4-H Team Update

As summer approaches, there are exciting things coming in Winnebago County 4-H, from camps, to project meetings, to the County Fair! Many other activities have taken place in recent months. Read what your 4-H Team has been up to lately:

Hello there! 4-H world is running strong and I get a front desk view to it all. Exciting things are happening! One thing I am stoked about is having all the project record book forms updated into Microsoft Documents! While the forms still need work to update their content, I am happy to say that saving and updating forms should be much easier for members than previous years! Another exciting thing is that our own Winnebago County 4-H Resource Guide has been awarded and recognized for a state communication award! The resource guide could also go on to receive national recog-nition as well! Way to go Winnebago! -Michelle, 4-H Support Staff

LEGO Club has been going strong with a meeting scheduled each month. We have had eager returning builders each night, along with new families coming to explore, build and program the LEGO WeDo and NXT kits. Look for some new activities/invitations regarding LEGO Club in the near future. Afterschool programs are winding down for the spring semester, but visits have been made at some new schools and schedules are being made for this fall. If you are interested in helping out with these visits, please contact Sarah. Cloverbud Camp Counselors are lined up for July, and we are getting started with planning activities for camp July 11-12. The camp application is available on our website - share it with your Cloverbud members! Lastly, the Winne-bago County Fair will be here soon. Some preliminary background items are already in the planning. Think about ways you can volunteer at the Fair! -Sarah, Educator

The past few months have provided excellent outreach experiences! I taught at Tech Savvy, which promotes STEM careers to female students - and even saw some 4-H members there! I continue to get to know Winnebago County better, and the chance to speak at the Omro Farm-City Dinner was a fantastic opportunity to meet even more 4-H families and those who support our program! I’m always interested in events like this, so please send me an invite for your club or community activities. A focus right now is preparing for 4-H summer camp, which includes meeting with our camp counselors and staff on a regular basis! A few of our camp staff members learned a lot by going to Upham Woods for statewide counselor training, and I even taught 4-H Yoga! Another focus in the past two months, and continuing, is supporting our 4-H volunteer leaders - thank you for all you do! A successful project leader meeting resulted in new ideas that are shared in “Volunteer Corner!” -Kayla, Educator

4-H Events and Reminders

Upcoming Board of Directors Meeting The next meetings are Tuesday, May 17, and Tuesday, June 21, at

7:00 PM at JPCC. To add an item to the agenda, please contact Patsy Beck, 4-H Leaders Association President, with any additions at least one week in advance of the meeting at [email protected]

LEGO Club Our last LEGO Club of the school year is scheduled for Monday, May 16, 6:00-7:30 PM at the JPCC. Come join the fun as we build, explore, program and learn about Lego robotics using the WeDo and NXT Mindstorm programs. There is no need to be a 4-H member or to register for this event. Look for more information about new and exciting LEGO programs and how robotics is used in the “real world”

Lego Robotics, STEM, After School Are you looking for a way to use your leadership skills and to promote 4-H in a new way? We are looking for youth and adult volunteers to help implement, lead and teach STEM programs in the After School setting. Currently, our LEGO robotics kits are getting a workout in the schools, but the STEM possibilities are amazing….space flight, plants, animals, agriculture, earth and the environment, electricity and so much more. If you are interested in learning how you can help lead programs, please contact Sarah.

Updates to Record Books - Now Available Online! Record books are highly encouraged to be completed by all 4-H members during their years in 4-H. In some clubs, this is a requirement. Record books help members keep accurate records of their project work, reflect on what they’ve learned, and create memories from their 4-H membership. They also have potential to be recognized at club and county levels. Please encourage your 4-H members to start their record books early and add to them through-out the year! NEW! Visit http://winnebago.uwex.edu/4-h-record-book-forms/ (a new location for record book pages!) where you can view, save, and print PDF and Word Document versions of ALL record book pages! This year, content changes took place on the “Record Book Main Pages” and a brand new Cloverbud Book was created!

Did you participate in other activities available around the farm? How would you and your club like to run an educational booth this year? The Winneba-go County Farm Bureau is making money (up to $500) available for 4-H Clubs and FFA Chapters to create and run educational booths at the breakfast and at the Fair. Teen Winter Camp– a recap from campers! This article was taken from articles submitted by teens that attended camp in February. This past February, 18 youth from both Winnebago and Outagamie County attended a Winter Camp at Upham Woods in Wisconsin Dells. The first night, we went on a snowshoe hike to learn more about using the five senses at night including night vision in the woods. Another activity was team building to get to know each other. We also learned survival skills which were later tested out by building a shelter with only rope and natural resources. We learned different leadership aspects to take back to our club and community and even used DOTS kits, which stands for Digital Observation Technology Skills. We ended with a campfire that bonded us together, creating memories we will never forget. Everyone who came strived to become a better leader then they were previously. We had a lot of fun and met a lot of new people! This camp is available to any youth ages 13-18. We hope to see you next year!

Project Leader Meeting Outcomes Thank you to over 20 leaders who attended this event on March 30 to learn more about teaching methods for 4-H projects, how to bring in new ideas to 4-H clubs, and share valuable insight of what “best practices” have worked in their projects. Here are some of the great tips that came from the leaders at this meeting: Ask older youth to share a project that they have been involved

with. Maybe they can do this as their demonstration to your club. Invite guest speakers or presenters to help teach content of a 4-H

project. Ask the members what they want to learn about, and see where

you can find those resources - through other leaders, members, local businesses, or contacting the UWEX office!

Make a plan for the 4-H project - how many meetings will you hold? Where will they be held? What will happen at each meeting?

Volunteer of the Month We continue to seek 4-H volunteers to highlight for their service each and every month. To nominate a 4-H Volunteer of the Month, send an email to Kayla with the name of a leader and a brief description of their recent volunteer service! Help us recognize our leaders each month for their service and commitment to our 4-H program! Want to Access a List of 4-H Project Members From Your Own Computer? This was discussed at the Project Leader Meeting, and if you are registered as a project leader through 4honline, here are your steps to obtain lists of club members and countywide members in the project(s) you lead! Go to 4honline to confirm you are an enrolled 4-H leader in the

projects you are interested in leading. Contact Michelle at the office by calling 920-232-1974 or emailing

[email protected]. Let her know the project(s) you would like access to.

Michelle can grant access to a club-only list, or whole county of members enrolled in that project, with their name, email, and phone number.

You will receive a password from Michelle that you will use on 4honline to access those lists.

On your next login to 4honline, you will be able to find those project member lists and begin contacting members!

Hi everyone! Summer will be here before we know it and there are a lot of things coming up. Are you ready? First things first, there will be a mandatory meeting on Sunday, May 22 at 1:30 pm. We are requiring at least one representative from each club with active dairy members be present. This meeting will cover details about the dairy show and the futurity show at the fair. Committee members will be present to answer any other questions you have about the dairy project. It is important that we have club representatives there because there will be a lot of information covered! Don’t forget to sign up for Dairy Day happening on Sunday, June 26, at 1:30 pm at the Szep Farm in Omro. This year will include new stations and new activities. There will also be snacks and door prizes! Registration is now open. Please call Michelle at the Extension Office at 920-232-1970. Get signed up and come ready to have some fun with the cows! We will also have a Tack Sale/Exchange available that day to those who would like to pass on or sell gently used show clothes, show halters, and other tack items. You can sell, trade, give away or get your hands on hard to find items you need for the dairy show. Area Animal Science Days is coming up on June 28, in Outagamie County. Check out the link for more detailed information, https://fyi.uwex.edu/wi4haganimalscience/files/2014/06/AASD-Registration-Packet-2016.pdf. Our Quiz Bowl and Dairy Judging Coach, Amy Jo Domke, is looking for youth interested in participating in Showmanship, dairy judging and poster contests at this event. Please call or email her at: 920-379-3251 or [email protected]. Calf Corner poster assignments have been emailed out to dairy clubs. Take a look at the requirements again as you get started on your posters. The poster topic assignments are also listed below. Remember this is an optional activity, however, clubs that participate will be presented with a $35 stipend sponsored by Farm Bureau.

Horse & Pony Project

Reminder to all members to be filling out your achievement books. If you still need them, please contact a board member or the extension office. It is also a requirement to attend two horse and pony meetings. We only have three left before fair: May 23, June 27, and July 25. They are held at the Coughlin Center at 7:00 pm A huge thank you goes out to everyone who helped in any way to make the tack sale a huge success!! It was successful because of everyone working together. We were able to raise money at the admissions table that the Horse & Pony club has voted to donate to 4-H camp counselors and campers. Thank you to Vince Panfil, who was the chairperson for the tack sale. He did an excellent job and has laid an excellent foundation for someone to take over this task. He will be stepping down as chairperson, so if you or anyone you know would like to take on this role, please let a board member know ASAP. Vince is willing to guide the new chairperson and help them this year. Reminder to all high school seniors to be watching the mail, email, and Facebook for scholarship information. Good luck to our horse bowl team! Competition is in Wausau on May 7, 2016. They have put in countless hours to prepare. Give them your support! Horse show season is here! Don't forget you will need a current calendar year coggins for all shows and clinics and open rides that you bring your horse to. You need to show the original and turn in a copy at most events.

Paula Lehrer, Poultry Superintendent [email protected], 920-858-8277 (no voice mail) An SOP is available for review. Spring is a busy time here on the farm. I check email in the morning and after dark. Please direct all and any questions to me. If you use a third-party, the risk is run of the email being lost or delayed in getting answered. All birds MUST be pullorum tested to be shown. What is required for pullorum testing: All birds being single bird tested must have a permanent numbered

leg/wing band (no cable ties, removable snap rings or numbered colored coils) as required by the state at the time of testing i.e. arrive with the permanent leg band on the bird(s). The tester will not have leg or wing bands at the test site. Do not arrive without one. No testing can be done without that ID band.

Any poultry coming to the fair (with the exception of Pigeons, broilers and roasters) must be blood tested

Birds must be 4 months old or older to be blood bird tested A full flock Pullorum Test can be done at any time and includes birds

under the 4 month age limit, hatching eggs, chicks, started chicks. A full flock test will be done at your farm/home/acreage, no ID bands

needed

Single bird testing will be done at my home by appointment only, 24 hour or more advanced notice. A calendar has been started

All birds will need to be 4 months of age by the July 15. The ONLY exception to this is Broilers and Roasters.

Make sure you have a premise ID number and have it with you, or you can not be tested (http://datcp.wi.gov/Animals/Premises_Registration/) If you were full flock tested last year, your test will expire on June 30, 2016, please renew before that time. ALL testing will be done by the current Superintendent to avoid any mis-handled tests and a general health check will be done at that time. A single bird test is good for 90 days, a full flock test is good for 1 full year. It is the same test just different paperwork The last day of testing will be July 15, 2016, don’t wait till the last minute. All poultry members will get a copy of pricing/requirements for blood- test-ing by email. If your email is not current with the county, please update it and send it to me. If you don’t have an active email account or do not check your account, please call and I will give you the information. If you are not in the poultry project and you need a pricing schedule– please email me and I will send you one. The advantages to full flock testing over single bird testing: With a full flock test, you will not need to transport your bird to the test

site, the tester comes to you You will not need to get a permanent Leg/Wing band ID’s on your birds

before they are tested If your first choice bird decides to molt, gets killed by a predator, get

beaten up, or in some way is not showable, you can just choose a different bird from your flock. If you did a single bird test, you will need to get another test. This has to be done before July 15

If you decided to go to a different show later in the year, your testing is already done with the full flock testing! If you did a single bird test and are past the 90 day limit, you will need to test again before you can register for the next show

I have showmanship manuals for those new to poultry showmanship, or those who need a refresher. Let me know if you would like one. For those who are new or not so new to poultry- I’m here to help! I will show you how to: hold your bird, washing, care, how to check for egg laying, and any other questions, concerns or breed questions. Contact me with any and all questions, including care, show prep, and

general information, I’m here to help you get the best out of your chicken project!

Rabbit and Poultry Cage Sale Thank You to all who have supported our Winnebago County 4-H Fur & Feather Cage Project to purchase new rabbit and poultry cages for the fair! Donations continue to be greatly appreciated as we strive to reach our fundraising goal before June 1st. Donors of $50 and more will be recognized on a plaque that will be displayed in the poultry/rabbit barn during the fair. Our current rabbit and poultry cages, trestle stands and cage bottoms will be offered for sale on Saturday, May 7th from 10:00 am-noon at the new storage building on the north end of the fairgrounds, past the Expo building and the open arena. No early sales. Each double cage is $20 and will include a bottom and trestles if desired. There are approximately 100 cages but fewer bottoms and trestles. Bottoms and trestles will be available until they are gone. Buyers are reminded that this equipment is 25 years old and the wire cages and trestles may have rust and/or broken welds and/or bent wires and the wood cage bottoms exhibit deterioration. Cages, trestles and bottoms will be sold as is and in the order they come off the storage racks until all are sold. There will be no limit to the number of cages a buyer may purchase. Cages, trestles and bottoms must be paid for, loaded and hauled immediately. We will accept cash or checks made payable to Winnebago County Fair Association (WCFA).
