STATE OF THE“ONLY IN QUEENS”

BOROUGH ADDRESSBorough President Melinda Katz shared

some of the milestones reached in the firsthalf of her term in office and outlined thepriorities for the future of Queens in hersecond annual State of the Borough Address, delivered this morning at Colden Audito-rium on the campus of Queens College.

Building upon last year’s theme of “IfIt’s Good For Our Families, It’s Good ForQueens,” Borough President Katz this yearhighlighted the ways in which the borough’sdiversity is “an asset not just for Queens butfor all New Yorkers.” She cited the “inher-ent opportunity – by both necessity anddesign – to meet challenges with more cre-ativity, more perspectives, and more inno-vation. And what may be Only in Queenstoday sets the template for our country oftomorrow.”

Among the policy areas discussed in thespeech included Economic Development,Education, Housing, Parks, Tourism and

Culture, Transportation and ConstituentServices. A copy of the full State of theBorough Address as prepared for deliverycan be found at www.queensbp.org.

The Address concluded with specialappearances from New York Mets GeneralManager Sandy Alderson, former playerEdgardo Alfonzo and Manager TerryCollins. Borough President Katz praised the“hometown heroes” for their 2015 NationalLeague Championship victory that “re-minded us what it means to believe”, liken-ing their “true grit, determination and heart”to the “Queens identity.”

Immediately following the State of theBorough Address, guests enjoyed a briefreception with refreshments provided byPaul Evans Catering.

The State of the Borough Address wasrecorded by Queens Public Television(QPTV) and will air on the following datesand times on the following channels:

THE DAY WOODSIDESTOOD STILL

by David Rosasco

The hot soil of freedom to associateand perform with the now anticipatedattention to detail and devotion to dutyand to each other has heretofore with-stood all reasonable expectations for itscollapse and abandonment.

For over 4 years, the youth of thiscommunity gathered each Saturday in along continuous line of works number-ing into the many hundreds, but on Sat-urday, January 24, despite mighty ef-forts by noble youth led by SuemayaHusein, 3rd year student at St. John’sUniversity and a young woman servant-scholar-leader, was forced into makingthe ultimate determination to retire forthe day as the enormity of the blizzardconditions on that day made shovelingboth a hazardous enterprise and an un-necessary one given the intensity of thesnow and few daylight hours to regaincontrol of the common areas once lost toever increasing snow accumulations.

This decision was of a most difficultkind for the youth to make after experi-encing many consensus-based consider-ations to seize the initiative thus advanc-ing towards the high tower over the longcontinuity of their works, as it has al-ways been their stated goal to commence, unencumbered by perilous thoughts ofdesertion, the same sort of random andrare act for them as not gathering at all isfor so many others who can never dreamof accomplishing what a vast array ofdiligent youth can execute with militaryprecision under their maxim of ‘simpletasks repeated often until perfect andrepeatable by others’.

The yearning of all of the youth, bethey Haque Shakil, 2nd year student atBrooklyn College, Michael Maye, 8th

grade student at St. Sebastian School, orEdison Salazar, 12th year student at theYouth Leadership Academy to weighthe few available options to proceed, butespecially to take full and complete re-sponsibility for what was inevitably animpossible situation for them to avoidreveals astounding and reassuring char-acteristics of fidelity to each other andloyalty to the mission that places them atan organizational depth and cohesive-ness observable in lands far from thiscommunity but common and close inenduring nations such as Japan.

How blessed the good people ofWoodside are to have so many of suchyouth, providing so many reasons for allof the weary to entertain positive andheartening thoughts that their saviorshave arrived, yet not in the expectedform they thought they would. The hourfor deliverance was reached long agothrough their hands which burn withferocious willpower being brought tosolid, unbreakable iron without an equalor a second in worthwhile, practicalprojects that seek to add value every-where at will.

But one of these noble youth puts1,000 demons to flight, but two of themput 10,000 demons to flight, and theadding of one more increases the num-ber in flight by a factor of 10. So it iswith the youth of Woodside, who willreassemble again at a time and place oftheir choosing to create ever greatermilestones for you in your many.

FISCAL YEAR 2017PRELIMINARY BUDGET

Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Fiscal Year2017 Preliminary Budget proposal in-cludes significant victories for all NewYorkers, particularly those in my West-ern Queens district.

I’ve fought alongside concerned par-ents in our community to address over-crowding in our schools. That’s whyI’m thrilled this budget expands schoolseats for our children with over $200million for four new schools in LongIsland City and Woodside.

In 2015 this Administration and theNew York City Council made an his-toric investment in our City’s librariesto reestablish six-day library service. Iwelcome Mayor de Blasio’s proposal to

baseline $21.8 million for our three li-brary systems. While I encourage theMayor the go further and baseline all ofthe funding added last year for libraries, this baselining represents a significantstep forward.

Just as libraries secured an historicfunding increase in the Mayor’s pre-liminary budget, cultural institutions andorganizations deserve additional invest-ment to ensure they are serving all NewYorkers. I look forward to working withMayor de Blasio and Speaker MelissaMark-Viverito to secure these funds inthe Fiscal Year 2017 budget.

In Western Queens we have alsobenefitted from aggressive efforts toimplement Vision Zero. As a result, in2015, no New Yorker lost his or her lifeon Queens Boulevard, a street that forfar too long was known as the Boulevardof Death. The Administration’s furtherinvestment of $29.6 million in area-wide improvements in Long Island City,in addition to the $100 million alreadyallocated for Queens Boulevard, furthersolidifies our commitment to endingtragedies on our streets.

I look forward working with Mayorde Blasio, Speaker Mark-Viverito andmy colleagues to craft a budget thatcontinues to build on our work of em-powering more New Yorkers and end-ing inequality.

National Award Given Annually to a Higher EducationProfessional Doing Extraordinary Work in Student Affairs

Dr. Gail Mellow, president ofLaGuardia Community College in NewYork, was selected to receive the 2016NASPA President’s Award. The awardgives special recognition to a collegeor university president who has, over asustained period of time, advanced thequality of student life on campus bysupporting student affairs staff andprograms. The award is part of honorsgiven annually by NASPA - StudentAffairs Administrators in Higher Edu-cation, to members doing outstandingwork in the student affairs profession.

Dr. Mellow was selected for hercommitment to ensuring that the vi-

sion and unique knowledge of studentaffairs professionals guides LaGuardiain its focused efforts to improve stu-dent success. Under Dr. Mellow’s lead-ership, the college has made majorinvestments to increase student affairsstaffing, enhance professional devel-opment and launch new programs thathelp LaGuardia’s students stay inschool and graduate. A Single Stopoffice – a central hub where studentscan go when life struggles arise – wasestablished on campus, where highlytrained staff help students sign up forpublic benefits, provide financial lit-eracy counseling, housing placementservices, access to an on-campus foodpantry, and more. In the past four years,LaGuardia’s Single Stop program hashelped more than 10,000 students re-ceive nearly $20 million in benefits.

“I’m honored to be selected forthis prestigious NASPA award,” saysDr. Mellow. “A majority of our stu-dents have family incomes of less than$25,000 per year; we’ve seen firsthandhow a student’s academic performancecan suffer when they’re worried abouthow to pay for their next meal orsubway ride home from class. Invest-

ing in our student affairs staff hasenabled more students to tap their ex-pertise to help pay for school, findjobs, get properly advised or obtainhealth services. Our staff are essentialto student success and are helping usbuild better lives for our students, theirfamilies and our community.”

In 2012, Dr. Mellow initiated aunique leadership development pro-gram, the President’s Society atLaGuardia, to mentor students in the“middle” – not the high academicachievers– who often have little or noaccess to mentoring opportunities.

“Whether they’re interested intransferring to a four-year college orgetting a job in their chosen field, thePresident’s Society aims to give stu-dents the skills and guidance they needfrom successful professionals in allwalks of life,” says Michael Baston, vice president for student affairs andassociate provost at LaGuardia Com-munity College. “Dr. Mellow is dedi-cated to ensuring that our students haveaccess to all the tools and resourcesthey need to successfully pursue theireducation, and so this award could notgo to a finer professional.”
