Women in the British Media
Representation during the Olympics: • Women where shown as equals in my opinion as
they had equal coverage over the 29 different channels on the BBC and where praised equally as well when it came to a well known athlete, such as Jessica Ennis.
She won the athletics Heptathlon gold medal in the London 2012 Olympics and the media coverage of her success was not unnoticed. She has her own profile on the BBC website as well as several stories of her in the newspapers.
Sporting World• Although during the Olympics the public were
given equal coverage of both men and women in the sports, once the Olympics was over the news stories go straight back to being male orientated, as shown below. Thus showing how
the stereotype of the male and female roles are adhered to, with men being portrayed as the sporty, athletic ones and women being pushed to the side.
British Drama• Moving on from sports, there are several
representations of women within current British Drama. One of which is in the new series Parades Ends in which the audience is presented with a bold female character.
I say bold, due to her long gown, blonde hair and pristine appearance providing a stereotypical air head, however once she shows that she is able to speak in a variety of languages her bold character is thus presented to the audience.
British Drama• We are also presented with a variety of
representations of woman within the new series of BBC’s Waterloo Road.
The boring older lady
The younger “girl next door”
Summary• With this in mind there are a variety of different
representations of women in the media, including that of those involved in sport, major news stories or TV dramas. Although some may not be positive, it just show's us as an audience the variation in how the public and producers view women in society today.
