It Seems to Me:

When taking a few moments to compose this letter to our members, I became overwhelmed with the enormous number of “points” I wanted to make. All of them seemed to be important. These extended from the full list of calendared Dallas Scottish Rite events which are upon us, to a review of our recently fin-ished Fall Reunion, to our just held inaugural Scottish Rite sporting clay event, to the utterly fantastic Education evening in October, to the initiation of our

Henderson Ancillary Lodge of Perfection, to various changes in Degree Masters, and on and on.

My brothers all: The most important communication that I can offer is that of Thanksgiving! Therefore, may we all:

Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.

Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.

Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise: be thankful unto Him, and bless His name. For the LORD is good; His mercy is everlasting; and His truth endureth to all generations.

So Mote it be.Psalms 100.

Buck

The Dallas Scottish Rite recently hosted an evening event for the Federal Bureau of Investiga-tion. Through the efforts of our Prelate & Chancellor of the Dallas Consistory, Bro. Larry E. Hopkins 32º KCCH, who is also member of the FBI’s fall 2014 Citizens Academy class, the Valley of Dallas’s was selected to host the event this year. This is the 2nd occasion we have

been selected and we are very delighted to do so. Coordinator Ms. Angela D. Harris is the special agent respon-sible for this part of the FBI’s Community interaction efforts. The evening’s speaker was the Special Agent in charge (SAC) of the Dallas field office, Diego Rodriquez who spoke to the class.

Greetings to all Dallas Scottish Rite Masons and friends as we close out a very ac-tive 2014. Your Valley has been busy all year with stated meetings, special events, Feasts, Celebrations and our very own Robert Burns Birthday party! We have

welcomed new 32º Masters of the Royal Secret into our fraternity again this year and just as importantly, we welcome back members who have returned to participate in 2014 – thank you all for being active and being a part of the Dallas Valley. In 2014 we conducted two full 3-day reunions, plus our annual one-day summer reunion event. In 2015 we will hold only the Spring & Fall reunions (no summer 1 day). The reason is that the fall 2015 reunion will be the Dallas Valley’s 400th reunion. You can expect big happenings from your Valley for this great event in our history. We are delighted to have many new 32nd degree masons now taking part in various degree teams! This is truly the way to get involved with the Scottish Rite.We continue our outreach programs in the community and have hosted many groups in our facility. This al-lows more people to know and appreciate our beautiful building while learning more about the Masonic Fra-ternity. Some of these groups are: North Texas Crime Commission, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Dallas County Sheriff’s new officer graduation, and many more local Farmers Market Groups. Our continuing goal is to carry the message of Scottish Rite well beyond this facility. Your Valley continues our program to contribute police bicycles to agencies that protect and serve our com-munities. Bikes were awarded to the Dallas County Security agency and Grapevine Police Departments this year (see their story inside.)Last spring the Texas Our Texas celebration was a large success and we have an even larger event scheduled for next spring as Texans recognize the 150th anniversary of the war between the states. We will have ex-hibits, artifacts, and speakers as we honor the Texans who fought in this conflict. Reserve April 25, 2015 on your calendar now – you will want to be here.

The Dallas Scottish Rite – In Conjunction with Northern Star #377, hosted the North Texas Crime Commission’s Fall Meeting. Master of Ceremonies Brother Harold Collum 32o KCCH, served as moderator for their Panel of North Texas Members.

The North Texas Crime Commission (formerly the Greater Dallas Crime Commission) was established in 1950. Its belief is that proper enforcement and enlightened prevention can be achieved through a comprehensive and cooperative effort involving concerned citizens and law enforcement.

The NTCC also provides a forum for the exchange of information between local law enforcement and federal agencies such as the FBI, ATF, DEA, HEA, IRS, TSA, TEXOMA HIDTA and the U.S. Marshals.

ReunionNo.397HonoringBrotherWilliamLutherBerryman,33o

(July 19, 2014)

Illustrious William Luther “Bill” Berryman Jr. was known by all brother masons as a friendly and talented musician and a wonderful thespian. Full of wit, Bill was always ready for the opportunity to add a funny response.

A kind smile was his biggest asset.

The fraternity was one of his biggest loves.

Bill began his Scottish Rite career at the Valley of Guthrie, in January 1944, where he became as Master of the Royal Secret. He affiliated with the Valley of Dallas in 1954, and he immedi-ately became involved at every opportunity. Bill served on the 10th, 14th, 18th, and the 30th degrees always performing the most demanding of roles. He served as a member of the Valley Rose Croix funeral team and was Wise Master of the Chapter of Rose Croix.

Importantly, Bill became a charter member of Sam P. Cochran Lodge No. 1335 in 1952, and he received his 65 year pin just prior to his death in 2013.

In 1956, Jack become a Mason, he was initiated on May 15th, 1956. He was passed on the 29th of June, 1956. He was raised on the 31st of July, 1956. Jack was immediately appointed Junior Steward of Garland Lodge No. 441. He would serve in every chair with the exception of Junior Deacon. He was elected Master of Garland Lodge No. 441 in June 1963. In addition to serving as Master of Garland Lodge, he also served twice as Worthy Patron of Garland OES Chapter 156. He served on the advisory board of Garland DeMolay and was awarded the Legion of Honor. He served as Chairman of the Rainbow Board and donned the Cross of Color. He was a founding mem-

ber of Duck Creek Lodge No. 1419 and served as the inaugural Master. In 1977 he served as District Deputy of Masonic District No. 14-E. In 1991 he served as District Masonic Relations Officer for Masonic District 14-C. He served as High Priest and Thrice Illustrious Master in York Rite. In the Scottish Rite he was Invested as a Knight Commander of the Court of Honour on Oct 17th 1977 and was made a 33° Inspector General Honorary on December 2nd 1989. He served as a Director of Work for the Valley of Dallas and was the Venerable Master of Kadosh in 2000.Jack was instrumental in creating the well known Garland Scottish Rite Fish Fry program. To date, the Garland Scottish Rite Club has assisted 256 students with scholarships totaling $196,000. He also helped adopt Grand Lodge’s Together Against Drugs program in Garland ISD. In his long and distinguished Masonic career, one program stands above the rest. In the late 1980s, Jack ap-proached the Scottish Rite Hospital and asked how he could be of service. The answer was simple: “We need blood.” Through the Garland Scottish Rite Club, Jack organized his first blood drive. In 1992 he decided to ex-pand the program to include all of Garland’s Masonic Bodies. The results were twenty times greater than 1991. By 1993 all fifty Lodges in Dallas County were participating in the program. By 1995, with the help of RW Joe Regian, the Gift of Life Program had expanded statewide. He personally donated over 65 gallons of blood to the Gift of Life. The Garland Masonic Bodies themselves now collect nearly 1000 units annually.

Royal Order of the Duck by Jeff Haven - R.O.D Banquet 2014

What the heck is R.O.D.? Well, the R.O.D is the Stage Crew "Royal Order of the Duck." Anyone who serves for a certain period of time, is dedicated to helping out with the Stage Crew by providing support can and will be hatched into the Grand Flight. In fact, the Grand Flight and the Royal Order of the Duck were created right here in the Valley of Dallas, Orient of Texas many years ago.On March 21, 2014, the Royal Order of the Duck Grand Flight held a hatching and produced 17 new duck-lings. They are; SGIG Douglas Adkins, Kevin Berry, Allen Carline, Gordon Carline, Marty Dotson, Ian Griffin, Jeff Haven, Bryant Hicks, Scott Hill, Chairman Buck Howard, Stephen Kadry, General Secretary Jerry Mc-Nair, Johnny Roberson, Patrick Throop, Michael Walker, John Wilkerson and Jim Ziemba. Each new duck was presented a beautify 13x17 autographed membership certificate with signatures from Grand Flight Commander, Grand Flight Leader, Grand Quacker, Grand Hatcher, Ancient Highflying Bird and Grand Quill Driver. Guest Speaker for the evening was our own R\W\ GSW Ill. Wendell P. Miller who gave a short talk about the Orange Men from Ireland. It was a very informative talk with similarities between our fraternity and the Orange Men. (This is not the same University of Syracuse Orange Men you may be thinking about.) The Valley of Dallas is fortunate to have so many competent and experience committees in the three annual Reunions. One of these vital groups is the Stage Crew Committee. Volunteers are the lifeblood of all Masonic Organization and the Scottish Rite is no exception. The Director of the Stage Crew is Ill\ James C. Murray, 330. Brother Murray is supported by two assistant directors. There are also six (6) operating sections: Electrical Board (Now Lighting and Sound), Flys, Special Effects, Property, and the Floor and Alter. The electrical board crew in the past controlled the spotlights, the lighting on the stage and in the auditorium. They also controlled the sound effects of thunder, lighting, wind and cannon. With renovations in the early 2002, this crew broke up into two separate crews now Lighting and Sound committees. The lighting crew is lead by Ill\ Mike Posey, 330 and Ill\ Bob Wilson, 330. The Sound Committee is lead by Bryant Hicks, 320. The Fly crew handles the scenery drops, which make up the principle scenery for the degrees. The Property Crew handles all the portable stage props and flats, pedestal, chairs, and any movable scenery. The Floor and Alter Crew handles all the regalia and accent pieces placed on the alter and elsewhere about the auditorium and any special equipment required by each degree team for presentation of their degree. The special effects crew handles and sets up all the support equipment and furniture requiring lighting and elecial support. This special group is lead by Derek Z. Gracy, 330 Special Effects Director. A special thanks goes out to all of our Emeritus Members of the various Stage Crew committees, without the dedication and commitment to these members, the unique knowledge would not have been possible to share and mentor our younger members. Please congratulate and extend a big thank you to: Ill\ Eddie J. Baker, 330, Ill\ David U. Jones, 330, Ill\ John S. Cox, 330, Ill\ Charles T. Brodnaux, 330.The Stage Crew needs new members; This is a unique group of men who work behind the scenes to make it all happen. They form a great bond of friendship and fellowship in the San Hedrin room between degrees. Stop by and say hello, but most importantly, thank them for their service so the new candidates can have a memo-rable experience. These faithful volunteers are a necessary part of the degree presentation. In 2013, we had over 350 members participate at all levels putting on degrees, wardrobe, stage, sound & lighting, registration, class, auditorium, bus boys, jewelry, coffee, chefs, plus KOSA.

23

At the end of 2013, the Valley of Fort Scott Scottish Rite (Fort Scott, Kansas) closed the doors on the building they have resided in since 1926. Due to declining numbers of members and increasing costs for upkeep, it became neces-sary to leave their beloved home. They will now be housed at the Pittsburg Masonic Lodge in Pittsburg, KS.

Because of the move, an auction was organized to sell the fixtures and furnishings. Items included in this auction were historic items, costumes, set drops, furniture and 16 tables worth of Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite China. The china was to be auctioned off in lots of 10 to 55 items. Total number of pieces neared 8,000. This china is code dated to 1908 and is from the Onondaga Pottery Company (now Syracuse China) in Syracuse, New York.

When Brother Nicholas J. Quarm, 32º KCCH of the Valley of El Paso heard of the impending auctions he was sad-dened to think of the furniture and fixtures of such a beloved place, being sold off. Perhaps, he could rescue just a couple of items?

Through a series of very fortunate events and with the assistance of some extremely helpful people, Brother Quarm not only rescued a couple of items, but the china in its entirety. Now he is distributing the plates where he feels they will do the most good for the fraternity. Starting with the House of the Temple in Washington, D.C. Then two hun-dred sets are going to his Valley’s dining room (El Paso Scottish Rite) for use at events such as the Feast of Tishri and Reunions. Those remaining are being offered to Masonic Museums, especially Scottish Rite Museums. Some will be put aside for presentation to notable Scottish Rite Brethren, and finally a few sets will be sold off to help recover the expenses.

We have been fortunate in that Brother Quarm has graciously donated a set of this China to the Dallas Scottish Rite for display within the Library Museum.

26 miles of bike paths and in over 228 acres of Parks in the City of Grapevine. The Grapevine Police Department also uses bikes to patrol the historic Downtown Grapevine area in conjunction with vehicle patrols. With a strong Community oriented Policing policy this will allow more Of-ficers to use these bikes in Community activities. Pictured (L to R) Officer Chad Hale, Venerable Master Richard L. Recently we participated in the clay shoot benefitting the Scottish Rite Hospital. We had 16 Dallas Scot-tish Rite shooters. For those interested in pistol and/or rifle shooting, we need some help in getting these started. For more information, call me.Mark Travis, 972-203-8684.

The Correct Position During Scottish Rite Prayer

Predicated upon its basic foundation of belief in a personal God, the Scottish Rite gives primary importance in its Degrees and at its meetings to prayer. While there is an established position and sign to be used by all Scot-tish Rite Masons during prayer, this position and sign are sometimes not uniformly practiced.

All Scottish Rite Masons (except when engaged in ritual at the altar) stand during prayer, with caps re-maining on the head as part of a uniform. What is also required is giving the accompanying “Sign of the Good Shepherd.” This is done by folding the arms, the left over the right. with the outstretched fingers touching the shoulders. The position is com-fortable and easily remembered if it is realized that the sign represents the Good Shepherd carrying a lamb around his neck and holding its feet by crossed hands.During prayer, in this position the head is slightly bowed. The practice of this prayer position and sign, will add much to the meaningfulness of our devotion.
