Analogy

• Analogy--An analogy is a comparison in which an idea or a thing is compared to another thing that is quite different from it. It aims at explaining that idea or thing by comparing it to something that is familiar. Metaphors and similes are tools used to draw an analogy. Therefore, analogy is more extensive and elaborate than either a simile or a metaphor. Consider the following example:

• On the back of your worksheet write an introduction for the following assignment:– Your assignment is to analyze several essays by the same

author for rhetorical appeals and techniques. Then research the life, work, and critical reactions of the author. You will need to study the author’s life to evaluate how his or her experiences have influenced his or her writing. You will also need to read a critical review of your author’s work to reference throughout your essay. You will need to incorporate and synthesize your research to support a well-developed, insightful rhetorical analysis essay of the author’s style.
