is that Harry’s Library, home to various meetings and gatherings, will become Harry’s Café at Wirra Wirra.

We’re not talking a full service restaurant, but rather a comfortable setting for great coffee, light lunches and a lazy glass of wine. Just the thing to keep your wine tasting mojo in the zone during a day of touring in the Vale.

We’ll be taking our produce provenance very seriously and coffee even moreso. Luke Beare from our Cellar Door was known to locals as the gun McLaren Vale barista with Blessed Cheese on the main drag a few years back.

My guess is that the launch of the first space shuttle did not involve as much planning and research as Luke has been putting into coffee machines, beans and roasters.

This development will enable us to make much better use of this space and create an outdoor courtyard area for year round comfort.

The other part of Stage One involves the “Old Cellar Door” and foyer area which many of you will remember from Trott’s time. The foyer will become a meeting room like no other, to be offered to businesses, clubs and groups who wish to hold off-site sessions or planning days at Wirra Wirra. The Old Cellar Door will retain its original charm, but with a couple of modifications to make it one of the most interesting spaces for meetings and private tastings in the region.

Hopefully the Cellar Door and Café upgrade will be up and running by March next year. We are busy working with Council, architects, designers and engineers to try and make it happen. That’s probably the main difference between now and Trott’s build. We’re actually letting Council know about the renovations...

Stages Two, Three, Four – it depends on the funds (!) – are even more interesting and we hope to share those with you soon. Who knows, maybe sometime in the not too

Greg Trott would have turned 80 back in late September. I knew this because I bumped into Pip Forrester, McLaren Vale culinary legend a few days earlier and she said that a “few of them”, along with Greg’s daughter Emily, were going to drop by his Strout Rd resting place and have a glass of champagne with him as the sun rose. A simple act that said so much.

At the winery that morning, I called the Tribe together for a glass of Lost Watch Riesling – hey, it was at least 10am by then – spoke of Trott’s legacy and how he laid the groundwork that has enabled us to plan for the next phase of life at Wirra Wirra.

We then asked the newest member of the Tribe, Gonzalo who hails from Argentina, to ring our Angelus Bell 80 times! A couple of months later and I’m still not sure if he knows why he was hanging from a bell during morning tea, but he took to his task with enthusiasm and his ever-present smile.

I’ve been thinking about Trott a lot lately. As a dreamer who didn’t always see his visions come to fruition, I’ve often said that he left Wirra Wirra either pregnant with possibility or as a bottomless money pit – it just depends which view you wish to take. Or maybe which side of the bed I fell out of that morning.

In the coming months, visitors to our winery will see that we’ve decided to take a walk on the sunny side of the street. The glass of Church Block is not only half full, but it runneth over!

We have developed a masterplan – a word I like to roll off the tongue slowly with my pinky finger to my lip ala Dr. Evil from the Austin Powers movies – that will transform Wirra Wirra from the moment you enter the Woodhenge gates.

The plan will roll-out in stages and importantly be in keeping with the soul and spirit of Wirra Wirra.

We will kick things off with an upgrade of our Cellar Door area that will open up the space and make it more user friendly for staff and visitors. The biggest news here

distant future you will be able to spend the night at Wirra Wirra? Although that’s not an entirely new concept around here. Locals still talk of the Centenary Dinner which Trott held in 1994. A young Zar Brooks crashed out in the wee hours on the floor in Cellar Door and woke later that morning to witness the more “mature” crowd still in the throes of the previous evening’s activities.

Despite protestations to the contrary from Kermit the Frog (always a handy point of reference) it’s quite easy being green. In fact our efforts were recognized in October at the South Australian Wine Industry Association’s 175th Anniversary Dinner. Wirra Wirra was awarded the annual Environmental Excellence Award for the Small-Medium Business category. The award recognised our efforts in reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions for an energy efficiency project that included upgrades to refrigeration plant, pipework insulation, and the installation of a 100kW solar photovoltaic system. All up this has resulted in a 60% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions and annual savings of more than $49,000. That’ll pay for a few more barrels…and watermelons.

With Springtime in the vineyards comes all the excitement of the new season and the anticipation that the 2016 harvest is just around the corner. For our Vineyard Manager Richie it’s a time when the war begins – the war with weeds. Not unlike your tomatoes in their raised beds, our precious old vines need the utmost attention at this time to ensure they’re in the best possible shape to ripen our 2016 crop. With our strict organic and biodynamic practices (which restricts the use of herbicide) on the Nocowie and Scrubby Rise vineyards, Richie needs some magic up his sleeve to combat the summer grasses which thrive and compete for moisture and nutrients under our vines.

If you take a look in our Chook Shed, you’ll see it is filled with flow forms, drums of fermenting seaweed, silica crystals and cow horns – tools of the trade for the biodynamic farmer. Now we’ve made room for a new toy. It’s The Artful Dodger, otherwise known as a “dodge plough”. This undervine knife, operated with great precision by a foot pedal to move the blade in and out under the vines, is a great tool to cultivate the soil under our vines and keep them performing at their best.

Ashton Hills Update

Last time we were here, we mentioned our acquisition of Ashton Hills Vineyards, a tiny boutique producer in the Adelaide Hills of what some consider Australia’s finest pinot noir. We took control of the Cellar Door a couple of months back and in the first week of November, we settled on the winery and vineyards. Bell Ringers who attended our series of dinners over the winter had the pleasure of tasting the Ashton Hills Salmon Brut sparkling and the response was unanimously positive. A number of you have already dropped by to make yourself known to Matt and Kirby at the Cellar Door.

Stocks of Ashton Hills pinot noir from the ’14 vintage are miniscule – but we do hope to put out an offer to Bell Ringers before it is gone. For SA readers, the best bet is to visit the Cellar Door at Tregarthen Road which is open on weekends. Otherwise, shoot an email to [email protected] and we can send you a price list of what is available.

Previous owner and founder of Ashton Hills, Stephen George, was generous enough to let Smithy and our team make the 2015 Ashton Hills Riesling at Wirra Wirra this year. At its first “Show” outing it picked up a Gold medal at the Canberra International Riesling Challenge, so hopefully we are on the right track. Given there are just eight rows of riesling planted at Ashton Hills, you don’t want to waste a grape.

We Don’t Like Cricket, oh no, We Love It!We are very proud to announce that Wirra Wirra is the new wine partner for West End Redbacks and Adelaide Strikers, as part of a three year deal struck recently with the South Australian Cricket Association. Wirra Wirra’s cricket history stems back to 1894 when Robert Strangways Wigley (RSW) built the original winery. He was a former SA cricketer and friend of some of some of the famous names of his era, such as George Giffen who had a grandstand named after him at the Adelaide Oval. Greg Trott was a serious cricket buff, obsessed to the point that when he built his sandstone house next to the winery, the long hallway was set up as a cricket pitch with a popping crease at each end and stumps painted on the doors. Games of indoor cricket became a regular feature after a long lunch.

The fact that Trott was in his late sixties when the house was built, didn’t deter his enthusiasm for the indoor version of the game. Current Caretaker, AK is a complete cricket tragic and is very enthusiastic about the prospects of West End Redbacks future for the season ahead under new coach Jamie Siddons. Best not to engage him on the subject of cricket unless you have a comfortable seat handy. The Adelaide Strikers represent the new generation of KFC T20 Big Bash League and have been the hottest ticket in town over the past few summers, with sell-out crowds at the refurbished and revitalized Adelaide Oval. SACA Members can enjoy the Wirra Wirra Cellar Door at the Adelaide Oval during Strikers games with one of the best views of the stadium. We look forward to developing the partnership over the next few years and finding ways to include our Bell Ringers in on the fun.

The gadget is also known as a “silly plough”, as the slightest error and we’ll rip out posts, vines and irrigation – not to mention severely damaging Richie’s ego. But touch wood, we’re doing ok so far. Wander out on The Jetty next time you visit Wirra Wirra and keep an eye out for Richie and The Artful Dodger.

Mrs Wriggly?

When you live, work and play in a regional area of Australia, surrounded by vines, a creek and whopping great gum trees, there is a chance that you may be sharing this wonderland with the odd elongated, legless, carnivorous reptile of the suborder Serpente, better known as the snake.

A few years back both Richie and Shaun who work in our vineyards were bitten by a brown snake within a few weeks of each other. Their response to the bite told us a couple of things. Firstly, that snakes are not particularly fussy with their eating habits and will even bite New Zealanders (sorry, Rich) and secondly, that as a Tribe, we could all do with a bit of education on what we should do if we see a snake (surprisingly, the correct answer is neither scream and run, or smash it in half with a shovel), or have the misfortune to be bitten.

We recently had a revision session with Darren, a top notch snake-catcher who is working hard to remove the fear factor around these creatures. He reckons they get a bad rap and that from their spot on the ground, we look pretty scary to them. That’s if they see us. Aside from being deaf, the ol’ snake doesn’t see too well either. Fair to say that after a couple of hours with Darren we all felt a little clearer on how to handle a snakey situation, without necessarily being ready to invite one over for a glass of Church Block – or maybe that should be Hiding Champion? Mrs Wriggly??

With news of FTA (Free Trade Agreements) being warmly welcomed by our Asian trading partners and the Aussie dollar finally spending a bit of quality time in the low 70s vs the USD, we’ve been getting rather active in export markets. Since the new financial year kicked off, our Export man Sam has been to China, South Korea (not so keen on the Northern side), Japan, USA and Canada. Winemaker Smithy has released our flagships in the USA and AK has been pottering about Hong Kong and China. As a result, we have a few new places where you will be able to find our wines, or direct your overseas friends to hunt us down. Sam is pleased to announce that our wines are now available in Cambodia, South Korea and Japan.

We all know who the real boss is at Wirra Wirra. Delts is just letting the snake in on a few home truths.

Above: Wirra Wirra overlooks Hong Kong harbour and Below: AK’s suggestion of a new staff uniform fell on deaf ears.

Page 5: Wirra Wirra Vineyards | Bell Ringer Newsletter | November 2015

There’s been more than one occasion when upon finishing a Wirra Wirra tale about Trott’s adventures that we are met with a quizzical expression and the following, “Surely that can’t be true.” Well as AK is fond of saying – “We couldn’t make this stuff up.” During the month of October we had a visit to our cellar door from a delightful lady from WA, who we shall refer to as “Diane”. Mainly because that is her name. Anyway, Diane mentioned that she had previously visited us back in 1984 and had her photo taken with Mrs Wigley. Even our own staff had never seen photographic evidence to prove the existence of the moggy whose name graces our famous rosé and moscato. Upon her return to the West, Diane was kind enough to send us a copy of the pic and put all the doubters back in their place. (We’re looking at you, CJ)

JUST BETWEEN USThere are exciting plans ahead for our

winery site. Details will be divulged soon, but expect us to make our presence felt

in the world of wine tourism over the next couple of years.

Phase 1 will include a makeover of our Cellar Door and the introduction of an

onsite café, which if all goes to plan should be open for business around the close of

Summer. More to come…

After nearly 10 years in their current livery, our RGT collection is about to undergo a label facelift. The RGT collection honours the memory of Richard Gregory (Greg) Trott and the names relate to some of the more interesting stories surrounding his life. We’re talking The 12th Man; The Lost Watch; Hiding Champion; Woodhenge and Catapult. We’ve had requests from both our international and domestic markets to “clean these up a little” and highlight their name and provenance. Over the next 12 months, you will see them gradually change one by one as we roll vintage. The first to go is 2014 Woodhenge which will be released before Christmas. Look out for it!

‘Twas a time when we sold a sparkling wine from our Cellar Door by the name of The Cousins. It honoured the partnership between (Greg) Trott and his cousin Roger who helped rebuild Wirra Wirra back in 1969 from the ruins of the original Robert Strangways Wigley winery built in 1894.

In what will be good news for many Bell Ringers, The Cousins is back! This time around it is a Sparkling Pinot Noir, made from fruit sourced from one of the coolest blocks is in the Adelaide Hills.

It was made in the traditional champagne method and is a refreshing dry style, perfect for Summer celebrations.

The Cousins will be sold exclusively from our McLaren Vale Cellar Door and online, so you will not be able to buy it anywhere else than at Wirra Wirra.

You can pick your friends but you can’t…

Ch-ch-ch-changes

The AMATOR range of biodynamically grown single vineyard wines that we sell exclusively at our Cellar Door have been in the news lately. First up, the extremely cool label design created by the very talented Kellie Campbell-Illingworth at Parallax Design won a Silver Award from the Design Institute of Australia. Next, we learnt that the AMATOR 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon won GOLD at the McLaren Vale Wine Show. We are down to the last few cases of this cracking wine at our Cellar Door, so grab some while you can as the locals will be onto this one in a flash.

Christmas Made Easy

Thinking about what to get that wine loving friend or rellie for Christmas? Our Specialised Format bottles make a wonderful gift. We have an array of 1.5L magnums beautifully gift boxed including RSW, The Angelus, Woodhenge and Church Block. As these wines are only produced in small quantities, selection may be limited. That’s what makes them such a special gift. Of course, if you are struggling with which wine to choose, our Gift Vouchers make a great alternative. They can be emailed directly to the giver or the receiver and redeemed either online at www.wirrawirra.com, or directly at our Cellar Door.

It’s the race that stops a winery. Held on the first Tuesday in November to coincide with some other Nagfest in Melbourne, the 2015 McMurtrie Cup was the most elaborately staged equine extravaganza ever held at Wirra Wirra. Hay bales, hula hoops, rolling barrels, inflatable costumes and more kept the Tribe amused and a group of Chinese visitors who were lunching at our BBQ area, somewhat perplexed.

There have been more comings and goings in the winery of late than the AFL Trade Week! A roll call of the new faces include: Simon Burley who joins us in a new key role as Manager of Marketing and Tourism Development. Simon has a wealth of local and international marketing experience in wine, spirits and tourism – most recently as Exec Director of Marketing at Tourism WA. With Lee-Ann Holme taking maternity leave, we have two new contract employees joining us in Kim Cudbertson – Marketing Coordinator and Jodie Pilgrim – Domestic Sales Assistant. In the cellars we are delighted to welcome Gonzalo Sanchez all the way from Argentina and Ben Kinnaird all the way from Onkaparinga Rugby Club; and finally in the cellar door, a big shout out to Monica Jansons who also happens to be the partner of Smithy, our Senior Winemaker. It’s great to have you all on board.

We should also introduce you to Kirby Graudins and Matt Roussy. These gentlemen are in control of the cellar door at Ashton Hills Vineyard in the Adelaide Hills which is open on weekends only. Bell Ringers are very welcome to drop by and say hi to Matt and Kirby and taste some world class pinot noir.

Speaking of Lee-Ann Holme, we’re delighted to introduce Gracie Rose to the world. A beautiful baby girl for Lee-Ann and Shane. Congratulations Mum and Dad!
