GLOBAL COLOUR TRENDS

Every year the AkzoNobel Global Aesthetic Center, together with international experts from the design industry, develop the colour trends for the coming year. This time we have found that we can even better align the colour palettes to people's attitude towards life if we base our trend research on a much broader foundation and include global developments in politics, society and the economy in our forecasts. Globally, we are experiencing a new appreciation of the everyday – of the real things in life. Family and friends, a balanced working and private life, health and a connection to nature are finding a whole new prioriti-sation. As a result of this we have named the key trend for 2017 "A new way of living".

PASSION FOR WOODIf we think about the values that are really important to us, then wood takes on a higher significance. Wood is the most natural and unique of all materials. Every tree and every leaf is a unique specimen reflecting beauty and life. Wood is variable, inspires, fosters creativity and offers endless combination opportunities with coloured surfaces or other materials such as glass, stainless steel, leather, fabrics etc. We love wood and want to share our passion with you. That’s why we keep you up to date about what the current colour and wood trends are and how they are combined. With the ColourFuturesTM and WoodFutures trend texts you are always up to date when it comes to the stylish combi-nation of colour and wood. Discover the trend colours and trend woods with AkzoNobel Wood Coatings and Sikkens Wood Coatings in WoodFutures 2017.

DENIM DRIFTTHE 2017 COLOUR OF THE YEAR

The sea, the blue sky above us, our favourite pair of jeans – blue is the perfect everyday colour and reflects the new appreciation of the everyday like no other colour. From deep ink blue to a very pale misty blue, the colour represents the entire spectrum of life. Overall, the 2017 Colours of the Year provide you with a very pleasant colour palette. The colours stand for the desire for balance and stimulation. Today, windows are often seen as items of furniture in the interi-or. That’s why windows are often implemented in two colours and therefore the inside is blue, white or natural, whilst the outside of the window matches the façade.

The dark colours are coated with a semi gloss or semi matt gloss level, in order to create a contrast to the natural, dead matt painted woods. The lighter blues as well as the whites/creams should, on the other hand, enter into a harmony with the woods with a dead matt look.

“DEMIN DRIFT” is a timeless and versatile blue, which changes its effect depending on light, col-our combination and situation. The colour stands for the entire spectrum of life, seeming simulta-neously new and familiar. The colour palette ranges from royal dark blue to the pale misty blue of a washed out pair of jeans.

The blues implemented onto wood: The masculine blues are ideally combined with light natural woods. You can achieve a particular spatial depth by creating light and dark contrasts and laying out the room with maple or spruce and dark blues. With the “DEMIN DRIFT” colour palette you can create calm rooms, such as bedrooms. The colour effect supports us to clear our minds, to simply be able to switch off and relax.

We are ever more aware of our responsibility for and influence on the world. We are looking for a harmonious connection between our earth and nature. And so we experience a return to the val-ues of romance in fashion and in interior design. We have combined earthy greens with more spiritual lilacs and purples, thereby creating a protective atmosphere of well-being.

Transferred to wood this means Natural woods, such as wild oak or light beech, with their beauti-ful grain, give the room naturalness and warmth. If you combine these natural woods with colours from the “Yearning for naturalness” colour palette, then a sense of space can be created by the restrained greens and natural colours, which allows us to relax and conveys a pleasant feel-good atmosphere.

The fresh colours, with a semi gloss to semi matt look, create a good contrast to the matt to dead matt painted, muted colours or natural woods such as beech or spruce. With woods such as cherry or teak it is possible to specifically emphasise the features.

Thanks to the digitisation of the world and the fast-pace of cities, the feeling of isolation is grow-ing. In turn, this fosters a feeling of togetherness. We want to be a part of something, a family or society, but at the same time preserve our individuality. This allows us to tap into networks and make friends with like-minded people regardless of their origin or age. The colour palette re-flects this. Fresh and dynamic colours stand for the young generation; the more muted colours for discerning adults.

Transferred to wood, this means That despite the dichotomy, the fresh and dynamic colours are easy to combine with the muted colours of the colour palette. This clams the ambience and creates an effect of openness and togetherness. Show courage in application and, for example, bring together dark, muted pink on oak or spruce with a fresh yellow on the wall. Or create a re-fined, discerning appearance by combing cherry with a cream colour.

THE WORKINGHOME

Cherry Ash Smoked oak Beech

With variable living spaces, we are creating the balance between work and leisure in our homes. The colour palette for this trend world will inspire you to create new living spaces in which living and working blend into one.

Transferred to wood, this means Modern technology has enabled us to work from home. The blues and greys reflect the technical, cool and linear. Warm colours, such as rust brown, orange or mustard green, stand in contrast to these. When these are combined, rooms that both inspire us to work and living spaces in which we can switch off are created. Thanks to the combination with light woods such as beech, ash or cher-ry, friendly combinations with the warm colours are created. Smoked oak, on the other hand, can specifically emphasise the features.

CONSIDEREDLUXURY

Walnut Spruce Oak Structured oak

This world of colour thrives on natural elegance. This is achieved by matt to dead matt surfaces. The trend woods of oak and walnut are maintained in their natural state with dead matt clear varnishes or oils and thereby underline the luxurious overall appearance.

We buy less, choose carefully and preserve things. It is not the material that’s in the forefront, but instead the collected experiences becomes more important. We draw on encounters, the quiet of the morning and the last rays of the evening sunshine. A calm, unobtrusive design matches this with whites and neutral colours and a great deal of love for details.

Transferred to wood, this means That less, instead of more is also reflected in the living space design. A room also comes to life with a tone-in-tone effect, creating a refined and luxurious ap-pearance. One of the prevailing trends at the international furniture exhibitions in Cologne and Milan was smooth, pastel-coloured bright-paint surfaces in grey and grey/brown colours, com-bined with structured oak or light walnut. Thanks to the various materials, an interplay is creat-ed, which does not fail in its effect and draws attention to itself. The natural wood underlines the value and gives the piece of furniture or room more naturalness and elegance.
