Slow Down

(continued on page 7)

As part of our City’s efforts to addresstragedies that have occurred, the citywidespeed limit will be lowered in our localneighborhoods.

On November 3rd, NYC Council Ma-jority Leader Jimmy Van Bramer wasjoined by Queens Department of Trans-portation Commissioner Dalila Hall, JoeConley, Chair of Community Board 2, andelementary school children outside of PS199 to announce the installation of threeNeighborhood Slow Zones in Sunnysidesouth of Queens Boulevard and SunnysideGardens – Woodside.

Van Bramer secured all three neigh-borhood slow zones which are currentlyundergoing implementation and will helpreduce reckless driving and speeding aswell as decrease the amount of vehicularand pedestrian collisions in both residen-tial neighborhoods.

“Here in the 26th District we are usingevery tool at our disposal to protect the livesof seniors, children and families,” said Coun-cil Member Van Bramer. “With the installa-tion of these Neighborhood Slow Zones wewill improve the safety of pedestrians, cy-clists and motorists who use our neighbor-hood streets every single day. Slow zoneshave a proven track record when it comes tolowering the incidents of death and seriousinjuries on our City’s streets. The imple-mentation of these slow zones in Sunnysideand Woodside bring us closer to the daywhen Vision Zero becomes a reality.”

The ultimate goal of the NeighborhoodSlow Zone program is to lower the numberand severity of crashes. Slow zones alsoseek to enhance quality of life for localresidents by reducing cut-through trafficand traffic noise in residential areas. Ac-cording to recent studies, neighborhood

with slow zones show a 14% reduction incrashes with injuries, a 31% reduction invehicle injuries, and a 15% reduction in theodds of pedestrian death.

These Neighborhood Slow Zones wereselected with community input and sur-round six neighborhood schools anddaycare centers, residential streets and sev-eral commercial corridors. The Depart-ment of Transportation evaluated the zonesbased on crash history, community sup-port, proximity of schools, and senior anddaycare centers, among other criteria. Ac-cording to the Administration, the suc-cessful citywide initiative has helped de-crease traffic fatalities to the lowest levelsin recorded history after installations be-gan in 2011. Slow zones are marked byhigh-visibility blue gateway signs at allstreets entering the area, with signs notingthe 20 mph speed limit in the zone, as wellas speed bumps and road stenciling of “20MPH” eight-foot-high letters to make clearthat motorists are in a reduced speed area. The additional blue signage, street mark-ings and gradual speed bumps will encour-age drivers to slowdown and be moreaware of their environment.

“I commend Majority Leader JimmyVan Bramer and the NYC Department ofTransportation for implementing Slow Zonesin Sunnyside. Traffic calming measures inthe Slow Zone designation will contribute toa safer and more walkable neighborhood, which benefits local businesses and resi-dents alike,” said Rachel Thieme, executivedirector of the Sunnyside Shines BusinessImprovement District.

“Thank you to all who helped to makethis slow zone possible, especially to Coun-cilman Van Bramer who has worked with theDepartment of Transportation and the com-munity to install these safety measures,” saidJoe Conley, Chair of Community Board 2.

Oguzhan Turan, said in his accep-tance, “I am not used to being on this sideof an award, as our organization, the Turk-ish Cultural Center Queens, is usuallygiving them.” But it is likely that Mr.Turan will have to get used to recognitionas the need grows for all of us to findgoodness and a place to pin our hopes fora united, peaceful future.
