendstoast the couple, the bride and groom cangive thank-you gifts to their attendants, andyour families can get to know one anotherbetter if they haven’t spent much timetogether prior to the wedding.

If you’re not thrilled about the idea ofinviting out of town guests to yourrehearsal dinner, but feel guilty not doingso, you might want to consider having yourrehearsal dinner two days before yourwedding—no guests will have arrived, andyou won’t feel guilty for not inviting them.

Traditionally it’s the groom’s family who hosts the rehearsal dinner, but intoday’s world it can be given by the bride’s family or the couple themselves.

Keep your rehearsal dinner light andcasual: a barbecue, clambake, pastasupper—anything non-formal that will let you chill out with your guests. If possible, have your dinner two nightsahead instead of the night before ... you’llhave a more relaxing wedding eve, you’llhopefully get more sleep, and you’ll havethe chance to catch your breath before the big day.

FLOWERS

To cut your wedding flower costs, havethe arrangements from your church orother ceremony location moved to thereception location. You’ll get double the use!

Todays best selling wedding flowerbouquets epitomize simplistic elegance.Eight bunched calla lilies tied withribbon are not only economical butstunning. The “rose ball” bouquet isvery popular and looks best with only a small amount of greens as an accentto the roses. Tulips dressed in the samefashion are a spring delight. Withsmaller bouquets and much less needfor filler flowers, the savings can reallyadd up.

Consider the traditional meaningsbehind each wedding flower:

• Red Rose - Love; • Yellow Rose - Devotion; • Daisy - Purity; • Gardenia - Joy; • Orchard - Beauty; • Blue Violet - Constancy; • Forget-Me-Not - True Love; • Red Chrysanthemum - Sharing; • Lily of the Valley - Happiness

If you want wedding flowers for yourchurch but are on a tight budget, focusthe flowers on the main point of action:the altar or front of the room. Flowerson the ends of pews are pretty, buteveryone’s going to be looking at thealtar for the majority of the ceremony.

Page 30: Windsor Fine Jewelers Magazine

THE HONEYMOON

The world is waiting for you!

First, sit down with your partner and findout what each of you had in mind for ahoneymoon. Do you prefer the mountains, beach, a cruise, a big city spot, or a themehoneymoon such as a Sandals Resort?

What you do in your spare time maydetermine where you go for yourhoneymoon. Are you the kind of couple wholikes to lay out in the sun all day? Or, do thetwo of you like hiking and participating inextreme sports? Another consideration isthe length of time you're allotting for yourhoneymoon. If you plan to spend two weeks, does the destination you're considering haveenough activities to last you?

Finances are often a major factor. But thesedays, traveling can be quite affordable—fromseven-day cruises where they upgrade youfor being newlyweds, to all-inclusive resorts.

• The most popular honeymoon destination in the world is Hawaii. It's perfect for activities or relaxation and couples can stay put or take short flights to different islands.• Mexico is a close second. It's one of the most affordable honeymoon destinations on the planet.• If you're a couple that never sleeps, Las Vegas is a perfect choice.• Want to really explore different parts of the world? You might want to look into a European honeymoon like Paris, France or the Greek Isles.

CLASSIC CUTS

ROUND BRILLIANT (shown below)This shape has set the standard for all otherdiamond shapes, and accounts for more than75% of diamonds sold today. Its 58-facetcut, divided among its crown (top), girdle(widest part) and pavilion (base), is calibratedthrough a precise formula to achieve themaximum in fire and brilliance.

EMERALDThis is a rectangular shape with cut corners. It is known as a step cut because its concentric, broad, flat planes resemble stair steps. Sinceinclusions and inferior color are morepronounced in this particular cut, take painsto select a stone of superior clarity and color.

MARQUISEAn elongated shape with pointed ends, theMarquise cut was inspired by the fetchingsmile of the Marquise de Pompadour andcommissioned by the Sun King, France's LouisXIV. It is gorgeous when used as a solitaire orwhen enhanced by smaller diamonds.

OVALAn even, perfectly symmetrical design ispopular among women with small hands orshort fingers. Its elongated shape gives aflattering illusion of length to the hand.

PEAR (shown above)A hybrid cut, combining the best of the ovaland the marquise, it is shaped most like asparkling teardrop. It also belongs to thatcategory of diamond whose design mostcomplements a hand with small or average-length fingers. It is particularly beautiful forpendants or earrings.

HEARTThis ultimate symbol of romance is essentiallya pear-shaped diamond with a cleft at the top.The skill of the cutter determines the beautyof the cut. Look for a stone with an evenshape and a well-defined outline.

THE RECEPTION

What can you do to make sure in yourWedding Reception Planning the invitedguests not only RSVP but do not bring“additional” guests? Either hire awedding coordinator or designate anon-family member not known to theguest to call and confirm before youneed your final count.

Plain champagne is not the only cocktailfor a wedding reception; you could trykir royale, mimosas, or champagneframboise (mixed with a dash ofraspberry liqueur). These alternativesare much prettier and more festive.

Traditionally the head table features thebride and groom in the middle; you cango either with the best man next to thebride and the maid of honor next to thegroom (and then boy-girl down bothsides), or you can put all the girls onone side and all the guys on the other. If you don’t want to have one big table, you don’t have to—you can have thebride, groom, maid of honor and herdate, and best man and his date at one smaller table, and the rest of theattendants and their dates at anothertable. It’s up to you! The parents, siblings, and grandparents of bothcouples sit at the table that’s closest tothe head table.

WEDDING BANDS

PLAIN BANDThe basic band, in yellow gold, white gold or platinum, is favored by bothminimalists, who love it for its simplicity, and jewelry-loving brides who want a ringthat goes with everything. A plain band canhave a rounded shape, appear flat or have abevel, known as knife edged. It can alsofeature millegraining—tiny beadwork alongthe top and bottom edges that give anantique look.

ENGRAVED BANDBands with carving or engraving on theoutside can incorporate design motifs—dainty floral ones or sinuous Celtic ones, for instance—or words, initials or phrases, the lettering working as decorative elementsas well as bearers of meaning. Considerdisplaying your initials, your wedding datein Roman numerals, or a few words from apoem that’s meaningful to you as a couple. You’ll have a ring that’s one of a kind.

ETERNITY BAND (shown above)In the 1950’s, Marilyn Monroe and AudreyHepburn popularized this style, whichfeatures diamonds (often channel-set ones)all the way around the band—meant tosymbolize endless love. Eternity bands canshowcase round, emerald or princess cuts,or even tiny pavé stones. Because they relyon a collection of relatively small diamondsto dazzle, eternity bands can be anaffordable alternative to a solitaire.

OPENWORK BANDWide bands with airy filigree and organicmotifs that recall antique styles have caughton recently—perhaps because they manageto be both delicate and substantial at once. While often covered with diamonds, creating an enchanting pattern of sparkleand space, the gems usually used aregenerally small, which means they can giveglitter without a big price tag.

RING STYLES

CLASSIC SOLITAIREWhile this iconic style may now seem timeless, the custom of a single diamond gracinga metal band really only dates back to the 19th century. While round brilliants aremost commonly used for solitaires, any shape of diamond can work in this simplepresentation.

SIDE STONES (shown above)This design, which made its mark in the lady-like late 40’s, uses smaller stones toflank the main one, thus flooding it with light and making it sparkle even more. Themost traditional version features a round diamond sandwiched by two tapered stonesknown as baguettes; but emerald-cut center stones and other shapes are also popular.

WIDE BAND SOLITAIRESleek and modern, this style is ideal for brides who prefer not to stack an engagementring with a wedding band since it’s strong enough to stand alone. It’s also flatteringon women with large hands. And it allows plenty of room for engraving.

VINTAGEWhether a delicate, lacy Edwardian design or a glamourous art deco look, vintage ringshave recently caught on with brides looking for something different that neverthelesshas a whiff of romance about it.

MICRO-PAVÉInvented in Paris about twenty years ago, micro- pavé is a stone-setting technique thatinvolves placing many tiny stones closely together on a ring so that it looks coveredwith diamonds. The band is usually very thin and the prongs either encircle or areunderneath the main stone. Note the resulting ring can be quite fragile.

THREE-STONESymbolizing a couple’s past, present and future, this style is unlike those that displaya center stone of roughly the same size and shape (most often round). Three-stonerings have existed for hundreds of years, but the look works for women as stylishand up-to-date.

COLORED DIAMONDSPink and yellow diamonds, also known as fancy colored diamonds, are extremelyrare (pink ones are less common than yellow, also known as canaries). Though yellowdiamonds have been used in jewelry for 100 years, only recently have they becomethe IT stone for engagement rings. Even rarer are blue and green diamonds.

CREATIVE CONCEPTSA ring that features an unusual design motif, such as a star or vine-shaped setting, intricate engraving, crossover bands, or what’s known as split shank (a band thatdivides into two with a stone nestled in between), offers an unusual way to announceyou’re spoken for. Aperture - Small opening. The dials of some watches (in French:montres a guichet) have apertures in which certain indications aregiven (the date, hour, etc.). Fig.2

Bezel - The ring which surrounds the watch dial (or face). The bezelis usually made of gold, gold plate or stainless steel. A rotating ratchetbezel moves in some sport watches as part of the timing device. Somerotating bezels are bi-directional, and can assist in calculations forelapsed times. On jewelry watches, the bezel may contain a ring ofdiamonds. On sports watches, the bezel may have calibrated markingsand the ability to rotate in one or both directions.

Caliber - The size of a watch movement or the model, style or shapeof a watch movement.

Chronograph - A watch that includes a built in stopwatch function -i.e., a timer that can be started and stopped to time an event. Theaccuracy of the stopwatch function will commonly vary from 1/5thsecond to 1/100th second depending on the chronograph. Somechronographs will measure elapsed time up to 24 hours. Watches thatinclude the chronograph function are themselves called “chronographs.”Fig.1

Crown - Also called a stem or pin, a crown is the button on theoutside of the watch case that is used to set the time and date. In amechanical watch the crown also winds the mainspring. In this caseit is also called a “winding stem”. Fig.3

Guilloché - A style of intricate engraving that is popular on watch dials, usually very thin lines interwovento create a surface texture.

Horology - The science of time measurement, including the art of designing and constructing timepieces.

Tourbillon - A device in a mechanical watch that eliminates timekeeping errors caused by the slightdifference in the rates at which a watch runs in the horizontal and vertical positions. A special complicationfound on only a few very high end mechanical watches that compensates for the effect of gravity.
