PROGRAMME DETAILS
The programme is offered on both a full-time basis (1 year) and a part-time basis (2 years) at the Wits Education Campus. Full-time students attend lectures during the day. Part-time students attend evening lectures, and are registered through Wits Plus. The part-time PGCE programme is aimed at prospective teachers who hold a Bachelors degree with teaching subjects, but who work during the day.
CURRICULUM INFORMATION
To qualify as a teacher with a PGCE all students must complete the following courses:
• Theory of Education• FET Methodology: How to teach your subject at Grade 10-12 level • ONE or TWO SP Methodology courses: How to teach your subject/s at Grade 8 – 9 level• Teaching Experience in the FET and SP subject specialisation/s• Two Competency Endorsements*: • Computer Literacy: • Conversational competence in a Black South African language or South African Sign Language.
* Students who can demonstrate their competency in these areas are exempted from endorsement courses.
The programme for full and part-time students begins with an orientation workshop and registration. This is followed by a five-day school observation for full-time students, arranged by the students. Teaching Experience for full- time students takes place for three weeks during March and six weeks during July and August.
THE POSTGRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN EDUCATION (PGCE) The Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is a professional teaching qualification for applicants with a Bachelor’s degree. The Wits School of Education PGCE provides high quality professional preparation for teaching in high schools in the Senior Phase (SP, grades 8-9) and Further Education and Training (FET, grades 10-12) phases of schooling.

During Teaching Experience, students are expected to observe and teach lessons in their FET and SP subject/s.Teaching Experience for part-time students will take place for three weeks in the 1st year and six weeks in the 2nd year. Students will need to be at schools every week day, take responsibility for certain classes and participate fully in the life of the school.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
- Applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree, such as BA, BA (Fine Arts), BA (Dramatic Art), BSc, or BCom. The degree must contain a number of university courses which have been approved as suitable for teaching a school subject.
Entry into the FET methodology course requires students to be in possession of a major in an approved university subject (see Table 1). In some subjects (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) these requirements may be reduced to a sub-major (subject to senate permission).
Preference will be given to students with 60% and above for the relevant subjects.
To be admitted to the 2nd SP subject, students must have studied courses related to that teaching subject. Usually one year of study in an approved subject is required for the SP teaching subject.
Tables 1 and 2 provide a list of approved university courses for entry into the FET and SP subject specialisations

An evaluation of non-South African qualifications is a requirement – from the South African Qualification Authority (SAQA). They can be contacted at 012 431 5000, or their website at www.saqa.org.za. Please note that it often takes up to six months to process an evaluation.

Please note:All copies of original certificates/documents need to be certified by a Commissioner of Oaths. A photostat or faxed copy does not constitute a certified copy. Where there has been a name change, such as certificates under a maiden name but applicant now uses their married name, a certified copy of the marriage certificate must be enclosed.Incomplete applications will not be processed. Where applicants are currently registered, no final decision will be made until all examination results are received. The onus is on the applicant to send the academic transcript with all the results to the Wits School of Education.
