From Doug Haynes, Editor - Art in Wisconsin What you hold in your hands is an 8 page version of Art in Wisconsin. When you cut all the fat what remains is a concise look at the world of art in our fair state. I could tell you that we are going green, but the truth is that like everyone else. we are biting the bullet in these tough economic times. The good news is that as much as the paper version is lean, the online version has been beefed up. So if you can’t find what you’re looking for here check online at www.artinwisconsin.com.

by steve ballard Fr. Donald Claude Noel, sculptor and WVA member since the Northeast Chapter’s inception in 1991, passed away on Friday, November 21 after fighting a battle with spinal cancer. Don will be remembered by many members as a great figurative sculptor who supported all of our work individually and collectively. He held positions of WVA Northeast Chapter Chair and, as Secretary he enjoyed taking meeting notes for many years. Don served as a priest at Saint Norbert Abbey, where on one occasion he invited the entire Northeast Chapter to have a meeting

in his studio after dining in the cafeteria and chanting during vespers in the chapel. One of Don’s greatest achievements as a sculptor was the authentic portrait he constructed after extensive research on the skull of St. Norbert of Xanten at Strahov Abbey, Prague. Don was the kindest person many of us ever knew. He will be greatly missed by our family of artists.

In 1908 George Lawrence photographed aerial views of madison with a Kite. One hundred years later, in 2008, kite photographer Craig Wilson re-shot that view. Lawrence used a massive swing lens panoramic camera that exposed a glass plate negative measuring 20 x 48 inches weighing over 50 pounds. His camera required a team of 10 big kites to lift. To capture the current vista, Wilson needed to step back from Lawrence’s vantage point to include Monona Terrace. Wilson’s image was made by stitching together about 14 images or parts of images shot with a Pentax K10D digital SLR. His images are printed out the same 20x48 inches that the Lawrence contact print measures. The State capitol in Lawrence’s image had burned in 1904 and is in the process of being rebuilt. In 1911 construction would begin on rebuilding the center dome (the one we have now) which is much taller than the one in this image. More photos can be seen at: www.flickr.com/photos/12505951@N00/

I paint with both joy and sadness. As I search for that illusive masterpiece, I cherish each and every precious moment I live as an artist. Never take for granted the artist’s gift of seeing the world as no other can.
