WORK-BASED LEARNING STUDENT PRACTICE INTERVIEWING SKILLS WITH MOCK INTERVIEWSStudents understanding best practices for a strong job interview is essential at any stage of employability. WHS work-based learning students participated in mock interviews to help them develop their interviewing skills and understand how to promote their career-related skills to an employer and dress for success. The students also practiced their business introduction by finding our principal or one of the assistant principals and sharing a little information about themselves. In WBL, student learn about soft skills and demonstrating what they have learned in the work place. This was a fun activity!

Mrs. Steele wants to thank the following business professionals who volunteered their time to make this event realistic and successful: Ms. MaryJane O’Dell—Northside Hospital—Cherokee; Mr. Keith Booth—Chick-fil-A Outlet Shoppes at Atlanta; Ms. Kim Carbia—Career Coach; Mr. Joe Bono—Menchie’s Towne Lake Square; and Ms. Ashia Walker and Ms. Candy Marshall—Goodwill Career Center, Hwy 92. They provided students with valuable feedback and hopefully the students will incorporate in their future plans so when the time comes for an actual job interview, they are well prepared.

WISE CLUB HAPPENINGSWoodstock High School’s WiSE club hosted their third GNO on December 3, 2015 and the theme was robotics. Throughout the night, the middle school girls participated in three activities. In one, they learned the basics of programming with easyC. They watched how robots performed under the program and were able to alter their programs and download them to a robot. In the second activity, the young ladies participated in a tractor pull and learned about gear ratios and their effects on the performance of robots. They were also given a chance to use joysticks to control robots with different gear ratios. The last activity taught the girls about Maglev transportation as they built miniature paper vehicles with magnets on the bottoms and figured out how to float them down a magnetic track with a high speed and accuracy. The girls had a great time and expressed their excitement for the next GNO on March 3, 2016.

3NAVY JROTCThe last few months have been very successful for our Navy JROTC unit here at Woodstock! Our Academic team has been working very hard lately for the upcoming competitions. All of that hard work paid off when Cadets Evan Setter, Irenee Houngblame, Robert Birke and Anna Fournaris defeated 14 other schools at the Hillgrove High School Brain Brawl on January 9, 2016. On top of our impressive academic team, our unit is very close to reaching our goal of 3000 community service hours. That’s a lot of Saturdays spent helping the community and we are so proud to have such dedicated cadets who would give up their Saturdays to serve. We’re right on track for our end of the year goal.

These past few months our Air Rifle and Orienteering teams have been working around the clock to train and be the best they can be. Since we have such dedicated team members, both our Air Rifle team and our Orienteering team made it to their respective Area 12 Championships this year! The Orienteering Team competed on January 24, 2016 at the Area 12 Championship which included top cadets from all of Georgia and northern Florida. The team had an impressive showing. Special congratulations to Cadet Mattie Cantrall who placed fourth on the Orange Course and Cadet Anna Fournaris who placed 10th on the Yellow Course. Also Cadets Nicolas Lord (Nick) and Pedro Contreras placed 22nd and 23rd respectively out of 79 runners, and Cadet Evan Setter placed 26th out of 97 runners.

Another important event that is coming up fast is AMI or Area Manager Inspection. Area Manager Inspection is an annual event that all NJROTC units participate in, where the Manager for their area comes to inspect every cadet in the unit, inspect the room and equipment, and undergo a unit briefing from the current CO. It’s a very important event that takes place on February 10, 2016 and we are confident in our ability to perform even better this year than last year!

We are sad to say that the last drill meet of this school year is coming up; but we are proud to announce that we wrapped our drill trailer! It now displays Woodstock colors and logos. The Parkview drill meet is a Marine Corps drill meet that includes a freshman only drill card, and armed exhibition card to name a few. It also involves a challenging PT competition in which cadets navigate over obstacles, climb ropes, and perform a fireman’s carry. It’s definitely a challenging competition, but our cadets never back down from a challenge. The Parkview Drill meet will take place on January 30, 2016 and more information on it will be coming out soon.

It’s been such a great year for our Woodstock NJROTC and we couldn’t have done it without such dedicated and hard working cadets that make this program a success. We are especially proud of our Academic, Air Rifle, and Orienteering teams and wish them the best of luck with their future competitions, as well as our drill team as they train to attend the Parkview Drill Meet. Thanks to everyone that makes Woodstock NJROTC what it is!

4INTERVIEW TIPS WORKSHOPThe media center #CareerCafeWHS welcomed Career Coach, Kim Carbia, to speak with students about interview tips. Classes and students on their lunch periods attended her workshop. This interactive session was very helpful for students with some even planning to follow up with Mrs. Carbia regarding how to spruce up their resume. Plans are in the works to have her back for a Time Management Workshop.

SECOND ANNUAL CTAE EXPOThe media center kicked off this semester with the second annual CTAE Expo, which allowed students to ask questions and explore what CTAE elective courses are all about. Students went from station to station engaging in various student led activities. 8th graders from Woodstock Middle attended the expo and 8th graders from Freedom Middle experienced it through virtual conferencing. The expo helps students make a more informed decision when it comes to registration.

7WHS MARCHING WOLVERINE BANDThe Woodstock High School Wolverine Band has been busy the past few months. Just when you thought marching season was over.

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Christmas Parade

This parade took place in downtown Atlanta, and showed the precision that the Marching Wolverines are known for. Without the luxury of a 100-yard wide field to perform on, the band maintained tight ranks and impressed the crowd with their rendition of Good King Wenceslas, arranged by Michael Terry.

Woodstock Christmas Parade

At the conclusion of the CHoA Parade, the band had a little time to unwind at the Outlet Shoppes of Atlanta before forming-up once more and performing in the annual Woodstock Christmas Parade. A great turnout with more familiar faces in the crowd helped to energize the band and show everyone why they’re the outstanding musicians and performers they are. I’m sure there were a few band members that wanted to break out and perform Fallen Angel again. After the Parades, it was time to stow the uniforms and shakos for the season.

By the way, what’s a shako? Glad you asked. Simply put, it’s a funky marching band hat. In reality, it’s a tall, cylindrical military cap with a visor. The word shako originated from the Hungarian name csákó, which was a part of the uniform of the Hungarian hussar of the 18th century. See, you learn things other than music in band.

Christmas Concert

This year’s Christmas Concert proved that the band cleans up nice and sounds just as incredible wearing dresses and tuxedos. It was an outstanding concert. One of the highlights was a “Concert in the Round”, where sections surrounded the audience and performed individual songs. It was a fascinating display of the range and sound of the instruments – as well as the skill of the musicians. The Concert was preceded by the first performance of the Band’s Flute Choir, who serenaded the waiting audience with Christmas Carols and other numbers.

After the Christmas season, there was another performance featuring various ensembles and selected soloists. These kids are talented.

LGPE Workups

Marching season may be over, but know that the Wolverine Band is hard at work in preparations for the upcoming LGPE (Large Group Performance Evaluation). We all know that the Wolverine Band impressed the crowds in the stands, the crowds alongside streets in Atlanta and Woodstock, and their family and friends in various concerts, but this is the “real test”, where they get to impress judges. Best of luck to our Wolverine Band!
