From the Principal It is with mixed emotion that I write the opening of this week’s newsletter. Next year, I will be taking
leave from the Department of Education and Training. This has been a VERY difficult decision, as you all know that I love Wonthaggi Primary School. It is a wonderful school, we have amazing staff,
awesome children and an incredibly supportive community. However, I have been offered
substantial employment as an Educational Consultant in the ACT and southern NSW (as well as in England). I made my final decision when I really reflected on life; and decided that if I’m lucky
enough to one day be “rocking in a chair” in my old age, that I would look back with regret if I
didn’t take this opportunity. We so often hear that “people regret what they haven’t done, rather than what they have done.” It is my intention to return to Wonthaggi Primary School for the 2018
school year. The Department of Education and Training are in the process of appointing the Acting
Principal for 2017, and we will announce the successful candidate when this process has been completed.
Class Allocations for 2017 With our wonderful growing school community, we will be running 16 classes; Prep x3, Grade 1/2 x4,
Grade 3/4 x4 and Grade 5/6 x5. We are currently completing student placements for classes for next year. If you have any requirements for your child, please ensure that these are received in
writing no later than 9am Monday 5th December. These requests should only be based on the
learning needs of your child and will be taken into account as a component for next year. Our staff know your children very well and every effort is made to ensure that your child is placed to maximise
their potential.
We will be farewelling Wendy Wilson (Prep) at the end of the year. She has completed a full-time contract in 2016 and is looking forward to spending more time with her young family in 2017. She
has been very committed to the school and we are very appreciative of all the extra efforts Wendy has contributed to our school and your children. We wish her all the best on behalf of our school
community. Ruth Chambers (Music) will be taking leave for the 2017 school year to enjoy time with
her family. Di Johnson (Education Support) will be taking long service leave for Term 1. We are also expecting to welcome Alison Stewart back in 2017, after her year exchange to Newhaven Primary
School. She is also currently working part-time (2.5 days per week) with the Victorian Curriculum and
Assessment Authority (VCAA).
We will be welcoming the following new staff in 2017:
Fiona McKellar, joins us from Cranbourne East Primary School. She has had extensive experience as
a team leader and classroom teacher over the past 5 years. Shelley Rose, joins us from Wonthaggi North Primary School. She has taught at Wonthaggi North for
the past 4 years.
Allana Besley, completed extensive teaching rounds with our school in 2015 & 2016. She is well known to our school community.
Cassandra Pearce, joins us from Morwell, having completed placements at Yinnar and Glengarry Primary schools, which have a very similar teaching philosophy.
Cassandra VanSwol is a local young teacher, joining us after completing placements at Wonthaggi
North Primary school. Interestingly she attended school here and her grandmother taught here…
Our anticipated teacher structure is as follows: (However please be aware that it is highly likely that
there will be changes)

All children will be involved in a Transition Session on Thursday 15th December to allow them to become as comfortable as possible with their new class mates. We are endeavouring to have our
new staff here on that day, however it will not be possible to have all of them due to teaching commitments at their current schools. (Our Grade 6 children will have Graduation Practice at this
time).

STUDENT OF THE WEEK
FROM THE STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL This Friday, 2nd December, the SRC has organised a ‘Dress Orange for
Orang-utans Day’. The money raised goes to the Melbourne Zoo to help
protect the orang-utans environment, and is trying hard to change policy so
that palm oil is no longer a hidden ingredient on our supermarket shelves. It is
great when our students are caring for the world around them. It is a Gold coin donation.
For more information check out the Melbourne Zoo website - http://www.zoo.org.au/melbourne.

ARTROOM NEWS Our latest whole school art project is the Wishing Tree. All students are contributing their work to this large
scale art project which will hang off one of the trees in the school grounds. Grade Preps are making
ceramics beads, grades 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5's are sewing calico stars and grade 6’s will make beads and also
assist assembling the work. All students will contribute a wish to this Tree. Wishes will be curled up and
placed inside the calico stars along with 'wish powder' and stuffing. Students have been encouraged to
think of a wish that is not about belongings and possessions, but might help themselves, someone they
know or strangers who need help in some way. Students do not share their wishes, they place them inside
their stars and then sew them up. The 'wish powder' students place inside the stars will, in time, create a
magical effect. Families who would like to contribute a wish to this project are very welcome to do so.
There are wish slips of paper in the office and a large calico star to place them in.
Thankyou to the Wonthaggi Material Shop for donating a bag of stuffing.
If anyone has old polyester stuffing from cushions and would like to donate it to this project any donations
would be much appreciated.
More updates on this artwork as we progress.
