THE TIP-OFFOne day after knocking off No. 18/16 Purdue, WKU Hilltopper Basketball wraps up play in the Bad Boy Mow-ers Battle 4 Atlantis against SMU at 6 p.m. CT Friday in the tournament’s fifth-place game in Paradise Island, Bahamas. The Hilltoppers led Purdue for nearly 39 minutes on their way to the 77-73 upset victory Thursday.

SMU bounced back from a loss Wednesday to Northern Iowa by beating No. 2 Arizona 66-60 on Thursday night. The Hilltoppers and Mustangs haven’t played since 1968, but WKU leads the series 2-0. WKU head coach Rick Stansbury has never faced SMU.

QUICK SHOTS• WKU’s victory over Purdue was its first over a ranked opponent since beating No. 25 Old Dominion on Jan.

• Six of WKU’s seven active scholarship players are averaging in double figures, between 10 and 14 points. A different player has led WKU in scoring in all five outings this season.

• As of Thursday, Justin Johnson was tied for eighth among active NCAA players for career rebounds and career double-doubles. He’s one of just eight active NCAA players with at least 1,000 career points and 700 rebounds.

• Justin Johnson needs 251 rebounds to reach 1,000 for his career. That would make him just the fifth player in WKU history with 1,000 career points and 1,000 rebounds, joining Tom Marshall, Art Spoelstra, Ralph Crosthwaite and Jim McDaniels, the last to accomplish the feat in 1971.

LAST GAME AGAINST SMU: DECEMBER 7, 1968WKU overcame a four-point halftime deficit and surged to a 92-79 victory over SMU in front of 12,500 fans at E.A. Diddle Arena. Jim Rose paced the Hilltoppers with 28 points, while Jim McDaniels contributed 23 points and 19 rebounds. WKU outrebounded SMU 69-43.

All requests should be made as early as possible and should be limited to working press only. Space on the E.A. Diddle Arena press row is limited, and a media/photo work room is available on the ground level just off the arena floor for credentialed media members.

Credentials will be screened and issued on a priority basis, with national publications, daily newspapers, wire services, originating radio and television networks, television tape crews and student newspapers from WKU and the visiting school receiving top priority. Requests from weekly newspapers, internet publications and radio stations that cover WKU and the visiting team will be honored on a space-available basis.

Spouses, dates, equipment carriers and non-working members of the media are restricted from press row, sidelines and interview areas. Any abuse of a credential to a WKU athletic event will result in the immediate removal of the media member from the event as well as the agency losing credential privileges for the remainder of the season.

MEDIA WILL CALL: Credentials may be picked up on gameday at the Media Will Call located at Gate 2 outside of E.A. Diddle Arena. Please be mindful that parking is done by a list and parking passes will not be issued, so please request parking at the same time.

PHOTOGRAPHERS: Credentials for photographers will be issued on the basis of circulation, with priority granted to agencies covering the participating schools on a regular basis. Credentials will not be issued to freelance photographers unless they are employed by a reputable publication or the media relations office of the participating schools. Per NCAA rule, images or likeness of current student-athletes may not be sold, distributed or used for commercial purposes.

RADIO COVERAGE: Radio broadcast permission must be obtained in advance, along with press row reservations, from Zach Greenwell. WKU maintains courtesy ethernet and phone lines for schools who can provide reciprocal

arrangements for the Hilltopper IMG Sports Network. ISDN lines will not be available in Diddle Arena this season. Inquiries about any other accommodations should be made well in advance with Greenwell and WKU Telecommunications.

BASELINE AREAS: Access to the baselines is reserved for photographers/videographers. Seating on the baselines is extremely limited, and several spots will be marked and reserved for season credential holders. Media must remain within the six spots on each baseline, away from the areas around the goals and stairs, and outside the team bench areas. Those who do not adhere to these policies will be asked to move or leave the building.

RECRUITS: Per NCAA rule, media are not permitted to have contact with a prospect or family members of a prospect during their visit (official or unofficial) to campus, including prospects in attendance at practice or games. Contact includes in-person conversations, phone calls, text messages, emails, social media, etc. Media are also asked to make every effort to keep distance from prospects on campus, including at practice, during pregame activities and in the stands.

GAMEDAY SERVICES: Members of the media covering the game will be provided with pregame notes for both teams, a media guide and a flipcard. Statistics will be handed out at each media timeout, and a running play-by-play will also be provided following the game. WKU offers live stats for media members through StatBroadcast. Approximately 15 minutes following the completion of the game, a final statistical book will be available. The first run of books will be given directly to the visiting SID to allow for easy departure.

POSTGAME INTERVIEWS: For home games, head coach Rick Stansbury and select players will hold a postgame news conference with the media in the Paul Just Media Center at E.A. Diddle Arena. WKU Athletic Communications/Media Relations representatives will be available to assist in postgame interviews. Interviews with the visiting team can be coordinated with the visiting SID, unless it is predetermined that the visiting team will also come to the media room.

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas — WKU (3-2) led No. 18/16 Purdue nearly the whole way – for 38 minutes and 41 seconds – and held on late to claim a 77-73 victory Thursday at the Battle 4 Atlantis. Purdue (4-2) was the highest-ranked team WKU has defeated since No. 3 Louisville on Nov. 30, 2008. The Boilermakers chipped away in the second half and even got as close as 75-73 with five seconds left, but WKU senior guard Darius Thompson netted two free throws to ice the win. Senior forward Justin Johnson led WKU with 17 points and nine rebounds. His bucket with 21 seconds left stalled a Purdue run and gave WKU a 74-69 lead. Freshman guards Jake Ohmer and Taveion Hollingsworth Hollingsworth each finished with 15 points, while Hollingsworth also added six rebounds and three assists. Thompson added 12 points, four rebounds and four assists. WKU shot 50.9 percent from the field, outrebounded Purdue 36-33 and netted 11 of 13 free throws in the second half.

MOVING UP THE RANKSVillanova – ranked fifth in the AP poll and third in the coaches’ poll at the time – was the highest-ranked team WKU has faced since taking on No. 3 Kansas on March 22, 2013, in the NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats were the highest-ranked team WKU has faced in the regular season other than Louisville since facing No. 1 Florida on Nov. 24, 2006.

HUSTLE PLAYS BEAT THE PANTHERSWKU’s 23 offensive rebounds against Kentucky Wesleyan on Nov. 15 were the program’s most since pulling down 25 in a season-opening win over Campbells-ville on Nov. 14, 2015. The Hilltoppers’ 12 steals against Kentucky Wesleyan were their most in a game since grabbing 13 against Brescia on Dec. 28, 2015. WKU never recorded more than nine steals in a game last season.

PACKING DIDDLEThe attendance of 5,241 against Missouri State on Nov. 10 was the largest for a game in Diddle Arena since Jan. 30, 2016, against Middle Tennessee (5,259). It was the largest crowd for a WKU home opener since the Hilltoppers drew 6,271 against Kennesaw State to start the 2007-08 Sweet 16 season, and it was the largest crowd for a nonconference contest since 7,598 watched WKU host No. 4 Louisville on Dec. 20, 2014.

STRONG TUNE-UPSWKU outscored its three exhibition opponents by an average of 93-60 after win-ning both preseason of its tune-ups by eight or fewer points a year ago. The Hill-toppers also outscored their final two exhibition opponents by a combined 128-46 in the paint this preseason. They scored 109 points in their exhibition win over Cumberland, their most points in any exhibition or regular-season game since scoring 110 against Hungarian team Atomeromu Se on Nov. 12, 2000.

TOPS SIGN FIVE IN EARLY PERIODThe Tops signed five prospects to national letters of intent during the November early signing period. The recruiting class includes three high-scoring guards and two post players standing 6-foot-10 or taller. All three of the high school recruits are rated at least three-star prospects by the 247Sports Composite.

PLAYING FOR CHARITYThe Hilltoppers opened their season with a game for a great cause, winning a 78-64 charity exhibition at Samford on Oct. 29. The game was labeled the “Pack The Pete For Hurricane Relief” game, with proceeds donated to the Red Cross Hurricane Irma Relief Fund for Florida. The NCAA granted numerous programs waivers to add an exhibition game with the proceeds going to relief efforts fol-lowing a series of devastating hurricanes in the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Admission was free but Samford requested $10 donations.

PURA VIDAThe Hilltoppers had the chance to bond and gain valuable experience with a week-long foreign tour trip to Costa Rica in August. It was WKU’s first such trip since traveling to Spain prior to the 2005-06 season. NCAA rules permit pro-grams to take one foreign tour trip every four years, and the Hilltoppers were also granted 10 valuable practices before leaving Bowling Green. WKU went 3-0 on the trip with two victories over Laurentian University from Canada and one win over the Costa Rica National Team. The Hilltoppers averaged 107 points per game and won their three contests by an average of 30.3 points. They also had the opportunity to participate in team activities such as ziplining and 4-wheeler rides through the rainforest.

HONORING BIG MACThe Hilltoppers will wear a “44” patch on their jerseys this season to honor the memory of WKU legend Jim McDaniels. McDaniels, one of the finest players to ever compete for the program, passed away in September. The 7-foot center from Scottsville, Ky., finished his WKU career with 2,238 points, which ties for the all-time program record. He also ranks first in WKU history in career field goals (935), career scoring average (27.6 points per game) and double-doubles (74), second in rebounding average (13.1 per game) and field goals attempted (1,763), fourth in total rebounds (1,118) and ninth in made free throws (368). McDan-iels was one of just two WKU All-Americans who were honored as such in each year of their Hilltopper careers. The Hilltoppers went a combined 62-19 during McDaniels’ time with the program under head coach John Oldham, advancing to the NCAA Tournament in each of his last two years, including a run to a third-place finish in the Final Four in 1971. McDaniels is one of eight former WKU play-ers to have their jersey retired and hung in the rafters at E.A. Diddle Arena.

MY OLD KENTUCKY HOMEThis year’s WKU roster features six players from the state of Kentucky – Justin Johnson (Hazard), Tyler Miller (Louisville), Jalen Baker (Louisville), Jared Savage (Bowling Green), Jake Ohmer (Taylor Mill) and Taveion Hollingsworth (Lexing-ton). That’s the most Kentucky players on a WKU roster since the 2007-08 squad that advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

NEW FACESWith nine newcomers on the roster, WKU returns just two players who competed for the program last season in seniors Justin Johnson and Tyler Miller. They rep-resent 21.1 percent of the program’s scoring from the 2016-17 campaign, 27.3 percent of the rebounding and 17.4 percent of the assists.

POSTSEASON PLAYWKU has advanced to at least the semifinals of its league tournament in 11 of the last 13 seasons. The team is 21-6 with four championships in the last 10 con-ference tournaments overall. The Hilltoppers’ 22 NCAA Tournament appearances are five more than the next closest Conference USA school (UTEP, 17), and as many as the eight league schools with the fewest appearances combined (LA Tech, 5; Marshall, 5; Rice, 4; North Texas, 3; Southern Miss, 3; FIU, 1; Florida Atlan-tic, 1; UTSA, 0).

PROGRAM PRESTIGEEntering the 2017-18 campaign, WKU ranks third in NCAA history in regular- season league titles (42), seventh in 20-win seasons, ninth in all-time winning percentage (.660) and 18th in all-time victories (1,748).

PIPELINE TO THE PROSThe Hilltoppers have had 35 NBA Draft picks in program history, most recently forward Jeremy Evans to the Utah Jazz in 2010. WKU is currently represented in the NBA by New York Knicks guard Courtney Lee, who enters his 10th season in the league.

FABULOUS FRESHMANFreshman guard Taveion Hollingsworth’s 24 points against Nicholls on Nov. 19 were the most by a WKU freshman since Derrick Gordon scored 25 against Little Rock on March 4, 2012.

HIGHLIGHT REEL TOPSSenior forward Dwight Coleby’s one-handed putback slam against Kentucky Wesleyan was selected as the No. 1 play of the night on ESPN’s SportsCenter on Nov. 15, 2017. Five days later, freshman forward Marek Nelson came in at No. 7 on SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays with a baseline dunk over a defender as he was fouled. It was the first time WKU has had a play on SC’s Top Plays since Trency Jackson’s game-winning shot to beat Little Rock on Feb. 8 2014.

COLEBY HITS HIS STRIDEAfter tallying just one double-double in his first three years of college ball, senior forward Dwight Coleby tallied three double-doubles in his first four games as a Hilltopper. Coleby – a graduate transfer who previously played at Kansas and Ole Miss – scored a career-high 19 points with 10 rebounds against Kentucky Wesleyan on Nov. 15, his first career double-double since Jan. 17, 2015, at No. 19 Arkansas as a sophomore at Ole Miss.

BEARDEN SETS THE BAR HIGH IN DEBUTRedshirt junior guard Lamonte Bearden’s 24 points and three made 3-pointers against Missouri State were both career highs, including his two seasons as a starter at Buffalo. The 24 points were the most by a WKU newcomer in a season opener since Derrick Gordon’s 25 points to open the 2011-12 campaign.

TEAM CAPTAINSSenior forward Justin Johnson, senior guard Darius Thompson and freshman guard Taveion Hollingsworth have been named WKU’s team captains for the 2017-18 season. It’s the first time the Hilltopper program has named team cap-tains since 2013-14, and Hollingsworth is the first freshman on record named as a captain in program history, which dates back to 1914.

JOHNSON NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMSenior forward Justin Johnson was named to the Preseason All-Conference USA Team for the second straight year after leading WKU with 14.5 points and 9.4 rebounds per game in 2016-17, becoming the first Hilltopper to lead the team in both categories in consecutive years since Chris Marcus in 2000-02. He ranks 31st on WKU’s all-time scoring list with 1,180 career points. Johnson was the first Hilltopper to average at least 14 points, nine rebounds and two assists since Mike Odemns in 1974-75.

MR. DOUBLE-DOUBLEJohnson led Conference USA last season in both rebounding and double-dou-bles. He ranked in the top 40 nationally in both categories. He was the first Hill-topper with at least five games of 14-plus rebounds in a season since Nigel Dixon in 2003-04. Johnson’s 14 double-doubles last season were tied for the 10th-most by a Hilltopper since 1960, and they were the most since Dixon’s 15 in 2003-04. His 26 career double-doubles are tied for the seventh-most at WKU since 1960, and they’re the most since Chris Marcus’ 38 from 1999-2002. Johnson’s 302 re-bounds last season were the third-most by a WKU player in the last 30 years. His 219 defensive rebounds were the second-most. Johnson led the Hilltoppers in rebounding in 27 of 32 games, including the final 17 contests.

TESTING THE GRIDIRONJohnson opted to spend spring practice, summer workouts and the beginning of fall camp with the WKU football program this year as a tight end. The 6-7, 245-pound senior added about 20 pounds to bulk up for the transition, but ulti-mately decided to return to basketball shortly before the team’s foreign tour to Costa Rica after dealing with a knee injury. He’s since shed the majority of the weight he added for football.

TICKETS TO THE BIG DANCEWKU’s four Division I transfers – Dwight Coleby (2) , Darius Thompson (3), Lamon-te Bearden (2) and Jared Savage (1) – have competed in a combined eight NCAA Tournaments at their previous schools. Thompson and Coleby have been active team members in a combined 11 NCAA Tournament wins.

HEADED HOME TO ATLANTISWKU graduate senior Dwight Coleby – a native of Nassau, Bahamas – gets the chance to play in his home country as the Hilltoppers compete in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament in November. WKU will be at the Atlantis resort in Paradise Island, Bahamas, for nearly a week and will play three games over Thanksgiving.

BROTHER VS. BROTHERWKU freshman guard Josh Anderson’s Hilltoppers faced off against the team of his older brother, Simpson Anderson, when WKU defeated Campbellsville in their second exhibition. Josh Anderson is a four-star prospect who won three state championships at Madison Prep Academy in Baton Rouge, La. Simpson Ander-son is in his first season playing for CU after two years at Hill College in Texas.

FATHER VS. SONWKU graduate senior guard Darius Thompson squared off against his father, Cumberland University head coach Lonnie Thompson, when the Hilltoppers hosted the Phoenix in their second exhibition of the year. Darius Thompson nearly recorded a triple-double with 16 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists in WKU’s 109-66 win. Lonnie Thompson is in his 16th season at the helm and has taken Cumberland to the NAIA National Tournament three times.

BEST IN THE BLUEGRASSFreshman guard Taveion Hollingsworth was named 2017 Kentucky Mr. Basket-ball and is the sixth winner of the award in WKU history. He’s the first since Eliza-bethtown’s Steffphon Pettigrew in 2007.

HEAD OF STATEFreshman guard Jake Ohmer was the star of the 2017 Kentucky high school state tournament. He scored 106 points across three games – the 13th-most ever scored in a single Kentucky state tourney – and led his squad to the semifinals before falling by one to the eventual state champion. Ohmer caught the eye of Stansbury at the tournament and was offered a scholarship upon its conclusion.

MAKING A MARK IN THE MAGNOLIA STATERick Stansbury returned to the sidelines as a head coach in Mississippi at Southern Miss on Feb. 4, 2017, for the first time since he retired following a 14-year run at Mississippi State in 2012. After beating the Golden Eagles, Stans-bury is now 196-52 (79 percent) as a head coach in games played in Mississippi.

TOURNAMENT TIMEIn Stansbury’s 31 previous seasons as a head coach or assistant coach, his teams have gone to the postseason 18 times, with top-five seeds in the NCAA Tourna-ment six times. The Bulldogs reached the postseason 11 times in Stansbury’s 14 seasons as a head coach at Mississippi State.

CHAMPIONSHIP MINDSETDuring Stansbury’s final 10 years leading Mississippi State, only Kentucky won more SEC championships than his eight, and over his entire 14-year run at the helm, only Kentucky and Florida won more games. His 293 career victories are the 10th-most in SEC history.

RECRUITING CLASSESStansbury has signed six top-20 recruiting classes during his time as a head coach, including five in his tenure at Mississippi State. His recruiting class for 2017-18 was ranked in the top 10 nationally by every major recruiting outlet and was WKU’s first top-25 class in the modern recruiting era.

FAMILY TRADITIONStansbury’s connection to The Hill goes back well before his hiring as head coach to his great uncle, Edgar B. Stansbury, a 1994 WKU Athletics Hall of Famer as a three-sport athlete (baseball, basketball, football), football assistant coach under W.L. “Gander” Terry, and Director of Athletics in 1946 after serving his country in World War II. The concourse inside E.A. Diddle Arena is named in E.B. Stansbury’s honor.

CONFERENCE USA SLATEHome games against five of the top seven finishers in C-USA last season highlight the conference play portion of the schedule. The Hilltoppers will play home-and-home series with 2017 C-USA regular-season and tournament champion Middle Tennessee and third-place Old Dominion, in addition to hosting second-place LA Tech. The C-USA Tournament will take place March 7-10 at Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas.

NONCONFERENCE SCHEDULENine home games and at least five contests against 20-win programs from a year ago highlight WKU’s nonconference schedule. The Hilltoppers will play seven regular-season home games and two exhibitions in nonconference action, and they won’t travel for a true road game until Dec. 10. Including the Conference USA portion of the schedule, WKU will play 18 total home games this season. Villanova, Wright State, Ohio, Wisconsin and Belmont all finished with at least 20 wins and in the top 150 of the RPI last season. WKU has a chance to add to the strength of its schedule with the tough Battle 4 Atlantis field.

With 311 career wins and 11 postseason trips as a head coach to his credit, Rick Stansbury is the 15th head men’s basketball coach at Western Kentucky University. Stansbury was hired to lead the WKU program on March 28, 2016.

In his first season with the Hilltoppers, Stansbury inherited a program with no returning guards and kept it competitive by adding several new faces, including three experienced graduate transfer guards with NCAA Tournament experience.

The veteran coach recorded his 300th career win at Florida Atlantic on Dec. 31, 2016. He also notched an 11-3 record at home, including a perfect 5-0 mark in nonconference play.

Stansbury has never registered less than 10 home wins in a season as a head coach. He has a 79.1 percent winning percentage overall in home games at the helm, including an 87.7 percent clip in nonconference contests.

Stansbury’s recruiting class for 2017-18 was ranked in the top 10 nationally by every major recruiting outlet and was WKU’s first top-25 class in the modern recruiting era.

Stansbury, a Battletown, Ky., native and Campbellsville University Class of 2003 Hall of Famer, came to The Hill following two years at 2015-16 Southeastern Conference regular season champion Texas A&M, which included a run to the 2016 NCAA Sweet 16.

In his 31 seasons as a head coach or an assistant coach, Stansbury’s teams have gone to the postseason 18 times, with Top 5 seeds in the NCAA Tournament in 2016 (3), 2004 (2), 2003 (5), 2002 (3), 1996 (5) and 1995 (5) and in the NIT in 2012 (4), 2010 (1), and 2007 (1).

The veteran head coach made his name over a 22-year run at Mississippi State, including the final 14 as head coach (1999-2012), where he compiled a career record of 293-166 (.638), led the Bulldogs to the postseason 11 times – with six NCAA appearances – and became Mississippi State’s all-time wins leader in the process.

In his two seasons in College Station, working for head coach Billy Kennedy, Stansbury helped the Aggie coaching staff sign a consensus top-10 recruiting class, a class regarded as one of the best in school history, in 2015. In the 2015-16 campaign, with Stansbury serving as associate head coach, the Aggies set a school record for wins with 28 after a 21-12 campaign and third-place SEC finish in his first season. Texas A&M’s run to the Sweet 16 was the deepest the Aggies have advanced in the tournament in program history.

During Stansbury’s final 10 years leading Mississippi State, only Kentucky won more SEC championships than his eight, and over his entire 14-year run at the helm, only Kentucky and Florida won more games. His 293 career victories are the 10th-most in SEC

history. The Bulldogs won the SEC tournament in 2002 and 2009, the overall SEC championship in 2004 and dominated the league’s Western Division during Stansbury’s tenure, winning the side in 2003, 2004, 2007, 2008 and 2010.

His teams were also postseason regulars, appearing in the NCAA Tournament or NIT in 11 of his 14 seasons as MSU’s head coach, including trips to the NCAA Tournament in four consecutive seasons (2002-2005) and consecutive appearances in 2008 and 2009 with NIT trips in 1999, 2001, 2007, 2010 and 2012. Including his time as an assistant, Mississippi State went to the postseason 15 times in 22 seasons.

Seven Bulldogs earned All-America honors, 23 were named All-SEC (11 first teamers), and he posted 20 or more wins in 10 seasons during his 14-year run as head coach. Prior to Stansbury taking over as head coach, MSU had just seven postseason tournament appearances and won at least 20 games just seven times in the school’s previous 86 years of basketball competition.

Stansbury has been a winner in every capacity.

Off the court, Stansbury’s program graduated players at a rate never before seen at Mississippi State. Over his time as head coach, only Vanderbilt had a higher graduation rate in the SEC, and the Bulldogs were third in the SEC with 41 academic honorees in 14 years. Fans also came out in droves in Starkville to watch Stansbury’s Bulldogs play. Of the Top 30 most attended games in MSU history, 26 came during Stansbury’s run as head coach including all of the Top 10. He was the only coach in MSU history to average more than 10,000 fans per game in SEC play (2003-04/10,209), and his Bulldogs played in front of an average of over 7,000 fans per night in six of his 14 seasons as head coach.

Stansbury also brings to The Hill a national reputation of success as evidenced by his 2004 SEC Associated Press Coach of the Year, finalist for National Coach of the Year, and District 17 NABC Coach of the Year

ranked as high as No. 4 in the AP poll and finished No. 8 that year, their third consecutive Top 25 finish in the final AP poll.

As a recruiter, Stansbury is no stranger to sending players to the NBA ranks. Since 1996, Stansbury has helped guide eight players to the NBA, including Erick Dampier, the 10th overall pick in the 1996 Draft. Other pros under his tutelage include Mario Austin, Derrick Zimmerman and Jarvis Varnado.

Over a nine-year period in Starkville (2003-11), Stansbury signed five different top-20 recruiting classes. His 2005 class was rated the sixth-best nationally by Rivals.com while his final class in the spring of 2011 was No. 12 nationally by the outlet. The Class of 2015 at Texas A&M was rated No. 8 nationally by Rivals.com.

Before going to Starkville, Stansbury spent six seasons as an assistant at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tenn. Working alongside the late Lake Kelly, APSU recorded three consecutive winning seasons including an Ohio Valley Conference tournament championship and NCAA Tournament second-round berth in 1986-87.

His 16-year career as an assistant prior to the MSU head coaching post began at his alma mater, Campbellsville, during the 1981-82 season as he worked toward earning a double major in business and physical education. He then moved on to work for Randy Vernon at Cumberland in Williamsburg, where he earned his master’s in Business Education. In 1983-84, the team went 31-5 and earned a second-round appearance in the NAIA Tournament. In October 1999, Stansbury was honored by the Campbellsville Alumni Association as a proud recipient of the school’s Distinguished Alumni Award.

Stansbury’s connection to The Hill goes back well before his hiring as head coach to his great uncle, Edgar B. Stansbury, a 1994 WKU Athletics Hall of Famer as a three-sport athlete (baseball, basketball, football), football assistant coach under W.L. “Gander” Terry, and Director of Athletics in 1946 after serving his country in World War II. The concourse inside E.A. Diddle Arena is named in E.B. Stansbury’s honor.

Stansbury is married to the former Meo Mellen of Roanoke, Va. The couple has three sons, Isaac, Noah and Luke.
