Lena McKay, Freddie King, Paul Smith and Pete King discuss-ing traditional Métis territory north of Great Slave Lake. Com-munity Traditional Knowledge workshops were held recently with respect to De Beers proposed Gahcho Kué diamond mine north-east of Yellowknife.

Pete King and Angus Beaulieu being interviewed by Traditional Knowledge facilitator Peter Redvers of Crosscurrent Associates in the Fort Res. Community Hall regarding land use and occu-pancy north of the big lake. Pete was trapping up there with his father in 1946.

Arthur Beck being interviewed by facilitator Rhonda Eager of David Nairne Associates in Fort Res. about his travels east of Artillery Lake, north of Aylmer Lake and other ter-ritorial use in recent decades.

Lena McKay, Denise McKay, and Paul Smith plot Métis barren lands travel routes east and north of Great Slave Lake during the Gahcho Kué Traditional Knowledge workshop in Fort Resolution in November.

Members of the NWT Métis Nation have been talking for a long time about having their own sash; a distinctive northern sash for a distinctive northern people. Now they have one.

The NWTMN called for sub-missions in June 2009. After con-sidering various sash proposals the Board of Directors selected Fort Smith’s Lisa Hudson’s sub-mission at their September 2009 meeting. The new sash incorpo-rates a myriad of designs encom-passing many unique features of the northern landscape.

“I designed it way back at a sash making workshop, with the idea to represent our distinct cul-ture in the NWT,” Hudson said. “The red and white Métis sash is very traditional and I wanted something distinct to the NWT.” (Many traditional Métis also wore colorful sash-like arm bands and leg garters.

Each of the chevrons of the sash details different parts of the Métis environment: fireweed, northern lights, the sun, waterways, the bo-real forest, prairies and sedges, and the northern Métis people.

“To me, whenever I come home, something I always notice is the fireweed so I wanted to include it,” Hudson said. “The boreal for-est is an important part of Canada and impacts the rest of the world. The waterways are important for transportation and the sunshine and grasses support the bison.”

NWTMN’s Executive Director, Earl Jacobson, said Hudson’s sash

fit exactly what the Board of Di-rectors was looking for. ``It’s dis-tinctive and the colors are beau-tiful. It helped that she actually made the sash,” Jacobson said. Adding, “there’s nothing wrong with the traditional sash, but we wanted our own distinctive sash. We presented it at the Assembly and there was nothing but favor-able comments.”

Hudson f irst made the sash when she attended a weaving workshop presented by a Métis woman from Ontario. She thought then that the NWT Métis Nation needed its own sash, just like the Ontario Métis had. ``It identifies them, who they are and where they`re from.̀ `

Hudson`s sash design was sent to a large weaving company that mass produced the sash, the emblem that will represent the NWTMN for years to come. The

sash plays a vital role in Métis culture and sis one of the most widely recognized symbols of the people.

Originally used by voyageurs to carry their possessions (pipe, tobacco, f lint, steel, knife) on their person and as a tump line on portages, the sash still plays a versatile role. Worn while hunting it can identify hunters as Métis (with harvesting rights). It can be used as a waist pocket, a sling for an injured arm, a canoe painter, a tump line, a rope or simply as an identifying article of clothing for Métis people.

``It`s an honor to have had my design selected,̀ ` Hudson said, ̀ ` I get shivers just thinking about it.̀ `

Looking across the sash in the photo above, from left to right, you`ll notice the black outer bor-der and interspersed black bands across the sash, depicting the on-going struggle for Métis rights over the years. Moving to the right is a red band of fireweed. The wide band of dazzling north-ern lights is bordered on each side by the green and yellow northern boreal forest with its prairies and sedges. Then there is a red and white chevron band representing the Métis people. The central yel-low band is the sun surrounded on both sides by blue northern wa-terways and more boreal forest.

With thanks to Samantha Stokell of the Northern Journal and Mar-ius Barbeau, author of Assomp-tion Sash.
