WINTER SAFETY & SERVICES

Did you get a live Christmas tree this year? Don’t toss it to the curb where it will end up in a landfill –RECYCLE YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE!. Allegheny County Department of Parks Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program. Drop-offs will be accepted through Saturday, January 16th, dusk to dawn, at all nine county parks, including: Boyce, Deer Lakes, Harrison Hills, Hartwood Acres, North Park, Round Hill, Settler’s Cabin, South Park and White Oak. All lights and tinsel must be removed from tree prior to drop-off.

Winter driving can be hazardous – Know the three “P’s” of Winter Driving

PREPARE for the trip: • MAINTAIN YOUR CAR - Check the battery, tire tread, and windshield wipers. Keep your

windows clear; keep washer and antifreeze reservoirs full. • HAVE ON HAND – Flashlight, jumper cables, shovel, snow brush, ice scraper, warning

devices (like flares) and traction materials (sand, kitty litter or floor mats). Don’t forget your cell phone!

• PLAN YOUR ROUTE – Leave early, know your route and directions. • STOPPED OR STALLED? – Stay in your car, don’t overexert and put bright markers on

your car’s antenna or windows. Run your car just enough to stay warm and keep the exhaust pipe clear!

• PRACTICE COLD WEATHER DRIVING – Steer into a skid and know your breaks.

PROTECT yourself: • Wear your seatbelt and use child safety seats correctly. • Children 12 and under are much safer in the backseat.

PREVENT crashes:

• Slow down and increase distance between cars. • Allow at least 100 feet or 5 car lengths when traveling behind a snow plow. • Never pass a snowplow during salting or plowing operations! • Watch for pedestrians walking in the roadway. • Don’t drive when tired. • Drugs and alcohol never mix with driving.

CHRISTMAS TREE RECYCLING

COLD WEATHER WATER TIPS

Disconnect all outdoor

hoses from faucets. Close all windows and

garage doors near water pipes.

Insulate or wrap all pipes and faucets in unheated areas; including: garages and crawl spaces, under open porches, and cabinets against an unheated outside wall.

Check now to find your master shut-off valve and test it to make sure you can shut-off water if a pipe leaks.

If you have a pipe prone to freezing during severe cold weather, let the water in the affected pipe run about half the diameter of a wooden pencil.

Keep the number of a reliable plumber with your emergency contacts.

WATER CONSERVATION Although we are surrounded by water, most of it is not drinkable. Only 3% of the world’s water is fresh, and 96% of fresh water is stored in ice and glaciers. That leaves only 1% of the world’s water available for drinking! You can take steps to conserve and protect water and save money too! Here are some ways to MAKE EVERY DROP COUNT!

‘ Verify that your home is leak free. Read your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter moves, there is a leak.

‘ Repair dripping faucets by replacing washers. One drip per second wastes 2,700 gallons of water per year.

‘ Check for toilet tank leaks by adding food coloring to the tank. If the color appears in the bowl within 30 minutes, you have a leak. Be sure to flush after the test is done to prevent toilet tank stains.

‘ Take shorter showers. Replace your showerhead with an ultra-low-flow version.

‘ Don’t let water run while shaving or washing your face. Brush teeth first while waiting for hot water then fill the basin to wash or shave.

‘ Take shorter showers and replace your shower head with an ultra-low-flow head.

‘ When washing dishes by hand, fill one sink basin with soapy water and quickly rinse

2017 WATER, SEWER AND GARBAGE BILLING BASICS

Combined water, sanitary sewage and garbage bills are mailed to all residential customers on a quarterly basis.

Full payment is due 15 days after the date on your bill. Failure to pay in 15 days results in a past due notice that

includes a 5% penalty. Accounts 30 days past due will receive a written shut-off

notice. Customers who fail to response within 10 days of the date

of the shut-off notice by making payment in full will have their water service shut-off.

A $75.00 fee will be assessed to restore water service and a customer must be present to reconnect service.
