The Wireless Multimedia Forum

The Wireless Multimedia Forum (WMF) is: an international, multi-vendor forum and gathering point

for vendors developing products, services and information focused on the delivery of rich media content to an exploding number of mobile, wireless devices.

Established March 24, 2000

Why the WMF was established

WMF is an international industry alliance focused on establishing and growing the market for wireless multimedia products and services

WMF is NOT a standards body - Works in partnership with standards bodies

WMF is a “Meta Forum”, looking to “head off” damaging market fragmentation which can be created by multiple technologies or standards

Accelerate the adoption of open, interoperable standards for multimedia content delivery to wireless devices.

Stimulate demand for multimedia products and services over wireless networks around the world.

Provide a unified, industry gathering point for the global community (buyers and sellers) of wireless multimedia content delivery.

Working Group

Identifies business foundations and requirements across the value chain.

Especially focused on the business needs of operators, service providers and content providers.

Year 1 (2000) Focus: Streaming Media Year 2 (2001) Focus: Multimedia Messaging &

Incremental Streaming Media Functionality

Output: Application Requirements Documents

WMF Technical Working Group

Technical Working Group works on input from the Application Requirements Working Group.

Technical solutions for wireless multimedia typically need to include standards from multiple standards bodies e.g. IETF, MPEG, 3GPP2 etc

WMF technical publications reference standards and pull them together into a “framework”.

Makes use of existing standards. Where new functionality is required, work with appropriate

standards bodies.

Output: Recommended Technical Framework Documents
