I was very honoured to be recognized as the 2009 ATHENA® Young Professional Leadership Award recipient. The experience that followed attending the Leadership Summit in Chicago was remarkable and a gift I am forever grateful. It was there that I met Martha Mayhood Mertz, ATHENA® International Founder. I was very moved by the experience of meeting Martha as she has an incredible energy and presence about her. I have a vivid recollection of our meeting and she ended the conversation with, "I believe in you". There are moments in life where time seems to stand still, you know something has changed, and you feel a passionate call to action and this is what that moment did for me.

It was with that inspiration and the commitment of BPW Saskatoon that the first annual BPW Saskatoon Leadership Luncheon began in 2010. I have witnessed for the last 5 years how encouraged and inspired both established and emerging leaders are by the ATHENA® Leadership Model. By providing the opportunity for more leaders to learn directly from the Founder, Martha Mayhood Mertz, will be a tremendous gift and I believe it will have a profound positive impact on our community as we continue to empower our women leaders. It has been a wonderful year and I am most honoured to have been selected as the 2014 recipient of the ATHENA® Leadership Award. I would like to thank all who made this opportunity possible. One of the key highlights of the past year was a trip to Nashville, Tennessee to attend the ATHENA® Leadership Symposium. We had great representation from Saskatoon with myself and five other ATHENA® recipients attending. It was such a pleasure to share this experience and meet other dynamic women from our community.

The calibre of women attending the ATHENA® Symposium was so very impressive. I was profoundly inspired to meet Martha Mayhood Mertz, Founder of the ATHENA® Award and architect of the leadership principles. I also had the opportunity to meet a former military officer who had worked in the Pentagon when bombed in 9/11. Another highlight was meeting a magazine editor from Conde Naste who used to live in Chicago and interviewed Oprah Winfrey as she was setting up her company Harpo. The experience was all truly inspiring for me and reiterated the principle that one should be a giving and authentic leader. If you would like to be truly inspired, I encourage you to invest your time and attend the 2015 ATHENA® Awards & Women's Leadership Development Symposium in Saskatoon. You will have the opportunity to meet Martha Mayhood Mertz and learn more about yourself and the ATHENA® leadership principles.
