2019 Camp Descriptions & General Information
Traditional Camp at Kendall Indian Hammocks Park and South Dade – (Ages 5-12)
*Weeks in red are at Kendal Indian Hammocks (KIH) only and blue is at both location. Children enrolled in traditional camp will be actively engaged in a variety of fun activities including sports,
team building, STEM, arts & crafts, water play and exploration. Each week will be driven by a theme and
all camp activities will be related to the theme. Lunch will be provided for campers.
Theme Weeks Week 1: June 10 - June 14: Around the World: Campers will experience different world cultures!
Children will map a course that takes them around the world in 5 days while having fun learning
about other cultures. Bring a friend!

Week 2: June 17 - June 21: Water Wars Week: Get ready to get wet and have fun. Keep cool with a
week of water adventures guaranteed to make every day wet and wild. Who is ready to jump in?

Week 3: June 24 - June 28: Nature Unleashed: Campers will experience different aspects of nature
each day of the week! Learn about animals, trees, weather, waterways, and more. Let us go
outdoors and explore!

o Major activity of the week: Build a Roller Coaster
Week 4: July 1 - July 5: Party in the USA: Campers will learn about exciting destinations in Florida
including a National Park, and enjoy special activities across Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe
counties. Ready to travel?

o Major activity of the week: Design an Animal Habitat
Week 5: July 8 - July 12: Sports Extravaganza: Experience a variety of sports, fitness and games
geared for girls and boys. Increase agility, strength and skills while having fun. Ready to play ball?

o Major activity of the week: Create your own Obstacle Course
Week 6: July 15 - July 19: Super Heroes Week: Create your own Super Hero and join with other
campers to solve a quest each day and save the camp. Community heroes will make special visits
to camp. Go, go campers!

Week 7: July 22 - July 26: Myth Busters: Campers take off into a world of exploration. You will get
your chance to explore the great myths and realities of the world. Are you ready to bust some
myths?

Week 8: July 29 - August 2: The Y’s Got Talent: Come share your hidden, or not so hidden,
talents. Individually or as a group, everyone is a star on stage. Lights, camera, action! Are you
ready to perform?

Week 9: August 5 - August 9: Color Wars: Get your game face on! Campers will participate in team
competitions all week. Along with spirited fun, campers will be encouraged to demonstrate the Y
core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. Who’s got spirit?

Week 10: August 12 - August 16: Summer Highlights: Come relive all the best moments of each week. From Sports to Super Heroes to Color Wars, come join the fun for all!

Please note that theme weeks are only applicable to Traditional Camp Other camps are driven by their
specialty.

Awesome Art (Ages 5-12) => Weeks of June 17, July 1, July 15, and July 29
Have a little artist in your house or just a child who likes to get messy and create? Campers will
learn and use different forms of art to create fun masterpieces including clay, paint, craft supplies
and more. A field trip to Art Thyme is included. Lunch will be provided on non-field trip days
STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (Ages 8-12)
Experiment, discover and build. Hands-on learning experiences like animal science, building a rocket,
erupting a volcano, building a bridge, flying drones and much more. Campers will also experience
/physic science and a field trip to the Frost Science Museum. Campers will also have an incredible
time engaging daily with the Imagination Playground. Lunch will be on non-field trip days
Week 2- June 17: Veterinary Science - Campers will gain knowledge and understanding of
veterinarian science and develop skills to assist in the skill set of pet care. Youth will also
have the opportunities to explore careers related to animal science. Field trip to the Zoo and
working with animals. Ages 8-12.
Week 5- July 18: Science Exploration - Campers will have hands-on-learning experiences such
as engineering constructions, creating crazy slime goo, and exploring chemical compounds
and more. Field trip to Frost Science Museum.
Week 7- July 22: Physics Eruption – Campers will have the opportunity to experience physics
first hands with calculations and critical thinking as they construct rockets, shoot videos with
drones, discover the art of roller blading and cycling. Learn about astronomy and dive into
magnetic experiments.
Week 9- August 5: Environmental Science - Campers will learn about the environment and its
effects on everyday life. Learn how to protect our various ecosystems in nature through
recycling and clean water campaign. Mother Earth Monday; Tree Plant Tuesday; Water
Wednesday; Triangle Trash Thursday; Fresh Air Friday
Week 10- August 12: STEM Mash UP - Ending the summer with the best of the best of STEM
camps. We will take a little of each of our STEM themes and select the activities that our
campers loved the best!
Mini Master Chef (Ages 5-12) => Weeks of June 10, June 24, July 15, and August 5
Master Chefs in the making. Let your kids make a mess in our kitchen instead! Campers will
experiment with a different cuisine every day making delicious, healthy food creations. Campers
will also visit a local restaurant to see behind-the-scenes food in the making.
American Girl Doll (Ages 5-12) => Weeks of June 10, June 24, July 8, and July 29
Calling all American Girl Doll Fans! If you love adventure, helping others and learning how to be a
true friend, then this camp is the one for you! Campers will spend the week exploring different
periods of history with their favorite doll friend by their side. Campers will also visit the American
Girl Store to engage in store activities and crafts. Lunch will be provided.
Just Dance (Ages 6-12) => Weeks of June 10, July 8, and July 22
Come learn the newest dance moves, cheer routines, work on basic tumbling, create your own spirit
stick and have fun! Water play and other activities are included. Lunch will be provided!
Trip & Travel (Ages 8-12) => Weeks of June 17, July 8, and July 29
Campers will meet at the South Dade YMCA daily and leave for an adventure. Explore the everglades,
visit the Frost Science Museum, kayaking/boating, fishing, National Park visits, a visit to Tiger Tail
for zip lines, ropes courses and water front activities and more.
Sport Camps
Learn the fundamental skills, drills and strategies of your favorite sports. Includes elements of
traditional day camp. Ages 5 to 12 years old.
Basketball (Ages 5-12) => Weeks of June 10, June 24, July 8, July 22, and August 5
Dribble Pass, Shoot, and Score. Learn and perfect the individual and team skills of basketball while
getting stronger and having fun. Campers will be divided by age groups for play and skill
development (5-8 & 9-14). Develop and build upon dribbling, passing, footwork, team play and
more. Game play against other YMCA teams. Camp also includes water play, conditioning and other
activities. Lunch will be provided.
Volleyball (Ages 5-12) => Weeks of June 17, July 15, and July 29
Bump, Set, Spike! Campers will be divided by age/skill groups for play and skill development (6-9 &
10-14) Develop and build upon bumping, serving, setting and spiking. Learn basic team play, the
beginning skills needed to play the sport, have fun, and meet new friends. Campers need kneepads.
Water play, conditioning and other activities included. Lunch will be provided!
Girls Skilled/Competitive Play Volleyball (Ages 13-17) => Weeks of June 17, July 15, and July 29
Work with our qualified coaches to build upon your existing skills. Campers must have experience in
volleyball competitive play (including club, middle and high school team). Girls will travel to compete
against other YMCA/local teams. Our certified personal trainers will lead daily sports conditioning.
Team jersey included. Campers need kneepads and other protective personal gear. Lunch provided
on non-travel days. John Tyson must evaluate campers if they have not competed in our League or
Camp previously.
Futsal (Soccer) (Ages 5-12) => July 1, July 15, and August 5 Kick, Pass, Shoot, Goal! Start your World Cup Soccer vision right here! This form of indoor
soccer is traditional played on a hard floor. Campers will build skills in dribbling, passing,
footwork, and small team play. Water play and other activities included. Lunch will be provided!
Teen Leadership Camp – (Ages 13-17) – LOCATED AT South Dade YMCA Teens experience an action-packed day of fun, leadership and team building, along with
outdoor adventure, field trips, service learning projects to earn community service hours, and
much more. The teens will receive the opportunity to select the specialty or traditional camp;
they would like to assist staff with the younger campers.
General Camp Information for 2019
1. Campers must register for the full week. We do not provide options for 1, 2, 3, or 4 days. 2. Camp is from 9am - 4:00pm. If parents need care from 7am - 9am or 4:00pm - 6:00pm
an additional fee is required for Pre/Post Care. 3. Financial Assistance is on a first come-first serve basis and will be awarded upon
determination of association criteria. Please allow up to one-week for F/A processing and
notification. While parents are waiting for the award, they may opt to put down the camp
deposit to hold their spot. 4. F/A is not available for Trip and Travel Camp 5. Lunch will be provided for all camps except Trip & Travel and when campers are on a field
trip. Weekly menus will be provided to parents. Lunch examples include Turkey & Cheese
sandwiches and ham & cheese sandwiches. Fresh fruit, milk and a side will be included as
well. Campers may opt out of all or some of the lunches.
6. Daily afternoon snack is provided for all campers. Examples include pre-packaged
crackers, pretzels and juice. Campers are also encouraged to bring their own snacks 7. All campers must bring a water bottle. 8. Camper to Counselor ratio is 1:6 for water related field trips
9. Camper to Counselor ratio is 1:10 for Trip and Travel Camps 10. Camper to Counselor ratio is 1:12 for Enrichment Camps 11. Camper to Counselor ratio is 1:12 for Traditional Camps 12. Camper to Counselor ratio is 1:12 for Sports Camps 13. Camper to Counselor ratio is 1:15 for Teen Leadership Camp 14. There is no transportation to and from Kendall/Indian Hammocks. Parents will drop off and
pick up at that camp location. 15. Campers should bring a bathing suit daily for ALL CAMPS. We may not be swimming in a pool
but we will have active water play. 16. Deposits are non-transferable and non-refundable
17. Full payment for camp is due the Wednesday before the start of a camping week. For
example: Week 1 starts on June 10th, 2019; therefore, full payment for Week 1 is due on
Wednesday, June 5, 2019. 18. Registration accepted after Friday at 5pm will require an expedite fee of $20.00. We will
accept campers throughout the weekend and up to Monday camp day, provided space is
available. However the expedite fee and all paperwork must be provided at the time of
registration. Unfortunately, we will not be able to process F/A applications for expedited
registrations.
19. Camp Rally Day will be Tuesday, May 14, 2019 and Friday May 17, 2019 at 6PM. Meet our
Camp Director and other camp leadership. 20. We are starting a new tradition, “The Last Blast Camp Dance” will take place on the last
Friday of camp August 16th, 2019from 11:00am-5:00pm. All campers are invited whether
they came for one week or all summer. They must pre-register for the Camp Dance. There is a
fee of $10.00. Hotdogs, Burgers and Chips for Lunch, Ice Cream Sunday Bar. DJ and other
fun activities included. Located at the South Dade YMCA. The $10.00 fee is not applicable to
campers who are registered for Week 10. 21. Kendall/Indian Hammocks is an OUTDOOR camp. We will have several shade structures and
an indoor space for one period a day. An inclement weather shelter will be the gym in the
local school next to the park. 22. Parents must drop off and pick up at Kendall Indian Hammocks 23. A Camp Map will be provided for parents outlining the drop off and pick up location. 24. Traditional Camp children will be divided into age appropriate groups 25. Theme week activities are only applicable to Traditional Camp and Teen Leadership Camp.
