Wire & Cables for the Nuclear Market

AMS Informal CRP Meeting on Cables

AMS Technology Center

Knoxville, TN, USA 2011-08-02

Habia have provided wire and cable solutions to the nuclear industry for over 25 years Our experience as a major supplier in the world enables us to use pioneering materials which are able to meet the majority of internationally recognised nuclear specifications

Wire & Cable Solutions for the Nuclear Market

Nuclear Application: Yonggwang 5 & 6

The first contract for ’new build’ was awarded to Habia Cable by KHNP after a successful LOCA test. Performed to the profile outlined by KEPCO and the IEEE323/1974 and IEEE 383/1974 specifications All special cables were supplied for the 600/1000v systems and were manufactured with the new thin wall, halogen free, reduced fire propagating materials

Halogen Free Materials & Specifications

Temperature rating: +135 C

Medium wall insulation

Halogen free

Low smoke/low flame propagation

Good chemical resistance

Used for power cores

IEEE 383/1974

IEEE 323/1974 HFI 150 Insulation of

polyetherimid

Temperature rating: +85 C, 40,000

hrs

Halogen free

Low smoke/low flame propagation

Good fluid/fuel resistance

IEEE 383/1974

IEEE 323/1974 HFS 105XL

Type B Jacket of

crosslinked

polyolefine

Temperature rating: - 200 to +260 C

Highly Radiation tolerant

Halogen free

Low smoke/low flame propagation

IEEE 383/1974

IEEE 323/1974 HFI 260 Insulation of

Polyaryelene

Material Specification Properties

Design Flexibility

Because Habia uses higher temperature rated insulation materials than standard nuclear approved cables, the wire will have a higher current rating

This means that in many cases the

system designer has the choice of reducing the wire size and hence the cable size, or increasing the current for the same wire size

Note: If the wire size is reduced this

will increase circuit resistance and hence increase volt drop

Benefits of Habia Cable’s Thin Wall Materials

XLPE/CSPE Cable

Diameter: 28mm

Weight: 950 kg/km

Temp Rating: 90deg.C

Habiatron Concept Cable

Diameter: 20 mm

Weight: 620 kg/km

Temp Rating: -40/+125deg.C

Typical example - 14 pair 0.75 sq.mm screened

35% weight reduction and 28% size reduction

New Nuclear Market Strategy

Habia´s Owner Beier Alma Group has decided to

work out a new strategy for Nuclear market during

Autumn 2011

But we have started with some qualification in

advance.

Step 1 Activation Energy

First step is to decide the Activation energy for 5 different

materials (Arrhenius method will be used).

–- PEEK

–- XLPE type 4

–- XLPE type 5

–- Megolon

–- Polyimide

Time Schedule: -Test programs are ready.

-Thermal Aging starts in September 2011

Step 2 Qualify for 60 years

Second step is to qualify cables

–Class 1e Cables •Thermo couple 90C (194 F)

•Coaxial Cable RG 58 90 C (194 F)

•Power cable 125C (257F)

–Non Class 1e Cables •UTP-cable (cat. 5e) 60C (140 F)

•Hydrogen Igniter Cable 90C (DBE)

Time Schedule: –Planned completion: Dec 2012.

–Test program not finnished

Step 3 Alternative

Compounds/Suppliers

Third step is to Evaluate alternative Compounds and

Suppliers

-Thermal Aging Internal at Habia are ongoing for most materials

Time Schedule: Not finished
