Welcome to RHS Garden Rosemoor’s Winter Sculpture Exhibition 2016/17

Now a regular feature, the Winter Sculpture Exhibition has continued to grow and now attracts over twenty thousand visitors. Rosemoor curates the exhibition and employs a variety of methods to source it’s participating sculptors: some are found whilst visiting other gardens and exhibitions locally, others can be recommended by the current artists but often desk research

too can yield wonderful results. However some of the most remarkable sculptors and their works have simply been drawn to the exhibition on their own.

The gardens in winter are the perfect backdrop for the sculptures. As the foliage turns and falls the garden appears quite differently with structural elements being more evident. Sculptures are placed in and around the garden in such a way that the pieces complement and enhance their setting. Essential elements of the pieces, their tone, message or even material construction are extracted and echoed in the immediate environment in which they are placed. We like to site the sculptures in such a way that the observer is confronted, and even sometimes challenged, by these material statements.

The quality of winter light in the garden is also an important consideration when looking for the ideal location. The low winter sun or the effects of adverse weather and early darkness can be used to advantage in dramatically highlighting the sculptures. This year a number of the peices feature within our brand new Win-ter Garden Illuminations and can show the art in a totally different light.

Most of our sculptures are available to purchase or can be made to commission. These individual creations can be yours to own and used to enhance your own home or garden in dramatic and exciting ways. If you would like to know more about the sculptures and their creators join a free guided walk which leaves from the Courtyard at 11.30am on most Wednesdays during the Exhibition.

Colin has lived and worked all his life in the heart of the industrial West Midlands, better known as the Black Country. Now living in Cornwall. His preferred medium being steel, using its natural flexibility and constraints, he produces these truly unique sculptures. Taking his inspiration from nature and its powerful elements, Colin focuses very heavily on both balance and movement within his sculpture. Each unique piece is both visually attractive and mentally stimulating. Colin hopes you enjoy his work as this is the reason for its creation.

Liz’s main inspiration is drawn from nature, history and mythology. All sculpture work starts with drawings then moves to clay work. From there she makes moulds to produce casts that enable her to create sculptures from natural sources, i.e. slate, marble composities. Liz makes very limited editions of each work usually between 5 and 12 copies, sometimes only one! Her work is ideal for showing in the garden or somewhere special in your home.

Adrian was drawn from an early age to letter forms and the way the outer and inner curves and spaces relate to and interact with each other giving grace to the overall figure. He came to understand that these relationships exist everywhere and was eventually drawn to clay because it is so malleable. He explores organic forms in the vessels he makes – defining inner and outer space and exploring the relationship between them. He is influenced by the primal forms contained inside other ‘vessels’ – human, plant and animal forms – all ‘vessels’ containing life and defined by their interaction with the world around them. Simon is a North Devon artist living locally for over 50 years. Although he has always been a painter it is only since being inspired by Rosemoor’s Sculpture Exhibition in 2012/13 that he has moved into sculpting. Drawing from nature for inspiration, the life size sculptures capture and create original and unique designs. The sculptures are hand crafted from recycled mild steel. All sculptures are then lacquered for protection, whilst allowing a natural weathering process.

Dan studied Fine Art Sculpture at Loughborough University, gaining a first class honours degree in 2001. Since then has worked as a stone sculptor and a technician before deciding to carve wood full time in 2003. Stephanie came to art as a mature student, training as a ceramicist but has beenworking as a sculptor and stone carver for 10 years. Her work is mostly abstract, concentrating on shape and form, taking inspiration from natural forms, in particular the sensuous shapes of seeds and fruits. She likes to respond to the material she is working with and recent works in marble are an exploration of the fluidity of the material. Her aim is to make this rigid but beautiful material appear malleable and pliable, as if it has been gently coaxed and twisted into shape.’

NEWRoger DaviesBorn in Derbyshire in 1958, Roger grew up in Derby and Burton on Trent Staffordshire. He had a keen eye for drawing and making models from a young age and later showed an interest in making objects in metals. Now based in the Midlands after 9 years in the south west, his work usually depicts wild life and in particular sea life, making works such as turtles and whale tails. His later works have included stags and star fish.

Karen’s sculptures are individually made in stoneware, using handbuilding techniques of coiling, slabbing, pinching and carving. This means that no two pieces will be identical. The natural colouring and strong forms are designed to complement any garden, from traditional to modern, and are equally suitable for enjoyment inside the home. Karen’s interest in plants and enjoyment of the landscape around her Somerset home has a bearing on her work. Ptolemy ElringtonPtolemy has always liked the creative process. He studied art and design in Bradford in the eighties and was very fortunate in earlier life to have parents who encouraged him whenever he made or drew something. Now he runs his own business making sculptures out of recycled materials. He finds the various shapes of the raw materials mentally stimulating, and the use materials he discovers opens up a dialogue about recycling, re-designing and the value of nature. He mostly makes animals; fish and birds because nature has always drawn his eye and this subject seems to suit him.

Ash Tree Pottery was set up in 1995 by Rowan Fawdon and her husband Neil. Whilst Rowan is the potter, Neil handles the great diversity of other requirements of a business from administration to electrics, and a ready supply of tea and constructive criticism! Rowan’s interest in ceramics arose as a pre-school child, having a handy supply of clay in her parent’s garden. The opportunity to take ceramics as an exam subject at school introduced her to throwing. After obtaining a degree in multi-disciplinary design back in the 80’s Woody became a children’s illustrator. Around 12 years ago he went on a one day willow sculpting course and fell in love with this material. The flow and weave that only willow can provide is just beautiful, enabling the creation of muscle tone and textures in his sculptures.All outdoor sculptures are made on a steel frame with the rods having enough extra on the bottom of the legs to go into the ground of the garden/park etc. to create a firm and secure footing. Then the willow is woven into the frame and over it to become as dense as possible making muscle tone shine through. Woody works mainly to commission so that each sculpture is unique.

Paul has been sculpting since the age of ten, has sold work to the Royal family and has exhibited at the Chelsea Flower Show. His studio is set in the Hampshire countryside, on the edge of a pond, which has been developed over time into a small nature reserve. This has encouraged many of the birds he sculpts to show themselves in their true and natural light. Birds were an interest from an early age, having kept many species in aviaries, he was keen to carve them in wood. However, birds with their delicate features didn’t lend themselves to wood carving, so the design had to be simplified, a style that combined with his other great interest Art Deco and this forms the basis of his work today.

Renée’s artistic journey started in Sweden as a painter. It was only when she took her first pottery class that she realised what was missing. Glaze! Allan MackenzieAfter completing courses in Commercial Art and Graphic Design at the Worthing College of Art, Allan then pursued a career in construction. After no success with job hunting he was given a place at the Royal college of Art in London to study for a postgraduate degree in biological illustrating. However a job offer at the Natural History Museum in London could not be refused and Ned went on to publish on the Chrysididae Hymenoptera, illustrating his own work and that of other entomologists.While at the Natural History Museum, Ned took up woodcarving and used a variety of British woods and recycled foreign hardwoods. David NewmanDavid has always been interested in the arts and the natural world. He spent his working life as a GP and retired in 2007. He had painted and carved wood in the 1990’s. A course at Bawdsey Manor, Suffolk introduced him to stone carving and in 2008 he started a 3 year course in stone sculpture. Orchard Pottery is a small studio pottery – the partnership of Doreen Gardner and Tony Smither, in business since 1980. Doreen & Tony work predominately in ceramics, using most of the manufacturing processes available. These include coiling, press moulding, slip casting, throwing, extruding, and slab building. On many pieces two or more techniques are employed. Recently some sculptures have been produced in cold-cast bronze resin and foundry bronze. All of the ceramic pieces are frostproof stoneware so that they can all be safely used in the garden all year round.

Devon born sculptor Tess Wilmot interprets domestic and wild animals in cast stone. Following creative work in Europe in the 1980s and 90s, Tess returned to her roots, in the Erme Valley near Ivybridge, setting up her Riverside Studio in 1994. Using the colours of mainly local powdered stone as her palette, Tess creates tactile sculptures with realistic markings. Her distinctive method of bonding the natural coloured stone within each figure, rather than painting the colours on afterwards, results in an individual polished stone finish. The very popular Sunday Carvery is served between 12 noon and 3pm.
