Who I Am

My Education: I hold a Certificate in College Counseling from UCLA, and I am a graduate of the PACAC Institute for College Counseling. I am a magna cum laude graduate of New York University, where I was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. I am certified as a secondary school teacher by the State of New York. I hold a J.D. from Hofstra University School of Law where I graduated at the top of my class.

My Experience: My career-oriented focus to college and graduate school admissions draws on my experience in the business world, as well as my educational background. As an award-winning editor and writer specializing in higher education and secondary school, I have gained invaluable insight into families, secondary school and higher education. Thanks to my law background, I am an effective advisor to and advocate for my students. My law, writing and editing skills give students an advantage in brainstorming, crafting and polishing essays that sing and in creating powerful, professional resumes that become the foundations for their careers

My Presentations: I have moderated programs with college deans from across the United States in Greenwich, Connecticut (College Ahead!) and in Scarsdale, New York (the annual Inside the Admissions Office program), and I have run college admissions workshops on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. I have also moderated programs for my fellow professionals: Where Credit is Due: How to Decipher the High School Transcript, for IECA (Independent Educational Consultants Association) and Students Living Abroad and College Admission, at the annual conference of the National Association for College Admission Counseling, an organization of more than 11,000 professionals who assist students as they make choices about pursuing postsecondary education.

My programs have featured panelists from American University, Barnard College, Bucknell University, Butler University, Columbia University, Dickinson College, Indiana University, Lafayette College, Muhlenberg College, Northeastern University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, SUNY New Paltz, Syracuse University, the University of Chicago, University of Connecticut, University of Rochester, University of Virginia, and Vanderbilt University. Bringing together the decision-makers in college admissions to talk with students and parents and my colleagues is among my greatest pleasures.

My Media: I have been featured in the cover story, V.I.P., in the January 6, 2008 edition of The New York Times Special Supplement, Education Life; in the September 2010 issue of Westchester Magazine (Getting That Big Fat Envelope); in the Great Schools Parent’s Guide to K-12 Success (Should My Teen Take Four Years of a Foreign Language?); and in Allbusiness.com (Stress, College Admissions and Your Employees). I am a contributor to Get into College (Atlanta, Georgia: Hundreds of Heads Books, 2009) and How to Survive Getting Into College (Atlanta, Georgia: Hundreds of Heads Books, 2006), and I share tips on the college process in the Counselor’s Corner of the Get into College online newsletter: the college search, surfing college websites, visiting colleges, colleges visiting you, organizing applications, summer activities, fi nancial aid, meeting deadlines, and creating a senior year checklist. I have written about college for the RJ Insider’s Guide to College Life and for the newsletter of CACLD, the Connecticut Association for Children and Adults with Learning Disabilities. I was the College Insider columnist in Westchester County, N.Y. You can read a number of those columns in the Articles section of my website.

My Affiliations: I am a member of the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), the Higher Education Consultants Association (HECA), the Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA), the New York State Association for College Admission Counseling (NYSACAC) and the Westchester/Putnam/Rockland Counseling Association (WPRCA).

“Betsy has excellent rapport with students, parents and college administrators. Her essay-editing skills and ability to match kids and colleges are first-rate.” Associate Provost and Executive Vice Dean, Ivy League medical school

“Thank you SO MUCH for helping me get into my dream schools!...My family and I truly appreciate all you’ve done for me.” High school senior, Dartmouth College Class of 2012

By senior year, [Betsy] is contacting [students] weekly to remind them about deadlines, to brainstorm ideas for college essays and to review their applications. She prepare[s] them for their interviews by staging mock sessions.” New York Times, Education Life, January 6, 2008

“My daughter got into the car one day after working with you, and said, ‘I would have finished my personal essay sooner if I hadn’t worked with Betsy, but it would have been crap’...Thank you so much for all of the great help you gave her, because I don’t think she could have done it without you.” Parent of high school senior, M.I.T. [Early Action] Class of 2013

“Many thanks again for all your help - am impressed and appreciative of your significant effort to, as you say, Stand Out. Will be in touch re my next child in due course.”Parent of high school senior, Swarthmore College [Early Decision] Class of 2013 “Many thanks again. If you ever need us to vouch for you, please use us!!! We are very happy clients.”Parent of high school seniors, Brandeis University [Early Decision] Class of 2013 and School of Visual Arts

Class of 2013

“...with much gratitude, Betsy, for your guidance and hard work in aiding our daughter through the ‘college adventure’ of choosing, applying, interviewing... You did so well by her. She told me the other day that for the first time in her life, she feels smart. We never would have found St. Joe’s without you. She just loves it.” Parent of college freshman [awarded athletic scholarship], St. Joseph’s University Class of 2013

What They Say...

“I want to thank you and again say that you have been amazing and that again, thanks to you she is in! The thing I really like about how you work is that you did not allow her to settle for second best in her essays.”Parent of high school senior, Syracuse University [Early Decision] Class of 2014

“You made the process so much easier and less angst-ridden. If only I had been so smart with my first and second children!! I now wonder why I didn’t hire a college counselor for my other kids. The process was so difficult; not the work per se, but the interactions. So much nagging and arguing... My daughter too enjoyed working with you. You were, as always, helpful and willing to take the time to talk through her decision-making process.“ Parent of high school senior, Hobart & William Smith Colleges Class of 2012

“After you finished working with my son on his personal essay, he showed it to his English teacher. She’s the toughest teacher in the school, and she loved it. She said she could tell that it was his voice.”Parent of high school senior, Bentley University Class of 2013

“College is going great. I absolutely love Binghamton University and definitely made the right decision. I’d like to thank you again for helping me achieve my goals and getting to where I am right now. “Freshman, Binghamton University Class of 2012

“We couldn’t have done it without you, and I can’t thank you enough. We’ll see you with the next one!”Parent of high school senior, Wesleyan University [Early Decision] Class of 2014

“I got into Penn! Thank you for everything!”High school senior, University of Pennsylvania [Early Decision] Class of 2012

“Anyway I just wanted to thank you so much for all of your help. Without your help I do not know how far I would have gotten in the college process. Throughout the whole year you have been so helpful with everything from my essays to my resume to all the deadlines. I just wanted to personally extend my gratitude to you and I will be sure to keep you posted on how my college experience is going. Thanks again.” High school senior, Indiana University Class of 2014
