ProcessA great resource for brass cuffs: bergerbeads.netClean your bracelet under running water using scrubby pads to remove all oils. Dry.

Paint the cuff blank with Sophisticate Finishes Patina. You can paint it on with a paint brush or dip the bracelet into the patina. Let it dry. * Alison’s Tip* I like to dry the cuffs on a piece of metal screen over a surface to catch the drips. The metal screen material reacts with the patina chemistry and creates an edge of another color on the cuff.

You can go back and re-coat the patina liquid a second time. If there are areas where the patina did not take, the cuff was not thoroughly cleaned of all oil. But not to worry, sometimes patches of non-patina work in your favor.

Once the patina has dried, it is time to start playing. Don’t worry if some flake off.

I like to start with Martha Stewart’s Crafts Glass Paints.

It comes in a variety of colors that I love. You can paint it on with a paint brush or use directly from the tube.

* Alison’s Tip* A way to add texture is to put a dab of the jewelry glaze on the cuff and then blot it with crinkled paper. It removes the excess and adds a great texture.*

Take a look at your cuff at this point. Sometimes it’s perfect as is. If you feel that way skip to the finishing steps.

ProcessIf you want to experiment more, you can add color and texture in a variety of ways. Here are some other products to explore.

Pigment PowdersI love the different colors you can find in powder form. I use a small brush or my finger to apply. The video shows how you can get interesting effects with layering different colors. A little goes along way with these.* VIDEO TIP * I love using some of the lighter colors or ones heavy on the iridescence factor.

Colored PencilsAny kind will do. I like finishing off the edges with a contrasting color. * VIDEO TIP * See how a contrasting color can really set off the whole cuff.

Metal LeafSpray the cuff with any adhesive. A light coating is great. I keep all my metal lead scraps in a plastic container and the toss the sticky place inside and toss around till well covered.* VIDEO TIP * Watch how to use steel wool to remove as much metal leaf as you like.

Viva DecoreThis is one of my favorite materials to use. It has a shoe polish consistency but you need very little to make a big color impact.* VIDEO TIP * Watch how I use the Viva Decore Gold to create a texture and layered look.

Ranger Metallic PaintsThese work great on metal and are easy to apply. I like to draw on the bracelet using the applicator that supplied.* VIDEO TIP * Watch how to remove excess paint with a textured paper towel and leave interesting textures on the bracelet.

ProcessNail PolishNail polish comes in every color today. Experiment with colors.* VIDEO TIP * watch how a silver Polish can finish off a bracelet edge.

Interference PaintI think this paint is pure magic. Apply a light coating over areas of your layered bracelet and watch the colors shift and appear “opal” like.* VIDEO TIP * See how each interference paint color react differently.

FinishingI love to add a final layer to tie it all together. Embossing powders add texture and bling. They are easy to use. Embossing Powders Coat a rubber stamp with clear embossing ink and stamp your piece.

* VIDEO TIP * Sometimes it is easier to put the stamp face up on the table and roll the cuff across the stamp.

Sprinkle the embossing powder on your cuff, covering the entire clear ink imprint. Heat with a heat gun until it looks shiny. The cuff gets hot so be prepared with some tweezers or pliers to hold your cuff while heating.

To get the best results with the embossing powders, seal your cuff first. That way the embossing ink won’t soak into your bracelet and will give you a crisper impression.

Sealants

You can finish the cuff with a spray acrylic or a paint on sealant. Both materials come in matte and glossy finishes, so try them both and see what you like.

*Alison’s Tip* 2 light coatings of sealant works better then 1 heavy coat. Less is really moreMake sure to use in a well ventilated area where advised from the manufacture.
