WD-40

Submitted by Norm Koerner

A few years ago, fellow CAW member Tom Stack

asked me, “Norm do you know what WD-40 stands

for?” No. So Tom informs me that it is an acronym

for Water Displacement—and that the 40 means it

was the fortieth “recipe” the company tried.

Now fast-forward to March of 2018 and I’m reading a

recent short snippet in the Reader’s Digest. They’re

reporting that the New York Times printed a short

article entitled PATENT NEVER PENDING, which

goes on to say:

“To this day, there is no patent for WD-40. Filing

for one would require the manufacturer to disclose its

top-secret recipe.” As I understand it, “patent rights”

persist for fourteen years, during which time others

who wish to manufacture it must make a financial

deal with the original company.

The original company was called Rocket Chemical

Company, Inc. Formed in 1953 in San Diego, by

three guys who set out to develop a line of rust pre-

vention solvents and degreasers for the aerospace in-

dustry. An aerospace manufacturer called Convair

soon used it to protect the outer skin of the Atlas Mis-

sile.

At first the product was sold as a liquid in regular

cans, likely capped, to be rubbed on with a rag. Then

the production manager came up with the idea of tiny

dispenser tips and aerosol cans. As other uses were

discovered, WD-40 was soon sold in California hard-

ware and sporting goods stores.

Popularity rose quickly. By 1968 it was being sent to

soldiers in Vietnam. The company keeps coming out

with new types of “dispense-spray-cans” which we

see in the big box stores. WD-40 is found in four out

of five American homes. People have found over

2000 uses for it. The company was shipping over one

million cans per week fifteen years ago.
