Our Guest speaker will be Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan, elected in 1984 to represent the 37th district(covering the Sunnyside, Ridgewood, Astoria, Woodside, Long Island City, Maspeth, Queensbridge, Ravenswood,Dutch Kills and Blissville neighborhoods)..She was first elected to the Assembly in 1984. Assemblywoman Nolan is a member of the Democratic leadership in theAssembly and has served as Chair of both the Labor and Banking Committee during her career. Although no longer onthe Labor Committee, Nolan has continued to push legislation which protects workers rights in New York State. In January 2006, Assemblywoman Nolan was appointed as Chair of the Assembly Standing Committee on Education.Nolan is also a member of the highly influential Rules and Ways & Means Committee. She has spearheaded efforts to achieve class size reduction, universal pre-k, middle school initiatives, improve highschool graduation rates and other measures that will ultimately mean success for the more than three million schoolchildren in New York State.Among Ms. Nolan’s initial achievements was the extension of the state’s wildcard provisions that foster paritybetween federal and state-chartered banks. She also authored a new law to extend the retention period for ATM surveillance tapes in an effort to curb ATM fraud. She successfully passed legislation in the Assembly to raise the minimum wage, to enhance whistleblower protectionsfor healthcare workers, strengthen sweatshop enforcement, tighten enforcement of unpaid wage violations, protectinnocent bystanders involved in strikes and to create a special fund to investigate prevailing wage violations. She has also held hearings on such important issues as raising the minimum wage, wage and hour violations, workers’compensation, the understaffing of nurses and age discrimination in the workplace. She was successful in passing laws increasing the public’s participation in MTA decisions, extending the arbitrationprovisions for MTA’s labor unions and requiring fire safety training for employees.

Community Scores VictoryAgainst Unwelcome Adult Night Club

Community Board 2,Council Member Van

Bramer, Assembly MemberNolan, Chairman Conley

and Local BusinessesUnite at SLA HearingOn Wednesday, October 6th,

2010 elected and community lead-ers came together at a State LiquorAuthority (SLA) hearing in down-town Manhattan to speak outagainst an adult club that was ap-plying for a liquor license to oper-ate in Long Island City.

The adult club, which is oper-ated by GLC Entertainment, wasplanning on opening their doors at42-50 21st Street in Long IslandCity under the name Sin City. How-ever thanks to strong oppositionby Council Member Jimmy VanBramer, Assembly Woman CathyNolan, Community Board 2 Chair-man Joseph Conley and local resi-dents their plans of operation cameto a screeching halt at an SLAhearing today. Elected officials andcommunity members had an op-portunity to voice their concernsdirectly to the SLA about why theestablishment’s request to obtain aliquor license would harm and de-value the fabric of their commu-nity. Thanks to the united commu-nity opposition, the SLA decidedto deny the company’s request for

a liquor license – a victory thatLong Island City and Dutch KillsResidents were thrilled to hear.

“A community is only as strongas the people who care about it,”said Council Member Jimmy VanBramer. “I am proud to have joinedwith my colleagues and neighborsin successfully speaking out againstan establishment that would haveharmed the character and safety ofour communities. Long Island Cityis the gateway to Queens, and assuch must retain the high standardsits residents are accustomed to.”

“I applaud the SLA’s decisionsto deny GLC EntertainmentCorporation’s application for a li-quor license at 42-50 21st Street inLong Island City,” said AssemblyMember Cathy Nolan. “I want tothank Joe Conley and CommunityBoard 2 for leading the fight on thisissue. I am opposed to any estab-lishment that would have a negativeeffect on the quality of life in ourneighborhood and that is so pas-sionately opposed by residents andcommunity groups. The LIC busi-ness community is very vibrant; thiswould have had a negative impactboth on existing industrial areas andthe emerging residential area.

“This is great news for the com-munity, it shows that when a com-munity is united how we can win,”said Community Board 2 Chair-

man, Joseph Conley. “Thank youto everyone for taking the time tosend letters and for showing suchgreat support at the hearing.”

“This was a real triumph for thecommunity, It was the wrong use atthe wrong time in the wrong place, and the applicant, who was thor-oughly disingenuous throughoutthe application process, picked thewrong community to threaten,” saidPat O’Brien, Community Board 2Chairman of City Services. “Itshows that the public process can

work when somany compo-nents, from ourelected officials to business inter-est to community residents, pulltogether with the same purpose.”

“Our neighborhood is in themidst of an $80 million capitalimprovement program that is trans-forming the streetscape of LongIsland City to attract investmentand make our community a morewelcoming place to live and dobusiness,” said Executive Directorof the Long Island City BusinessImprovement District, GayleBaron. “We commend the SLA forlistening to the wishes of the com-munity and rejecting GLCEntertainment’s application for aliquor license. By doing so theyhave ensured the continual eco-nomic growth of Long Island City.”
