traditionsFruity funAUGUST 25 Icod / Tenerife

There are two won-derful fiestas coming up that are both well worth a visit.

The first will take place on August 25 in the Santa Barbara area of Icod. The Cestos and Bollos festi-val is a celebration giving thanks for the year’s har-vest. Enormous baskets are filled, and actually made of, all kinds of fruit and vegetables and car-ried on poles which need up to four men to heave their weight.

Until 31 December: rapa nui, extreme survival in Polynesia, Pirámides de Güímar ethnographic park

The women carry bas-kets on their heads which are adorned with spun sugar and marzipan ani-mals, figures and flowers on sticks. A colourful pa-rade to the area’s church is followed by a sumptu-ous feast.

The following day the Corazones de Tejina cele-brations begin at 11.30am in the town square. Enor-mous heart plaques are made of natural products, including fruits and veg-etables, which are dis-played until 7pm on Sep-tember 27.
