After 20 years in the design industry, Les Therrien’s genuine enjoyment

in the process is clearly evident as he discusses how he approaches his

work. His philosophy is clear: Therrien believes simple can be spectacu-

lar if the design is done right. To that end, his clients have his undivided

attention as he works to create homes that reflect not only their personal-

ity but their needs.

At a typical meeting, Therrien discusses ideas and works out a wish list with his client, keeping fac-

tors like budget, green technology, economy, aesthetic and structure firmly in mind. He understands

that each building site and each client are different. “My process is whatever we come up with. We

just start talking, exchanging ideas, putting it into the computer and revising. It’s a cycle,” Therrien

observes. He uses the latest design software, allowing clients to see a real version of the house. The

design can then be explored on the interior and exterior with landscaping, people, cars and furniture

for maximum effect and visualization.

Therrien prides himself on ensuring that clients get the best possible outcome with their project. He’s

constantly on the watch for the small, personal touches that clients often overlook. “We’re very per-

sonal in the design to ensure they’ll love it all the way through. You don’t want any ‘should have’ or

‘could have’ after the fact,” says Therrien.

A common misconception about Therrien Design is that they only cater to big budget large-scale pro-

jects. Therrien explains that’s simply not the case. He works with budgets of all sizes. “You don’t

need bazillions of dollars to do something nice. If it’s done right, it doesn’t matter how big or small it

is.”

With lower overhead, Therrien Design is very competitive against larger ar-

chitectural offices. Currently, it’s just Therrien working at the design firm he

founded in 1991. Although he has employed others in the past, he prefers

working alone since he is so hands-on. “I probably need employees again, but

it’s better for me to make sure it’s all perfect. In the end, I’m the guy that’s

responsible,” Therrien says.

Therrien’s expertise is in the residential. He’s noticed that the more tradition-

ally historic styled houses are most popular. “People are looking for that sense

of familiarity and sense of home. When you look at old European houses,

even if they’re falling apart, they look cosy. It grounds people,” he explains.

The process of the design is Therrien’s favourite aspect of a project, and with

his friendly and personable demeanour, it’s easy to understand why he has

built homes and relationships from Oregon to Michigan to Northern Ontario to

the Bahamas. Making sure a client is satisfied with the outcome is one thing,

but Therrien goes above and beyond – he makes the process fun. “We want to

make sure the client is happy and excited to be in their house. The whole pro-

cess should be fun. It’s a big deal. People are spending a lot of money and

why should it be stressful? I know they’re going to have stress in the construc-

tion, so I don’t want to be part of that. I want to be the fun part,” he says.

As for what the future holds for Therrien Design, Therrien is tight-lipped. “I

have an answer, but I can’t tell you. I have something that’s going to be quite
